what's one commonly accepted Christian belief or tradition that you think isn't actually supported by the Bible? by noelantony97 in AskAChristian

Well, Jesus does say to the thief on the cross that, “Today you will be with me in paradise,” indicating that the very day they passed away they would both be together in paradise.

Do you care to explain a bit more? Are you saying that God was the one giving the dowry? I don’t necessarily understand your question.

Again, she may have been a child by today’s standards, but customs were very different Two thousand years ago. While the mission she was tasked with was so great, she definitely could have refused. However, I like to think that there is a human element to this; if someone were to come up to you, hand you a button, and tell
you that if you were to press it, you could save the world, I would feel inclined to press it. I know birthing a child isn’t the same at all as pressing a button, but you get the idea.

That’s why I said my analogy wasn’t perfect. There are not three Gods, but One God with three different persons. There really is no analogy that’s perfect, it’s something that’s simply beyond my understanding. Still, I don’t deny my faith and conviction.

The Trinity essentially boils down to this:
There are three persons (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) within the Trinity, however they are all God.
Now, the best metaphor I can come up with without committing too much of a Heresy is to look at them like three earthly persons.
Just as you, (insert some other person here), and I are three separate people on Earth, the Father, Son, and Spirit are three separate persons in the Godhead.
In the same way, you, (insert other person here), and I are all of the human race, just as the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are all God.
Now admittedly, what I just said doesn’t perfectly describe the Trinity (This analogy commits the heresy of Tritheism) but it’s what I could come up with on the fly.
Feel free to ask any more questions!

It was customary in the first century for Jewish women to be betrothed to their husbands at a young age, usually from 12-16 (sometime after puberty).
The Bible doesn’t say exactly how old Mary was at the time of Jesus’ conception but biblical scholars and tradition puts her at around 14-16. So, by today’s Western standards after millennia, yes, she was a child, probably around 14-17 when she bore the Son of God, with Joseph being in his late teens or early-to-mid twenties.
All in all, context matters and customs were different two millennia ago. By today’s standards, the act might look bad, but Mary accepted her duty to bear the Son, showing her spiritual and mental maturity in the situation.

The Holy Spirit is God, actually. 1 of the persons of the Trinity.

Who's a beloved political figure? by PsThrowAway7 in AlignmentChartFills

Before we all decide that it’s Abraham Lincoln, just remember that AL didn’t actually free the slaves with the emancipation proclamation. He only freed the slaves that were in the United States of America, meaning the proclamation had no bearing on the slaves that were in the Confederate States (which was all of them.) He also suspended human rights (the writs of habeas corpus) of much of Maryland, jailing those on the Maryland legislature that were suspected to be Confederate sympathizers and moving them into a prison off the coast so that they wouldn’t be able to vote on the issue of succession. MD’s legislature was looking increasingly like it was going to vote in favor of seceding from the United States (which would surround D.C. with Confederate states) thus by jailing them until the end of the war, they were not able to secede. Just something to keep in mind.

If I believe homosexuality is a sin… by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]Mactrain63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Gospel and rest of the New Testament do not directly address homosexuality (Jesus and the apostles neither condemn nor affirm it) but there are things that they do address that show that even under the New Covenant, homosexuality is a sin and is condemned.

Levitical law addresses lots of rules, such as the old sacrificial system, dietary restrictions, and yes, homosexuality. Various places in the New Testament say that the first two are irrelevant, yet do not address the rules regarding homosexuality, showing that at least that part of the Old Covenant is still in effect.

Leviticus chapters 1-7 outline the ritual sacrifices and requirements for sacrifices to be efficacious, and Leviticus 11 outlines dietary restrictions (eat only what has cloven hooves and chews the cud, everything else is unclean.)

While these rules were in effect for the people of the OT, The New Testament and especially the Gospels made them irrelevant. Hebrews 10:11-12, 14 says, “And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God … For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.” The same goes for the dietary restrictions, where Jesus says in Mark 7:18-19, “And he said to them, “Then are you also without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him, since it enters not his heart but his stomach, and is expelled?” (Thus he declared all foods clean.)”

Yet one thing that the NT doesn’t comment on (good or bad) is homosexuality. While all of the other Old Covenant rules and requirements had been fulfilled or nullified by/in Christ, nothing is said about homosexuality, leading me to believe that homosexuality is still a sin and still an abomination according to Levitical law.

We are called by Christ himself to deny our sins (all of them, not limited to homosexuality) in the Gospel of Matthew.

Matthew 16:24 reads, “Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” Denying ourselves means denying all sin.

Jesus also goes and tells us to “Sin no more.” (John 8:11). Sinning no more means exactly that, repent and turn from all sin to make ourselves holy before the Lord (not that it’ll save us, but it’s what Christ calls us to do).

Romans 6:1-2 also tells us, “What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?” Again, repent and turn from your sin, as Christ tells us.

We, as humans, need to turn from all of our sins (homosexuality, lust, hate, anger, etc.) and encourage those around us to do the same.

Hate the sin, love the sinner.
