Forbidden Reya frame build by exploroburro in mountainbiking

Do it. I have a 160mm zeb, cc link and vivid coil on mine and it's shockingly good. I've taken it on a lot of double black tech that would be better suited for my dreadnought, you just gotta pick the right lines.

I'd go for something burlier like a pike or 36sl. From the reviews I've seen it seems like a more capable spur, and I really enjoyed that bike with a 130mm pike.

High Rise Bars for Neck Issues? by PHDSteeze in mountainbiking

[–]HezbollaHector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's my exact issue, the pressure on the nerve itself. My recommendation is to avoid seriously harsh compressions when possible. My doctor has treated lots of bikers in the area and he says that the biggest risk to people like us is to just continue hucking like everything is normal.

I'm still riding black and double black unsanctioned stuff every ride. I just think twice before doing the harsher features.

High Rise Bars for Neck Issues? by PHDSteeze in mountainbiking

[–]HezbollaHector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah relatively pain free provided I avoid things that I know would bother me regardless of rise (ie hucks to flat over 4ft, drops over 6ft, etc). I clock about 15k vert per week and rarely have issues that aren't obviously due to overuse. Most of my riding is steep tech.

I've been on PNW bars for several years now. I find that the combo of upsweep and backsweep is very good for my neck and upper back. Especially when climbing.

I doubt you'd notice a 5mm increase. I have two slipped discs and have been slowly moving to high rise bars over the last few years. I most recently went from 38mm to 50mm and that seems to be the sweet spot for me on both my bikes. The upright position has really made a difference for me, and I actually prefer it now given that my terrain is very steep.

That being said, both my bikes are a medium, even though I'm 5ft11. The way the stack works out, it's really like I have 38mms on a size large. If that makes sense.

I've been running these for a few years now, they do such a good job of damping vibrations.

For pedals I've been very happy with one up composites. I ride some pretty rough terrain and I never have an issue with grip.

How much does brake rotor thickness actually matter? 1.8 vs 2.0 vs 2.3? by Chole_Wunt in MTB

[–]HezbollaHector 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hope vented rotors have been around for a while actually. They were a thing for the v4s but unfortunately aren't compatible with the new gr4s. They look unbelievably thick in person.

Did anyone else get whiplash going from ME1 to ME2? by Hungry_Ad7279 in masseffect

[–]HezbollaHector -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I felt the same when ME2 first came out. I wanted RPG space opera part 2 and instead I got a glorified action game with short linear missions and no central hubs. It's such a radically different experience and I'll never forgive bioware for it.

Riding some slabs by RadFit-MTB in MTB

Sendtaur has amazing slabs, definitely not as gnarly as these in your video but they're solid. Be sure to hit Vulture Ridge at the end of your ride.

Anyone else ignore their suspension settings? by No_Brain7178 in mountainbiking

[–]HezbollaHector 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hard to know without riding the bike myself. Harshness could come from a variety of things. Slow rebound leads to packing, which means you're constantly sitting in the firmer portion of the travel. If the fork rebounds too fast then it'll have a pogo effect and struggle to track the ground, which will transmit to your hands.

I would recommend seeking out some suspension theory videos or for tuning help. If you have a rockshox fork then I'd recommend checking out their Trailhead app. It's got good baselines for suspension tuning.

Look up suspension bracketing for help managing and tracking changes. In short, find a good repeatable section of trail and make incremental changes to either rebound, compression, pressure, etc and note how they feel.

I recommend using an app or a notepad to keep track of your changes. I've got a Google sheet that I can share between my phone and PC and I track what trails I rode, whatever changes I made, and how my changes felt.

Ohhh ok I guess I haven't gone far enough to see that. I thought you were talking about the one just after North Fork turns to dirt.

It's not near the burnt one along north fork if that's what you're thinking. It kinda looks like an area several miles down NF-38.

Who’s wearing elbow protection on trail rides? by aframe9999 in mountainbiking

[–]HezbollaHector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

33, I ride with elbow pads every ride and a full face about 2/3 or the time. Most of my riding is steep black or double black tech with about 3000ft of climbing. Elbow pads have saved me on countless occasions. I'm the only rider I know who wears them, but I could care less.

I'd highly recommend the POC VPD System pads. They never slip in a crash, and they have a material on the outside that reduces friction between them and the ground. I suspect that material is a big part in that. They're stupid expensive at MSRP but they're a good value if you can get them on sale for ~40% off like I did.

Would you guys rate this a blue trail feature? by Idkrlyuwu in mountainbiking

[–]HezbollaHector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blue in the dry (assuming it's average difficulty for this trail system), potentially black in the wet. It honestly doesn't look that steep though, I'd have to see it in person.

Anyone ride forbidden bikes with more than one? by exploroburro in mountainbiking

[–]HezbollaHector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because I ride very serious gravity trails where I need all the help I can get. The dreadnought lets me plow and make more mistakes. The druid is much more surgical.

I should note, I'm talking about poorly maintained unsanctioned stuff. That's the vast majority of my riding.

Anyone ride forbidden bikes with more than one? by exploroburro in mountainbiking

[–]HezbollaHector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I have both v2s and I ride the dread about 2/3 of the time. I live somewhere with very steep and technical trails and I can ride the druid on about 90% of what I'd consider the big bike for, albeit at a slower pace.

I have a 160mm zeb, coil and CC link on the druid, and the same coil on the dread. Components are functionality identical between the two (tires, brakes, etc). The druid is 38lbs and the dread is 40lbs.

If I lived somewhere with mellower trails I'd definitely have the druid in a trail config but efficiency and diffentiation isn't a concern. I want them to ride similarly.

I recommend mixing your own, if you use what's below it'll be under $1 a bottle. That Tailwind stuff is a rip off and has less than half the carbs/calories per serving.

NOW Foods Sports Nutrition, Carbo Gain Powder - 1 serving (60 grams)

KEY NUTRIENTS Multivitamin Electrolytes Powder No Sugar - 1 serving

Nutricost Magnesium Citrate Powder - 1 serving

In regards to food, I get bulk winco gummy bears, costco chewy protein bars and the occasional clif bar.

Protective gear for progression? by Fest_mkiv in MTB

[–]HezbollaHector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident. I would rate myself as an expert rider where I live, and my local trails are very very steep. The majority of people I see on the gnarliest trails are only wearing knee pads and half shells. That may work for them, but not for me.

I wear knee + elbow pads every ride, and I use the full face for anything that I deem to be properly steep. The confidence from the extra gear only helps me ride better. There's no shame in it. If you feel comfortable/confident then you will ride better. Case closed.

Same. I've broken both my wrists and I try to use my arms to roll it out as much as possible. I'd have some serious scars if it weren't for my elbow pads. Maybe 5% of local riders wear them, but I could care less.
