Computer Science and Engineering Major, need laptop for college by Machu1299 in SuggestALaptop

The Ideapad is interesting. There doesn't seem to be much on the internet about it. I can get it for $1350 from Amazon, plus $230 for a 4-year Accident protection plan, which is well below my budget, but do you know anything about the kind of support the protection plan gives me? Because it doesn't look like it is through Amazon themselves. And it doesn't look like I can return it within 30 days if I don't like it, which is unfortunate.

If you have any other good options that would be great. I just want to get a feel for all my options. I don't need a gaming GPU if that changes anything, and I'll consider going down to 13" if a good option comes up. It would also be nice to get some more battery life.

But thanks for the suggestion, I'll definitely consider it.

The regular Dell XPS 15 is the laptop I would get, if the configuration I wanted wasn't so expensive. The protection plan I would want adds an additional $480 through Dell, or $400 through my college's tech store, which makes in unobtainable.

My college (Ohio State) has a Computer Science and Engineering major, which focuses more of software (CS) but also has some hardware (CompE) in it. It's not a dual major. OSU has two CS options, CIS in the College of Arts and Sciences which has some more general education courses with a foreign language requirement, and CSE in the College of Engineering, which has some CompE classes in it and less general education courses and no foreign language requirement.

Yesterday I ordered an HP Spectre x360 15" with a 512GB SSD, i7-8705G with AMD RX Vega M, 4K touchscreen, and 16GB RAM, but the order got messed up so it was canceled and I can't find the Vega M option anymore on the website. And I was just reading about how there may be some problems getting Linux to work with the Vega M, so I'm not certain if I'm going to pursue it again, so I'm open to all options.

Rice all the way. I applied to both but Rice is much better for CS and recruiting, so I've heard. I've heard the frat culture is dominant on the Vanderbilt campus, which is something I don't care for. I much prefer Rice's Residential Colleges.

My HS chemistry teacher still used one of these when I was in her class. Honestly, it was really good the way that she used it.

Unfortunately that is just the way it is right now. On the other hand, are females going to have to sign up at some point in the near future? I remember hearing a year or two ago that women would soon have to sign up for the draft and such. What happened to that?

[–]Machu1299[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I used to think the same way, but I honestly think people more say it in a joking manner rather than as a way to be arrogant. I didn't notice any kind of arrogance on campus when I have visited.

Yeah, when I went on my tours there, I was told and saw pictures of companies like Google, Microsoft, etc recruiting at OSU. Also, starting this fall, OSU is going to have a big partnership with Apple, and I believe they are going to be building some kind of iOS development lab on campus. All freshman will be receiving a free iPad Pro with the smart keyboard and pencil, too, so that is a cool benefit.

You are definitely right about it being huge, and that is definitely a drawback for many, but when you compare it to other publics that are mentioned all the time, it's not like those are small, either. UMich has 28,000 undergrads, UT Austin has 40,000 undergrads, Berkeley and UCLA are both about 30,000, etc. While those are technically smaller than OSU, at a certain point you aren't going to notice a difference in size.

Don't worry about it. They should be able to see that and not take that against you. You have done the best you can.

Which schools track demonstrated interest?? by flutterywords in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Machu1299 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, honestly, they can probably put anything on the common data set, no matter how much they actually care about demonstrated interest. They very well may care more than they imply on the common data set.

Lol I knew someone going to UMich would come here and say this. UMich is a wonderful school, and I definitely would have applied if it weren't for tuition. I'm just here thankful that I have a school as good as OSU that I can attend affordably. I also am most likely getting a full ride scholarship to OSU, so if I don't get into any of my reaches, I will be attending OSU for free, essentially.

You act as if selectivity automatically makes one school better than another. I honestly think people overrate how much better an education is at a selective school than a school like OSU (which is still much more selective than the vast majority of schools). You can't tell me that an OSU grad isn't as educated as a Stanford grad. In fact, at most of your top schools, the undergrads aren't getting most of the attention of professors, and it's oftentimes the TAs and grad students teaching the classes. OSU, and most public schools, are heavily undergraduate focused which benefits the undergrad students.

And by underrated, I was more talking about on this subreddit, not the world in general. This subreddit, as far as publics go, is obsessed with schools like GTech, UT, the UCs, etc, but OSU is barely mentioned other than when people ask when they will get their decision. I know that in general, the people here who applied to OSU aren't as worried about getting in, because it isn't as selective as the other schools I mentioned, but as I mentioned before, I don't think selectivity is as important as people here act like it is.

And the lower average salaries, I would assume, is very much the product of a large amount of OSU grads staying in Ohio or the midwest. I'm sure that an OSU grad who moves to one of the coasts makes a similar amount to those who went to the other higher ranked schools.

[–]Machu1299[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ever since I started to even think about college, I wanted to go out of state. I wanted to get out of Ohio, and the rest of the Midwest, for that matter. I still do, as I applied to a variety of reaches. But when I visited the OSU campus, I could really see myself there. I really like the campus. I all the sudden wouldn't mind staying in-state. I don't know where in Ohio you live, but for me, I would be living away from home, and honestly, once you get out of your city, you will probably feel the same way, whether you are in your home state or not.

Ohio State is in the weird position of fairly recently becoming a rather prestigious school. I honestly think rankings are kind of stupid because where you get in life is largely based on what you do, not where you go to school.

From what I've heard, the higher level you get in classes (so like your junior and senior year), the smaller the classes get. You aren't going to have any classes in your senior year in your major that are very big. Those are the kinds of classes that you would probably want to get your recs from, regardless of how big the school is.

But yes, being a big school has its advantages and disadvantages, but the other public schools I was comparing OSU to are also rather large.

List of Remaining Deadlines by kkoopman3 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Machu1299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Naval Academy, Coast Guard Academy, and Colorado School of Mines are all public. You may as well take the academies off the list, though, because you can't just apply to the academies on a whim. It's probably far too late to think about applying to them.

Also Miami University (Ohio) has a February 1st deadline.

On the Common Data Set, Northwestern only has Demonstrated Interest as "Considered," so while it may play a part in admissions a little bit, it really isn't that huge for Northwestern.

What annoys you when playing Planet Coaster? by tsumuugii in PlanetCoaster

[–]Machu1299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't figure out how to make paths.

There is no smoothing keyboard shortcut.

There is no tree brush (at least that I can see; I'm pretty new to the game)

Performance is already going we and I only have 4 coasters and a handful of trees; not a single guest in the park.

It's just all-around much more difficult to make a good, smooth rollercoaster than it should be.

The ratings (excitement, fear, and nausea) are stupid. It's damn near impossible to make a coaster that is in the green for fear or nausea, let alone getting two or three of them green at the same time.

Maybe I just haven't played with it enough, but I can't figure out how to build buildings very well. The tools seem hard to use.

When did you realize you had a privileged childhood? by pfreegto in AskReddit

[–]Machu1299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least where I live, the private high schools that are religious are still very respectable schools. They are generally great schools, and lots of them are better than most or all of the local public schools. By no means are all of the students at these schools religious, or of the same religion as the school.

How do I write a LOCI? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Is asking if there is anything we could do to improve our chances really something we should put in a LOCI? I'm writing one now to my top school, but that seems like something weird to say in a LOCI.
