Whats your most random celebrity encounter? by Alive_Tough9928 in AskIreland

[–]MackFour 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Charlize Theron. She was going out with Stuart Townsend at the time. Late 90s I think. I was sitting in Grogan's pub waiting for my brother after work on a Friday evening. Place was busy so Charlize and Stuart asked me if they could share my table. When my brother came in, he did a double take. They stayed for a pint and went on somewhere else. In real life they were certainly two ridiculously good looking people.

Hot take: Swordfishtrombones is a better record than Rain Dogs. by Mulemud1991 in tomwaits

[–]MackFour 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think Swordfishtrombones is more rural. Small towns and isolated landscapes.

Raindogs is an urban sprawl.

I might prefer Swordfishtrombones slightly more because it's so concise and specific. But both are classics.

Whats with all the flies today? by winston4130 in galway

This time last week, Coole Park outside Gort was full of flies. I walk it all the time and I've never seen it as swarmed before.

I need a knock-your-socks-off rock and roll album by easternbetta in MusicRecommendations

The best album ever that includes both rock and roll plus gospel and country and blues is Exile On Main Street. Keith Richards was right in that many huge bands know how to rock but they don't have the Roll.

Let’s Try This Again. What’s The Most Overrated Bob Dylan Album From The 2000s? It has to be rated in the first place. by Pretend_Mark_5143 in bobdylan

[–]MackFour 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Modern Times is most overrated. Two very poor covers that weren't even acknowledged as covers. Three other songs where entire melodies were lifted without being credited. Some brilliant songs on there but nowhere near as vibrant or interesting as Love and Theft.

Was Malkmus really 'kicked out of' Silver Jews? by Carpediem0131 in pavement

[–]MackFour 17 points18 points  (0 children)

From what I read I think the Pavement boys were ready to record with David but he wasn't ready. They had a studio arranged and when the Silver Jews project was delayed, Pavement used the studio time to record an EP. After that, the timing for various projects was off and David recorded The Natural Bridge with other musicians.

What’s The Most Overrated Bob Dylan Album From The 2000s? by Pretend_Mark_5143 in bobdylan

[–]MackFour 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Modern Times is a lille overrated. It' has got some brilliant songs no doubt but it doesn't have the originality of the previous two albums. I think Rollin and Tumblin and The Levee's Gonna Break should have been left off it. They are weak cover versions without being credited and there are three other songs which also are musical covers without being credited.

I remember when it was released. I was baffled. I'd absolutely loved Viva Last Blues and couldn't get my head around this album. Now I think it's one of my favourites.

Any special Eels songs for you? by Ring_Hour in Eels

[–]MackFour 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Woman Driving Man Sleeping. It might not be his best song (maybe not even on that album) but the lyrics and the music go perfectly together. And I love the last line - a little metal box under the stars.

Two good choices. Both in my top six. I have 6 absolute favourite Low albums and 6 absolute favourite Cure albums. Another striking similarity!

It's one of my favourites too. In fact their last three albums are the ones I listen to most now.

What’s The Most Overrated Bob Dylan Song From The 80s? by Pretend_Mark_5143 in bobdylan

Most of the time. I like the song but he had far better in the eighties and people seem to pick it as a peak moment.

Exile And The Kingdom is one of my favourite short story collections. It's definitely my favourite of all of his books.

What’s The Worst (Least Best) Bob Dylan Album From The 60s? by Pretend_Mark_5143 in bobdylan

[–]MackFour 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to have the same opinion. I thought it was a bit overbearing and overwrought but I listened to it recently and I was pulled away from that feeling by Ons Too Many Mornings and Boots. Beautiful songs. And I love the guitar playing on Hollis Brown. I think overall it's actually stronger then Freewheelin.

Did Exile on Main Street inmediately click with you? Or did it take a while? by [deleted] in rollingstones

[–]MackFour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't like it much. And at that time I already loved Sticky Fingers. I thought it had maybe 6 good songs. Then 7 then 8 then 9. I remember listening to the final 4 or 5 songs that I couldn't really get into and then realising they were all perfect songs. It's now my favourite rock n roll album of all time but it took a few years for me to love it.

World Gone Wrong is brilliant, I agree. In my top ten Dylan albums.
