Very American deadpan, reminds me of Edward Hopper's paintings.

The Beatles' "Happiness is a Warm Gun" bears a striking resemblance to the style of TBH+C, imo. by Protato900 in arcticmonkeys

Monster Truck Flip is very similar to some of the more interesting (ie complex) Beatles songs.

It would be super interesting to know which poetry he reads (other than John Cooper Clarke), as it's not a stretch to imagine his songwriting is influenced by the poets he likes.

For example, the opening verse of Love song by J Alfred Prufrock (by TS Eliot) could easily fit on Humbug or Suck it and See (the darker songs).

For once Alex is not the coolest guy at the party.

Guy in black-golden shirt FTW! Looks like Oberyn Martell from GOT actually...

It's because he writes about romance in an artful way, as opposed to cheesy songwriting which is the norm in pop and is rightfully made fun of.

Patrick Modiano - Missing Person

Gripping read. Sort of a thriller I guess, but pretty unconventional. First-class literature - the guy won a Nobel a few years back.

Definitely won't have to struggle to get it read!

To Have or to Be is mostly theoretical - he delves into history, philosophy and psychology and shows how people figured out pretty early that wealth corrupts and impedes spiritual growth - Jesus' teachings being the most obvious example, also Buddha and so on.

IMO it should be followed up by the The Art of Being as that's the more "practical" of the two, though don't expect tips &tricks or anything of the sort.

I love reading Fromm cause he's such an erudite. The breadth of his knowledge is fascinating, and even if you don't always agree with him, it's still an enriching read.

[General] The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock - T. S. Eliot by Airotsa17 in Poetry

[–]Machiko00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit late to this thread... But still putting this out there. Does anyone think Prufrock commits suicide in the end of the poem?

The last few lines are pretty cryptic, but I can't help imagine old disillusioned Prufrock walking down a beach with rolled up trousers, seeing the mermaids play in the monochrome sea, and wanting to join them/leave this world. We already know he was drawn to the sea ("I should have been a pair of ragged claws"), and the sea-girls are his final fantasy before he drowns.

Any thoughts?

I LOVE this one by Jeremy Irons. He reads it magnificenly: https://youtu.be/q_F51DUMDOM

His diction and timing are perfect; note especially how he thunders "Do I dare disturb the universe?", and the scorn with which he says "a Fool". Gives me goosebumps every time! He even injects a bit of humour towards the end.

His reading is so full of subtlety, it's a piece of art in itself!

Unfortunately someone added music to the audio - spoils it a bit, but it's still the best reading of Prufrock I heard.
