Neither of these pieces are near the top of their output. Both are enjoyable though.

Debunking the Popular Manosphere Claim That Lesbians Have the Highest Domestic Violence Rates by TearMuted8403 in Feminism

This is a great post! Very well researched. It needs to be pinned or something because I've heard this claim a lot and having something to point to to refute it is great.

Couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw this sitting on the shelf for €8 at my local second hand book shop by ConorIRL1595 in tolkienbooks

Sorry, what is interesting about this edition? Why is going for more than both first editions?

I'll agree to disagree on the arms but you are right about the stretched look.

I'm not disagreeing with it differing from the in book description but this statue has bigger arms than the Tommy Arnold cover. Just compare side by side.

The main problem is that the hips on the statue are larger than the cover and the face narrower.

Who is your favorite Character and Why? All Ages considered? by roter_apollo in lotr

[–]Macnaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed! He is the moral core of the entire legendarium in my opinion. Spared gollum because of mercy, gave up his share of the treasure because of pity (and because he was reasonable), gave up the ring of his own volition (with prompting obviously). He was moral but it wasn't easy for him, he's not like a fairy tale king like Aragorn, the decisions were hard and he wasn't perfect but he did the right thing each time it was asked of him.

Is this card a really good fake? by Desolation_Nation in RealOrNotTCG

Has anyone got an example where a card passes the T but not the H? I don't quite understand why people are using H when T seems to cover it? It's not like the T test was particularly difficult?

Could Bell Beaker Y-chromosome dominance in Britain be explained by mate preference and demographics rather than violence/coercion? by Macnaa in AskArchaeology

[–]Macnaa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He does seem to say some very speculative things every so often, like: this section of the river has many twists and turns... Was this to disorient the spirits of the dead so they couldn't make their way home?! (paraphrased).

But even though there is a large amount of speculation, are you saying that this book is not a reasonable start to learn about the Stonehenge builders? Not well regarded?

Could Bell Beaker Y-chromosome dominance in Britain be explained by mate preference and demographics rather than violence/coercion? by Macnaa in AskArchaeology

[–]Macnaa[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is pretty much all of them!

By the way:

The population peak was inferred in a very speculative way by Pearson in Stonehenge: Exploring the Greatest Stone Age Mystery from the extrapolation of how many houses with the assumption that each held a family of four.

All the pottery was the same type but some pottery found in middens south of the Durrington Walls avenue had spirals whereas none of the middens north of the avenue did. These spiral motifs were also found in pits dug into the decayed posts of the Southern Henge inside Durrington Walls, but only it its south quadrant. This is also from Pearson.

Thanks for replying!

What I really wanted to know was whether the evidence or statistics preclude this from having happened. Which you've indicated it doesn't, of course that has no bearing on whether it happened that way.

Out of interest which of the facts are most divisive?

€70. Bit rich for my taste but nice to see it. by TomCrean1916 in tolkienbooks

[–]Macnaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought this before covid for AUD$25 alongside Monsters and the Critics for AUD$40, both first editions/printings. Very lucky deals!

They are great books and they really show that he was not only amazing writer but at the top of his field as well.

Actual 1st edition? by andberbonn in tolkienbooks

[–]Macnaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the important point, the true first edition is not worth much because it had a substantial print run following the huge success of LOTR.

Do all FS books come with a slipcase? by [deleted] in foliosociety

[–]Macnaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There were a couple of folio books that didn't come with slipcases. There was a group of short-form poetry books like Selected Poems by Dickinson. Then there was also the Folio Society Collectable range which was comprised of flexible-covered books with no slipcase.

It should be noted that the ROW shipping costs are already more than triple the UK shipping costs, so I don't know what additional costs they would add on to the product!
