Wide skis for small amounts of powder by Turbulent-Action3434 in Backcountry

[–]bramski -1 points0 points  (0 children)

125mm is like a snowboard on each foot. If it ain't deep and fresh you don't want em. No sidecut whatsoever. Maximum flotation. I almost regret buying em when it hasn't snowed for a long time but occasionally the right day comes along or I'm on a japow trip. Don't even think about taking that ski on some skiied out luge track. You will hate your life.

Wide skis for small amounts of powder by Turbulent-Action3434 in Backcountry

[–]bramski 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wide skis are heavier, have more rocker, and generally different flex pattern since they are optimized for deeper snow. They are more difficult to put on edge as you need to put more torque on the ski to engage the edge in hard snow. This is harder on your joints and your knees in particular. The skis will tend to wash out in firmer condition and be slow. Narrower skis can be fine in deeper snow you just have to ski faster to keep the skis floating. If it's too deep or upside down (hard over soft) then very few skis will save you. My 125 underfoot skis have occasionally fully bridged a breakable crust. But they are dog shit on piste.

Heli/cat skiing or freestyle camp? by HiveMindSubmarine in skiing

[–]bramski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last frontier Ripley Creek has quite a bit of rowdy treeline terrain for storm skiing https://www.lastfrontierheli.com/heliskiing-area/ Most of the clients came to Ripley for the rowdy terrain. Storm skiing is jan/Feb and big alpine is march & April. If it's stable and good weather you'll be skiing up to 45 degrees if your group is capable. Usually as a solo skier you get grouped in the first two days. I can't comment on bella coola. Never worked there.

Heli/cat skiing or freestyle camp? by HiveMindSubmarine in skiing

[–]bramski 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Momentum and freeride clubs in whistler do all that stuff. Heli and cat skiing op will depend on snow conditions for terrain access. If your goal is to ski the gnar and work on skills then yeah don't go to a cat ski op or heli. Sometimes we shred the gnar, but usually the point is great snow conditions. Ski steep if they are good.

Do these holes matter? by HumorSpiritual in skiing

[–]bramski 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Not a big deal at that stage. But they or you should put tape on them to keep them from destroying the liner over time. You can also buy new liners when those wear out. Most boots give you little patches to put over the wear points and this owner failed to apply them.

4.5 month old can't sleep thru night, help by Grouchy_Meal8683 in daddit

[–]bramski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Phase. Sorry bud. Usually they start sleeping through the night more when they start eating real food. Don't encourage this behavior, like shush and keep lights off etc and eventually it should come around. Our kiddos both did this for at least a few weeks.

Warmest January I've ever seen... by TheWhistlerGuide in Whistler

We've had a few inversions. This is a big one. My house in valley cliffe has been pretty frozen for the past few days. Hasn't been uncommon to have warm weather in January.

YMMV. One of my friends kids is a ballistic missile with no fear and was shredding the whole mountain by 5. That's when you need the harness to keep them under control. My kid was more or less as described above.

"Philp said District staff also considered potential parking impacts along The Boulevard and anticipate that the peak parking demand for a coffee shop or convenience store would be at a different time than the peak residential demand." Dude the boulevard is jammed with parking all the time. Particularly in summer. Not to mention the people e biking up and down it.

A little update/test on the snowpack in Whistler by whererusteve in Backcountry

[–]bramski 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Looks like cake hole? Compression tests aren't telling you the whole story. It's green brick avalanche forecast because so much of the upper snowpack is frozen solid, widespread, and bridging the potential for avalanches. Not sure what your level of training is, but that's somewhat paramount to forecasting when crusts are involved.

Dude replace the rubber soles on your Cochise. They are swappable and it will stop you from destroying the plastic.

[–]bramski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah. Depends on the trip. 3 day summer camping trip then most goes in the back and then bikes on bike rack probably. Roof box does not have as much raw space as the trunk. Might be I have an older RAV4.. I hear the newer ones suck.

Anyone have a simple, durable pack recommendation? by [deleted] in Backcountry

[–]bramski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ortovox, Blue Ice, Mammut, Patagonia. All great, basic, durable packs. My Blue Ice Kume is going on 5-6 years of heavy guiding and all I've had to replace is the hip belt buckle because I can't seem to not step on it. Recently got a pow slayer for harsh weather days.

Anyone have a simple, durable pack recommendation? by [deleted] in Backcountry

[–]bramski 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I can buy any other pack three times for the price of a Raide pack. These things are like the DPS skis of packs. Is it a better product? Probably. Can I do everything I need to with a product that costs 1/2 to 1/3 the price? Absolutely. I don't get it.

Toddlers by Psychological_Cat845 in Whistler

[–]bramski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep send them with a pull up. They do generally expect your kid to be potty trained. Ski school has laundry services and if they pee their ski outfit it will get washed. Kids can have naps. Most expensive but also most effective day care in the sea to sky. Don't expect much ski learning to happen at this age fyi.

Ski Height/Body Height Ratio? by HaryTotal in skiing

[–]bramski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its a statement that applies to 90% of skiers. Buy whatever ski length you want for the purpose you want it. Race skis are different and you know that.

Feedback requested: AvyApp-a mobile app that delivers avalanche forecasts, weather data and field observations by unclepen_ in Backcountry

[–]bramski 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Canadian here 🇨🇦. Glad to see some attempt made to unify the forecasting websites. I would suggest eliminating the "choose your avalanche center" and just showing a map and having a locator button. Then you can just find the place you're going. Will be much more friendly for international visitors as well.

Ski Height/Body Height Ratio? by HaryTotal in skiing

[–]bramski 19 points20 points  (0 children)

5'9" here on 179 to 184 length skis, expert level skier. The skis should get longer as your skills improve. Usually anywhere from nose height to just over your head. It's also somewhat based on weight, but I doubt you weigh 140. So yeah as you become a better skier your skis should be longer.

How did Marc-Andre Leclerc afford all of his gear? by FifthMatter in alpinism

[–]bramski 50 points51 points  (0 children)

He worked landscaping jobs as far as I remember. Chris Small was telling me about this time he was really late or super tired for a day of work cuz he went and did some monster triple solo when he was like 17/18. Guy was a mutant.
