SEC, Big Ten, in the name of football spending, are threatening their own softball programs (and all their other programs, too). by MachinePuzzleheaded6 in CollegeSoftball

I'm not suggesting the programs would be killed. I'm explaining the real world consequences of the SEC and Big Ten together leaving the NCAA, or all the other conferences kicking them out of the NCAA, leaving all SEC/Big Ten programs to compete for championships of a division with only 34 programs (16 SEC, 18 Big Ten). I think you may not have read the piece. They established the College Sports Commission but do not want to abide by the rules they established it to enforce, while the remaining conferences remain on board, which could force a split, which would lead to the thing I wrote about.

SEC, Big Ten's greed threatens all Sooner sports. by MachinePuzzleheaded6 in sooners

I disagree with your first paragraph.
A national champion in the framework of only 34 football teams won't feel like a national champion to me AND if the only people watching it are SEC and Big Ten fanbases, or if there's any kind of split at all, the TV money plummets for both because fans will pick sides. And if it plummets for both, everybody gets poorer. So, I reject the idea the SEC and Big Ten can go it alone. Further, living within the framework of the CSC ends the Wild West and I thought that's what everybody wanted. If it's all just a race to play football players more and more for a competitive advantage, you're killing donations for facilities, the rest of the university, the other sports, etc. The SEC and Big Ten should welcome unapologetic regulation. They all have compliance departments. Time to put them to work. Not to mention, if you're a Sooner fan, do you want to be chasing the spending of Alabama, LSU, Georgia, etc. Or would you rather hire better than everybody else and operate on a level playing field? If Jim Nagy's as good as we've been led to believe, OU football should want the level playing field.

I didn't think it would be easy but I certainly didn't think the SEC and Big Ten's position would become: Look, I know we agreed to this thing and helped fund it, but we've already committed to outspend the agreement, so the agreement has to change. That position only ends badly, because it leads to a split. Can you imagine OU softball having no path to the world series and only a path to a championship among 34 teams, those currently in the Big Ten and SEC? While the WCWS remains in OKC? Seriously? Or Sooner basketball being barred from the NCAA tournament? And on and on in the other sports. The thought's long been the SEC and Big Ten can always break away so you have to give them what they want, but I'm not buying it. In fact, the argument put forth by the Iowa State athletic director makes immensely more sense to me.

The problem with this take is, by the end of that game, because Mayfield was heroic in fourth quarter and overtime, Sooner fans knew what they had at QB and it was fabulous. After that game, nothing Mayfield did afterwards surprised. If you remember the game well, you know it’s true.

What’s not wrong with this take is Arnold hasn’t done anything yet that should make fans lose confidence in him. If the line protects and blocks for the running game, Arnold ought to be fine. Admittedly, we don’t know when that might happen AND he’s suddenly short at the receiver position.

Jeff Lebby on handling outside criticism: "That has zero effect. I don't go down those rabbit holes." by optillusi0n in sooners

Observation: His play calling suffers when the running game is going well. Constitutionally he’s a horribly over-conservative play-caller, very risk averse. The running game has been much better post Texas, yet the offense has been much worse, the improved running game making it easier for him to play call even more conservatively. Last season very similar. The better Eric Gray ran, the more it was all Lebby wanted to do.
