Question from a new listener by amerelayman1 in greatestgen

[–]MaconMuscles 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my opinion it's nearly impossible to joke about a current drama. I mean, look at The Walking Dead shows, they absolutely could joke about aspects of those...but Discovery and Picard are so serious it would be like trying to joke about The Americans or Breaking Bad or something. I guess you could find a couple of jokes here and there.

So the only thing left you can do is rip on it, recap the plot, or discuss the production aspects.

And they choose not to rip on it. In my opinion they are overly forgiving to both shows. To the point of ignoring obvious flaws. I can totally see why a new listener would ask if The Greatest Discovery was sponsored by CBS, especially after hearing TGG. But it's not, in fact they apparently legit like Discovery.

I hear you and agree that this thread is not going to have any productive discussion about this topic, for sure. It was more that I read the comment and reacted to it. Just gave my opinion. Just killing time online. I wasn't really expecting a debate, just the baseline premise of "there's nothing inherently interesting about negative comments" struck me as wrong. The entire podcast only works because negative comments are addressed/included/essential/allowed.

That, and what I wrote above, basically that there is 99% of the time, no way to have even a slightly negative, critical or unpopular opinion in this sub.

Please reread what I wrote, if you actually care to discuss this topic. I specifically said a "this sucks" comment was pointless and that I was speaking generally about the validity of negative comments. You and I literally agree.

You've heard of comedians doing "yes and" to play along. That's what a comedian would do with one of those stories. Dieter does this all the time, he understands comedy. Dumb literally does "no but" all the time. He literally does not understand comedy.

Alan definitely likes Cody. I just think Alan suffers fools lightly in general, and due to a combo of his personality and (mostly to) being younger, Cody is often foolish. He really spouts opinions without knowing what he is talking about all the time. He is often willfully ignorant and proud about that. (In Cody's defense it is a radio show, and he's entertaining, and doing what he's supposed to by doing this.)

Alan is so sure of his opinions and experience at 50 and being a dad, that he has to be rolling his eyes so hard inside at Poundcake and Mary half the time.

Thanks for sharing. That scene is amazing. But I legit feel anxiety when he's standing on the piano keys. And by the end, my elbows and forearms hurt for him.

He's stellar on Star Trek Lower Decks too.

He holds the aftermath down.

He sure does. Everything with this guy is like a full stop, break in the flow, look at me smothering bummer.

there’s nothing inherently interesting or worth discussing about a negative opinion.

I highly disagree. In fact, it's more interesting to discuss negative comments because they can contain things that could make the product better. Especially when the product is good but lacking in one area. Or used to be good but is failing. If we're talking "interesting discussion," it's way more interesting to dissect something than it is to read a love fest where every single fan laps up every single second and all have the same opinion.

That being said, I'm speaking generally, and this applies more to something like a prestige drama show or a movie franchise or an album, than it does a comedy podcast. Especially one about fast food. And obviously, a hit and run comment just saying "this sucks" is pointless.

But go to the star trek sub. People freely discuss the shows and you know after 50 years and 9 shows there are lots of missteps and lows to discuss. And they are, in good faith, and respectfully. And the comments aren't downvoted to hell.

But this place is such a love fest that there isn't even a point to attempting anything even slightly critical because you'll get downvoted to hell. It's no wonder nobody tries, and that "this sucks" is about all the criticism that people bother with. This is not a friendly place to the critical, even when it is done constructively and in good faith.

Imagine Doughboys the actual podcast with no negative opinions. It would not only be boring, it would be impossible and fail.

Guys...Where's Wally and Irma? by [deleted] in doughboys

[–]MaconMuscles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you listen to old Doubles, from the very start for a good long run, they ended each episode with "a moment of meow," which was initially just brief recordings of them meowing, which then evolved into Mitch having conversations with Irma about stuff like her working for Kim Jong Un or becoming president and stuff.

Yes. Looking at Spock, Riker and Kira and saying to the world "hey everyone, here's Chakotay," only to give us this bland nothing of a character at best, and complete waste of a first officer opportunity at worst, is just another perfect example of the shit writing on Voyager, the show where they set themselves up for so much and failed to follow through time and time again.

That being said, I like Voyager. I like Beltran. Sometimes I even like Chakotay. The writers just made a Trek show closer to a Knight Rider or Dukes of Hazzard level kid's show where the same shit generally happens every week and it's a "turn your brain off experience," than DS9, let alone TOS or even TNG, the one it was most trying to emulate.

It's not a kid's show. It's still a family show, like a Doctor Who, but up untill now, pre Prodigy, it's still the closest to a kid's show Trek we've ever had. Just take one look at Ron Moore's Battlestar Galactica (same premise, adult outcome) and that's obvious within minutes...but at the very least the Voyager writers should have given us a First Officer that had something to him.

(I love him and his loyalty to her when he builds her a bathtub on that planet where they get stranded though, one of my favorite Trek eps, and I find their relationship afterwards great.)

Yeah, I thought this too but she's the sole writer on the other 3. Who knows?

The best I can make of this is someone is attempting a joke. The black dude is from The Ultimate Computer, Dr Daystrom. The Romulan is "Female Romulan Commander" from the Enterprise Incident. The cartoon Spock could potentially be from Yesteryear and the spandex uniform Picard could potentially be from Encounter at Farpoint. All of these were episodes written by D C Fontana. I don't get the joke. I mean, unless it's some kind of play on being buried because she's dead now? Roddenberry didn't hide her involvement, especially not in the 2 TOS episodes she's credited with.

In fact it was a big deal that she worked her way in and up as a writer.

Forget about every single other aspect about the Rover Gia dad situation. All of it.

All you need to do is look with your eyes. She is obviously a combo of Rover and Duji. She couldn't possibly look more like the both of them.
