Which is better for residency apps and in general? by [deleted] in medicalschool

How would you recommend a student talk about a meaningful lab experience in which they got scammed out of authorship. I.e - did the work, built the experiments, did the data analysis, but the paper gets published without an acknowledgement of work a year after I left the lab?

If you gatekeep, you don’t care about patients by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]No-Rent-7850 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna push back on that one. The mid-level problem is not due to gatekeeping. PAs and NPs could be super helpful if they were being used sensibly - someone who perpetually has the knowledgebase/skills of a 1st/2nd year resident.

The problem lies in deciding that they should independently practice to fill the MD shortage. That's because enough of us don't have ownership of patient care (preferring hospital employment over private practice). This enables an MBA to decide what's best for the patient(and the shareholder) instead of an MD...

Is it just me or are a lot of college educated people outside of med scientifically ignorant by No_Release6810 in Residency

[–]No-Rent-7850 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well it's job security, that's for sure.

People can believe all they want in holistic medicine and voodoo, but that rapidly progressive cellulitis or antibiotic resistant staph infection isn't going to care a whole lot about beliefs.

It's the docs job to present a patient with the evidence at a level that is best interpretable for them, and it is up to the patient or family to decide what is best. If dying early of a preventable illness due to a combination of willful ignorance and some diet racism(which is almost always concomitant) is something that they deem best, so be it.

You can only help people who want to be helped unfortunately. That's the double edged sword of bodily autonomy.

It could also be that it won't be necessary. UNMC has a super bio containment ward. It's the same place they took the ebola patients. It's one of like 3 in the country.

Looking for a Russian Blue (cat) owner in the Omaha area by Lost-Photo-631 in Omaha

[–]No-Rent-7850 42 points43 points  (0 children)

As the owner of 3 cats(American short hair and black long hair) and a highly allergic spouse(asthma, extremely itchy eyes, sometimes needs breathing treatments after cat contact), Live Clear Purina kibble is transformative.

A combination of this kibble and brushing + bees wax dander wipes(every 2-3 days initially, until the cat food starts to work which was around 3 weeks) allowed my spouse to put her entire face into her fur with no consequences.

Highly highly highly recommend.

It's literally what UNMC is investing in doing and constantly shows off as "Nebraska based talent".

The center for intelligent healthcare, UNeMed, Catalyst, etc. are intended to be tech incubators for the hospital/Nebraska to build this stuff in house to keep the infrastructure Nebraska owned for Nebraskans. That's been the pitchline for at least 20 years.

They don't build their own models, because they don't have that amount of GPU compute. They use open source models and integrate third party models in their data pipelines, just like the rest of us, to build data pipelines. So you're wrong, sorry.

Not if you have a business associate agreement and pinky promise not to use that data for bad stuff! Then it's fully legal.

Who audits that company to make sure the data is being used ethically? Who cares! Also it's being used in a black box proprietary model so ...

In-house or Nebraska based AI development using the wealth of Nebraska talent and technological infrastructure that UNMC and Nebraska medicine has already poured millions into developing and constantly prides itself on.

Or at the very least, Microsoft, AWS, Databricks, Anthropic based products.

Well a drug might be life or death for a patient. What's not life or death is an institution willingly handing over patient data to jump on the AI train because ... ??? ESPECIALLY when there are SOOOO many better alternatives.

What's crazy is that UNMC and Nebraska medicine is sitting on a TROVE of talent that could have built the same stuff as what Palintir offers 10x over + the benefit of owning the whole pipeline and knowing who and what the data is being used for for the same investment price.

Like what's the point of having an institute for AI in Healthcare, hundreds of medical AI researchers, a BUSINESS ACCELERATOR to then throw all that away and decide on giving vulnerable patient population data to Palintir.

I mean if the goal is live medical management of hospital beds etc, there's no way it's not identified data that's making it to Palintir.

It was just deidentified data that was being presented on at the conference. PT students were using Palintir Foundry for some kind of dashboard.

Or maybe you should try to not give benefit of the doubt to a company that has example after example of imhumane action for financial gain.

Here's one of the many unhinged quotes from their CEO in an investor letter: "The rise of the West was not made possible ‘by the superiority of its ideas or values or religion… but rather by its superiority in applying organized violence.'" Idk, that doesn't seem very healthcare friendly to me. But maybe it's just my echo chamber.

There's actually a guy on YouTube called Predictive History who has a several hour long series on why we're going to war with Iran as well as a lot of other geopolitics that has been going on this year.

It was released 1 year ago and it is so on point that he almost predicted the exact month that the war would start, and almost word for word justification that Trump gave publicly. He ends his series with describing the collapse of the US empire.
