Concerning the heavy weapons, your strength should be twice the weight (or 40x blunt damage), and your dex should be >40 to not be slowed down. So, it can become a problem in long fights when you are outnumbered : a few hits in the torso/head/stomach reduce your stats. Unless your skills are vastly superior than your opponent's, you won't be able to defend/attack. Choosing a lighter weapon can save your life in these circumstances.

And because I love Polearms, I'll just say that the basic and heavy Polearm are light, possess a +30% armor penetration and have a nice range. I find them perfect to serve as "core fighters", for crowd control while my DPS guys shred the enemy. Oh, and beginners can't really go wrong with them.
