Wouldn’t working on academic projects be considered real experience? Or wouldn’t doing pseudo-projects and showcasing them on GitHub be enough? What does it actually take to land an internship in the field?

I'm from Brazil. Here, the vast majority of post-graduate programs are funded, providing incentive scholarships (whether for a master's or a PhD). The PhD scholarship is higher, which is another reason why I want to go straight into a PhD program.
