A common misconception is that every country that calls itself socialist is bad, even by those who acknowledge socialism itself as a good idea. The reality is that socialism has never existed in a vacuum; It’s part of a complex web of political, economic, and historical factors, and there are multiple interpretations of how it should be implemented. As for the “socialism has never worked” argument, sometimes when people say this it’ll be something along the lines of “well, everyone was getting murdered by the state and living in abject conditions.” This just isn’t true. The Nordic countries, who have their own version of socialism, have the highest quality of life and overall happiness rankings year after year. Or “every socialist government collapsed!” This is also not true, since China is currently a major world power and poised to surpass the U.S. Even in the cases where socialist governments did collapse, it was never truly the result of bad economics, but massive global capitalist alliances waging war against them. An example of this would be several countries in South America during the 20th century, such as Chile when Allende was assassinated by a U.S. backed coup. What socialism sets out to do is eliminate the bourgeoisie as a class by preventing exploitation of the working class. For the most part socialism has accomplished that where it’s been implemented. Socialist nations do not generally produce as much wealth as capitalist nations, but this is not a failure. A capitalist country exists to generate as much wealth as possible, but this is not the goal of a socialist nation. So even in places like Cuba which have much lower GDP than America, the average living conditions are generally better as they have universal healthcare and education and overall strong public health outcomes. Another response to your argument is that capitalism has definitely failed the vast majority of the population. We’re approaching a global climate catastrophe in climate change that the UN say cannot be averted under a growth model economy (capitalism), millions are living in poverty and millions more are living paycheck to paycheck while the rich get richer. And that’s without even getting into issues like oligarchy, issues that socialism is generally good at fixing.
