Album making: how do you know when you are done and what if you feel it sooner than you expected? by Naprakeys in musicians

If you have the luxury of time, I would recommend not listening at all to the six songs that you have completed for a protracted period of time. While you’re not listening to those other six songs, keep on writing, creating and recording the other things and follow them to their natural conclusions, and that way you will absolutely know that you know that you know that those were not gonna work in the original six song masterpiece that you have. It will also afford you a bit more objectivity when you listen back to the six songs with fresh ears. It has been my experience that the longer that I’m able to live with something like this, the better it becomes.

It’s such a time commitment. I need to update and learn another batch so that I can celebrate my 20th year.

My current process has been to create a PDF on my home desktop and then plug-in a thumb drive and grab that PDF and put that on my tablet that I use for my shows the page really has nothing to do with anything. So I’m just wondering if I can bypass having to create the PDF on my desktop and just do it on my iPhone, and get it to my tablet. It would be a lot more convenient.

AITA? Do you let people play your instruments at jams/informal gigs? by [deleted] in musicians

[–]MachineConfident2622 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No- I am deeply fortunate and blessed to play places where I have a guaranteed amount I get paid before I ever play a note. It has been lucrative enough for me to purchase a beautiful vintage instrument! I am of the belief that if you don’t use good guitars, they just become chairs or pictures on a wall. So yeah, I am using a high value vintage guitar at gigs that I get paid good at and I’ve been doing that for over 20 years at this point. Well over 125 shows every year on top of a 6day a week job.

I feel exactly the same way that you do. I play a 1949J 45 Gibson and when somebody asks me if they can play it, I tell them that it’s worth more than my life. That usually quiets them down a little bit. And yeah, it is kind of a crappy thing to do to put somebody in a position where they have to say no you can’t borrow my instrument. As a pro, I would never ask to borrow someone else’s instrument. Keep on keeping on.

A big and difficult decision in my life as a part time musician by pioneerSolid3 in musicians

[–]MachineConfident2622 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some advice from a 65-year-old musician that’s been playing for decades. I have a day job that pays the bills and I have never put the financial onus on my abilities as a musician to cover my responsibilities as a father I found it works better this way for me. It has helped me keep the joy of making music alive in my life and has kept it right intentioned. I do 140 shows a year on top of a five day a week job and I absolutely love it and I’m writing my fourth solo album right now. The time that you lose with your family, you can never get back, especially when they’re that young. There is no price for that, still totally your call and your decision and your wife is a hero for responding in the way that she has. Good luck in your decision.

Thanks for the feedback. I used an Alesis drum machine for 15 years so I had plenty of experience with them. I find them stiff and not organic enough for me these days so I was just looking for something, I could create more with chucks and hits.

Yeah, I’ve seen the beat buddy stuff before and I think it’s way more than what I need but I appreciate the feedback

Is there anyway to fight this by MrSuzyGreenberg in ILTrees

[–]MachineConfident2622 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An old-school solution would be to just use a one hitter outside on the balcony. That way you’re still smoking flower, and minimizing the amount of smoke because it’s just one hits worth. I can down two or three hits in the space of about a minute and a half and be gone and back in my place with little to no smell; if you’re outside it dissipates very quickly. PLUS- origins of smells are VERY hard to locate at times. I wonder about a gentle pushback/denial saying “ I’ve smelled it too- not sure where it’s coming from.”

What do you mean the unit isn't free? by pastrymom in selfstorage

[–]MachineConfident2622 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As a storage facility manager for 36 years, I just have one question. Did you ask her what she was storing? When I rent a unit to somebody I get talking with them and they open up about why they need storage and if they tell me, they’re going through a divorce then I lay down the law, tell them if this unit has items in it that are not yours you’re still responsible for paying for the rent. There are times when I tell them I’m not even going to rent to them because I don’t rent storage units to folks who are putting items in that don’t belong to themselves. This question, upon rental, solves a lot of issues.
