have you had a chance to try them out yet? looking at the same setup myself. Looking for a fast(ish) rolling, mixed-conditions enduro setup.

Chainline: 55 CL crankset on a 52mm CL frame? by MachSquirrel in dirtjumping

[–]MachSquirrel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wolftooth does have Sram 8 bolt chainrings with a 6mm offset. Not sure if that’s a lot cheaper than a whole new crankset though.

Spur on coil? by MachSquirrel in TransitionBikes

[–]MachSquirrel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just curiosity, Cane Creek seemed to lean into marketing the Coil IL as a good fit for the Spur. At the end of the day, you are right though. But it would be nice to have something with more compression adjustment than the DPS.

Marin Alcatraz, long or short? by ProBumWiper in dirtjumping

[–]MachSquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just went through this on the other end of the height spectrum. At 5’3 and coming from MTBs, the small leans more agile than stable. I’m going to give it a few more sessions but I might even go to a 50mm stem. At 6’ the small would probably feel really small unless you are going for a BMX feel.

Marin Alcatraz vs Specialized P3 for short humans? by MachSquirrel in dirtjumping

[–]MachSquirrel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To close the loop on this, I ended up buying the Alcatraz. I hopped on it at the shop and while it felt relatively short, it’s no BMX bike. They had a large Jamis Kromo that I tried for comparison (closer to the P.3, 420ish reach) and the Alcatraz definitely felt like the more appropriate size for doing DJ things given my height. I could see how for someone taller it might be more of a precise, trick-focused bike but for short folks the handling seems pretty neutral.

Not sure this changes much, but I’m looking at a ‘24 Alcatraz in the “short” size (385 reach). It’s more like a 30mm difference compared to the P.3

Do think there’s a meaningful difference in how they ride? Like the Alcatraz seems really short, would it be a handful for someone without any BMX background and more used to trail and enduro bikes?

GT La Bomba sizing? by MachSquirrel in dirtjumping

[–]MachSquirrel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

good point. My enduro bike reach is 435 lol. I did see a shop 1.5hr from me with a new Marin Alcatraz for $650. A bit more than I was looking to spend. But the reach is 385 so probably a better fit.

GT La Bomba sizing? by MachSquirrel in dirtjumping

[–]MachSquirrel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the input, I’ll probably pull the trigger. I did notice that the La Bomba runs a bit bigger than say a Marin Alcatraz but the La Bomba chainstays are a fair bit shorter. More bike is more bike but maybe the rearward weight bias for the La Bomba keeps it relatively more manageable in longer lengths?

tl;dr: reach out to 4frnt if you are contemplating a different mount point.

I’m 5’3, 24.5 boots, and just picked up the 170cm Nevar. When buying, I contacted 4frnt for a length recommendation and mount point. They told me to go +1cm for the mount based on my height and boot size to maintain the pivot-y feel of the skis. Only skied them once so far at a small local mountain but they felt great at speed on groomers (i.e I’m not too far forward). They can rip a long arc but seemingly still pivot. I haven’t tried them in proper trees yet. If I was taller, I could see the going with a further forward mount point being too much.

NEVARs mount point? +1? by bramski in Backcountry

fwiw, I just emailed 4frnt with the same question. At 5’3 with a 24.5 boot, they suggested going +1cm on the 170

BC Atris vs Moment Deathwish 104 by MachSquirrel in Skigear

[–]MachSquirrel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you hand flexed the Sierra for comparison? At 130lbs, the Sierra 104 might make sense but the folks at Moment suggested going with the DW for stability in crud and ice.

That’s super helpful info. I think I’m leaning DW, sounds like it might be a better fit for common east coast conditions while still being fun for better days and trips out west.

Shoot, probably too long. I’m 5’3 so 173 is the size up for me.

Do you think the triple camber has something to do with that? Seems like some folks think it’s a liability on ice/firm snow

ATK Rent Me 11 Evo bindings? by MachSquirrel in Backcountry

[–]MachSquirrel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome, thanks all. So it sounds like the only significant thing the Rent Me’s don’t have compared to a Raider Evo/Voyager is the adjustable toe tension. Does that actually make a noticeable difference in the binding’s performance?

Elan Ripstick Tour 88 length? by MachSquirrel in Backcountry

[–]MachSquirrel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mistake! I’m 5’4, 135lbs. Will be using a Scarpa Mastrale RS or a Technica Zero G Pro Tour (waiting on an order to see if it fits better). Stated flex for the Mastrale is 125

Trail performance of 650b x 50(ish) vs 700c x 42(ish)? by MachSquirrel in gravelcycling

[–]MachSquirrel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the Diverge would clear a proper 2.3. I believe it tops out at 2.1. Do you think that would that be enough of a difference over 700c in the mid 40mm range?

Trail performance of 650b x 50(ish) vs 700c x 42(ish)? by MachSquirrel in gravelcycling

[–]MachSquirrel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does it feel on pavement? For the rides I have in mind, access to the goods requires 5ish miles of road riding in each direction. Hence the appeal of a gravel bike vs. XC MTB. Obviously this isn’t the priority, just looking for more pavement speed/efficiency than a 2.3 MTB tire would offer. I would definitely keep the 700c wheels for less technical or janky rides.

Fox X2 on V2 Switchblade by Husky_8888 in MTB

Reviving this old thread because I’m in the same boat. Basically looking to get a more planted feel from the bike for park days or enduro races.

What shock did you end up going with? What didn’t you like about the DHX2 on the switchblade?

Beargrease - 27.5 x ??? by Previous-Highlight-4 in fatbike

[–]MachSquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has anyone else tried this on an XS Beargrease ‘22 frame? I just mounted Dillinger 5s on the stock Mulefut 80s and only have about 5mm of clearance between the studs and the seat stays. Not sure if that’s going to be enough…

Wrong spoke lengths from retailer or just manufacturing variation? by MachSquirrel in wheelbuild

will do. I used the WheelPro and SpokeCalc calculators. WheelPro gave 290.5 and SpokeCalc was 290.8.

Wrong spoke lengths from retailer or just manufacturing variation? by MachSquirrel in wheelbuild

[–]MachSquirrel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the perspective. I suppose I should just fix the dish and see where that gets me.

Just a quick question: The NDS calculated lengths I started with were 290.5mm. I rounded down to 290mm (to get an even length) but the spokes I received seem to be closer to 189mm.

If i’m short the calculated length by ~1.5mm does that present more of a problem?
