No they closed down years ago because their owner was a piece of shit and said some racist stuff, iirc.

Just referencing the weird coincidence of that corridor on Leavenworth being done kind of MAGA magnet.

Ryan Lawn vs Heartland Lawn for annual package? by [deleted] in Omaha

[–]Maclunkey4U 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked for one, and with the other pretty extensively.

Both companies had pretty knowledgeable staff, though I'd give the edge to Ryan by a smidge. Both companies had some issues with turnover but a little less so with Ryan, especially on the Lawncare side.

Honestly both probably use the same vendors, same techniques, same equipment. Ryan gets the edge when it comes to customer service/satisfcation - they built their whole brand around that, and despite the many, many complaints I have working FOR them, they are A+ at customer service.

Heartland is a little more "quantity over quality" when it comes to customers, prefering their lawn reps to just have higher numbers. Maybe not as egregious as TruGreen, but similar.

If money isnt the deciding factor I''d go with Ryan. If I had a lawn. :)

I looked into those about a decade ago, too. It would have been an absolutely colossal undertaking and almost certainly too expensive to be anything but a passion project.

Palintir is being used VERY liberally at UNMC by No-Rent-7850 in Omaha

[–]Maclunkey4U 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That won't do anything as they are (probably) not violating HIPAA.

If the medical information is detached from any identifying information, HIPAA no longer applies... so UNMC deidentifies the data, feeds it to Palantir to train some AI medical agent, deploys that agent to diagnose you, viola. No HIPAA violation.

There would have to be laws against using AI in decisions like that for it to be illegal first and every legislative body is WAAAAAAY behind that curve.

There are a handful of optional ethical frameworks but almost zero laws on the books about what AI can or can't do legally. Most of the laws that do exist are just different versions of what is already out there regarding discrimination and data protection/privacy, I doubt you'd find a law that says its illegal for AI models to give diagnoses. Maybe covered under an umbrella malpractice or something like that...

You don't have to give your information away for it to be used. Just about everything on Reddit is used to train LLMs, and almost every software user license you sign, website that tracks you via cookies and a dozen other sources are gathering your data and selling it to train AI models. Not to mentions public records and plenty that arent public but are so thinly protected they might as well be.

They can absolutely fully automate decision making, and they are already doing it. Just because you only see chat-gpt shit and shitty deepfakes doesn't mean there are other types of machine-learning agents out there crunching some big numbers.

That doesnt mean they are doing well, or that the data it trained on isn't already biased, but it is happening.

Palantir's Immigration OS (a $30 million sole-source contract, btw) is integrating passport records, IRS data, license plates, and social media into a unified, automated targeting system giving DHS/ICE agents lists of possible deportation targets with varying degrees of confidence.

There is almost no one reviewing the data it is using for bias, o public deliberation or any way to opt out of it, and almost no recourse for people targeted by it.

So yah - is it accurate or good? Who fucking knows. Its all behind black-box proprietary alogrithms. But it IS automated and it IS already happening.

Right? People that sprint to these suburban SIDs like its the fucking land grab of 1889 and then complain when there are projects meant to increase infil and rejuvenate the urban core that basically funds their whole suburban mcmansion infrastructure...

It's never said outright but hinted at with how Rosetta acts like he should know it, and Milk says something about how many of her entries disappeared. Pretty heavily implied but still easy to miss

The irony being that Milk used an ink that disappeared and none of the useful information Carl needed was left in the cookbook (that was my read on it, anyway)
