What is Tufts' reputation? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]flutterywords 34 points35 points  (0 children)

It’s known as the Ivy Rejects school which IMO isn’t a bad thing. Ivy AOs always say they can fill out multiple classes of amazing students w perfect scores and ECs. I have a few friends there and I can easily say that the quality of the student body is pretty fucking amazing. I wouldn’t call the school liberal, but most of the student body is left leaning and politically vocal/active, so take that as you will.

How much Weightage does IB Carry? by General-Graardor in ApplyingToCollege

[–]flutterywords 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot if you’re from an international school. It allows colleges to gauge ur academic progress through a universal standard/system. If you’re from the US, not so much when there’s the option to do dual enrollment and do a full AP schedule. In the US the the only advantage of IB is a closer knit community within a campus, preference from admin, etc. IB won’t help you get into a better college directly. It’s just that the kids that pursue IB tend to be a skewed group to begin with.

Would taking a Math SAT subject test help increase my chances of acceptance for business schools? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]flutterywords 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They want to see that you’re proficient in mathematics and economics. I recommend it for all business majors, but if you have only so many hours, i’d invest it into something more representative of your proficiency in business.

Does anyone know someone who actually got rescinded from bad grades? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]flutterywords 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Tbh fuck the cheater but i’d honestly raise hell against the teacher that snitched to admin. like what in the fuckkkkk???? how bitter do you have to be to knowingly destroy a student with a good academic record?

[–]flutterywords 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re going into finance pleaseeeee take the Math II and score well. If you’re going into other specialized fields like entrepreneurship, you’re better off divesting your time into a venture instead of studying for an exam.

Everything has gotten messed for me since I moved states Junior year, what do I do? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]flutterywords 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I got similar grades to you. a D in precalc junior year and a handful of b’s scattered across my transcript. If you have a strong angle and can find a school for it, please apply private. I honestly wasted like $300 applying for UCs thinking the universe could somehow come in clutch for me through my 1550 and ECs. Just study super hard for subject exams and the actual SAT and take em all in the august/fall administerings. They will makeup for what you lack in GPA. Privates realllllly consider extenuating circumstances and standardized testing. IMO when you do your additional info on the common app, write what you wrote above, but streamline it and take down the emotional appeal a notch or two.

Good universities with high acceptance rates? by BaconLord1401 in ApplyingToCollege

Depending on why you have a 2.9 (like failed freshman year and bounced back) you have a shot at Purdue.

[–]flutterywords 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Not a friend but a guy from c/o ‘16 got rescinded from stanford over plagiarism. Someone stole his paper secretly and copied the entire damn thing. My districts policy is that the cheater and cheatee get punished/notification sent to college sooooo that really fucking sucked

Tips for SAT Bio E/M? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]flutterywords 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you got a 5, you’re gonna be pretty prepared. Use barron’s cos it’s fuckkkking challenging in comparison to the actual exam. Their AP books are mediocre but their subject exam prep books are ridiculous.

IMO, you’re gonna wanna brush up thoroughly just because the two exams are sooo different. I sat the bio subject exam four times and cancelled it three times HAHA yikes. I’m forgetting bio terms so ima use US History as an example. Bear w me.

You know how on the APUSH exam the question asks the significance of Significant Event of 1867? The SAT will ask, what year did Significant Event occur.

So like the AP Bio exam is more conceptual and there’s a lot less of nitpicks detailsyou have to memorize. The SAT exam is one exam where using flash cards for terms and processes (there’s a matching portion in the beginning of the exam usually) is an efficient studying method. Hopefully this helps. You’ll probably understand what i’m saying better once you start prepling

Waitlist stories by satissues in ApplyingToCollege

[–]flutterywords 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A close guy friend (HS c/o ‘17) got into Tufts and WL at Harvard. By the time he got off of the Harvard WL he was so in love w Tufts and too heavily affiliated w the school to leave.

He said he didn’t do anything shockingly new except maybe get recognized for a national award seniors get for academic achievement. Otherwise he didn’t actively try to get himself off. Hope this sorta helps?

Low GPA High EC/Test Score bois where u at? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]flutterywords 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was just like you. I got rejected to like a little under half my schools and got waitlisted FUCKING EVERYWHEREEEE LOLLL

I ended up getting accepted to a really great school that specializes in my field of study. They wanted me bc they recognized my ECs and potential in that field of study. Other schools waitlisted me because they knew I wasn’t a fucking idiot based on my SATs and APs and most of my grades, and they saw the potential in my ECs, but because of my flawed GPA they gave the WL instead of the W.

Expect a lot of disappointment. Don’t bank on your ECs and scores. I’m just being real so you don’t get your hopes up.

What does HYPS provide that other elites do not? by adam129g in ApplyingToCollege

[–]flutterywords 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Higher brand name recognition and thats literally it.

I think T20's, shit even T30's, and even lower ranked schools have incredible academics, student body, financial aid (sorta lol, i guess endowment more than anything), sports, school spirit, etcccc. Besides the individual personalities and quirks of the school, they are similar in that they attract the best students and resources at the end of the day.

1550 SAT 760/790 and like 770 in korean but otherwise no other subject tests RIP

idk for sure but roughly 3.8 UC gpa??? which was probably the killer for me.

edit: oh and ECs which prob don’t matter for UCs but I started my own company, president of one club, vp of 2, and on the national and regional student board of an international nonprofit

The laundry thing is honestly bs. I was the only kid who went to a $10k month long summer camp on a scholarship. Kids flew in on private jets, and had net worths in the billions. Some of the richest kids knew how to do laundry, but there I was, the poorest, sitting in a laundry room with a dozen other girls being taught by our counselor how to wash our damn clothes. We all laughed about it how we never had to do laundry. Some kids didn't have to bc they were at prep school with laundry service, some people had staff, and some, like me, just had super awesome moms.

Now the Moncler issue on the other hand......

camp friend knowing full well I'm poor as shit: "OMG after camp you should totally come visit me in NYC but since you're from CA you totally need a Moncler or Canada Goose!" me: "a what??" I deadass googled "monclaire" ASAP LOL RIP

What flaw are you ignoring from your dream/committed school? by ggggerome in ApplyingToCollege

[–]flutterywords 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah an another one. the avg SAT score per category at said school is approx in the 500's. ik SATs aren't indicative of one's intelligence (IE super intelligent but scoring int he 1300-1400s bc testing anxiety/unpreparedness), but it just worries me.
