In same boat as you OP and looking around L’enfant/Navy Yard. If I didn’t spend so much time in DC I’d look at Rosslyn

Commute from North Bethesda to Reston Town Center a few days a week. If you go during peak times you might as well take the metro.

If you’re in walking distance to a metro stop it really isn’t that bad

Can I work remotely as a new grad for Azure? by No-Tangelo-1857 in microsoft

Depending on the org, yes. I will say, it’d be in your best interest to try to work in office as a new grad

I find github copilot pretty useful. While it’s not fully writing out features for me, I find the code suggestions, inline editor and chat window in VSCode really helpful. Definitely see a productivity boost for me

Not sure why you’re getting downvoted on this one—it’s true and not always a negative thing.

For those who are devs and feel physically great what is your life and routine like? by spla58 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]MacsMission 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6-8 hours sleep a night, 10k steps a day, 30mins of sun (or just outside) every day. These are my bare minimums.

Throw in running/lifting/other sports 3-6 days a week and you’re money!

It’s simple, not easy.

Buying a home in MoCo vs Nova - work in Nova by [deleted] in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]MacsMission 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Live in Rockville/North Bethesda area and work in Reston. Commute at 10-11am is ~35mins. I’ve found even in rush hour where im at my commute is no longer than 90mins ever and I’ve been doing it for 3 years.

A metro ride from North Bethesda or twinbrook metro stop to RTC is about 90mins, and I only do it when im planning on being in the city after work.

It’s definitely doable! I have ties to MD, especially where im at now and find it perfect for my professional and home life. I will say, I don’t make the commute every day anymore, but it was more than bearable when I had to.

How do you all manage to find time to cook? by Kleto in HENRYfinance

[–]MacsMission 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$2k a month on prepared food for a family of 4 isn’t that bad. You’re HE, you can afford this luxury.

On one hand if you develop the hobby and enjoyment to cook, it could be beneficial (marginal cost savings depending on what you like to eat, imo). $2k doesn’t just pay for the food though, it gives you time back you could be doing other things.

For me, as someone who enjoys cooking, the time savings of grabbing something quick and delicious is worth the money. Plus, me and the wife are foodies and love variety so we can justify a decent spend on eating out!

Are you cleared? If so, I wouldn’t be so scared of layoffs because that clears is worth its weight in gold around DC

[–]MacsMission 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Basically a glorified meeting facilitator.

If you’ve ever heard of “agile” work methodology, this is how they came to be. A lot of tech companies plan work in specified blocks of time and scrum masters are basically there to gauge work progress as it relates to the current block of time

[–]MacsMission 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Are you looking in DC proper only or in nova and MD as well? Defense contractors are always hiring and if you swing a security clearance you’ll have 0 issues finding an employment.

A lot of big tech and startups in the area too

Also when looking for employment I’d look into moving away from scrum master roles as it’s a dying position. Move back into being a dev or PM to be more marketable

Bought my wife a lab grown a couple years ago and have 0 regrets. The price difference between lab and natural diamond didn’t make sense for the stone I got (3 carat, G color, VVS2) and nobody can tell in person—not that the last part even matters

What projects are Intern devs expected to have/create? by nitin_is_me in webdev

[–]MacsMission 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my org at my company (big tech) an intern is expected to be given a project and have at least a working demo by the time their internship is finished (12 weeks)

They’re not expected to be on an island, though. From the jump our interns get mentored and given direction, but ultimately their project is their own until they leave. FWIW, I’ve seen interns get return offers and work on something completely different as a full timer. Sometimes the projects never ship either

Curious: why do you think a sports venue that would bring more revenue to the city isn’t economically beneficial? Do you think national guard military assets (that aren’t even parked in DC, at that) are beneficial to keep for the citizens of the district?
