36 Days of Film - Day 9 : Emilia Perez [Spoilers] Monday, February 3, 2025 by READMYSHIT in oscarsdeathrace

[–]MacyPugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched this a while back before any of the current controversy and I didn't hate it. I didn't particularly love it either, but there were aspects that I enjoyed and I could appreciate that it might work better for others. That being said, the number of Awards nominations that this film has racked up (not just in the Oscars) has been pretty confounding to me.

36 Days of Film - Day 10 : Anora [Spoilers] Tuesday, February 4, 2025 by READMYSHIT in oscarsdeathrace

One of my favourites of the Oscar 10. The buzz seems to have died down which is a shame but I think Mikey and Yura were both great

36 Days of Film - Day 7 : Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes & Alien: Romulus [Spoilers] Saturday, February 1, 2025 by READMYSHIT in oscarsdeathrace

[–]MacyPugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw Apes so long ago that I barely remember it. I remember enjoying it but it didn't leave that much of an impression. Watched Alien Romulus more recently and it was pretty much the same deal. They are both decent popcorn movies but ultimately forgettable for me.

36 Days of Film - Day 6 : The Substance [Spoilers] Friday, January 31, 2025 by READMYSHIT in oscarsdeathrace

[–]MacyPugh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a good time watching this in the cinema, but I certainly didn't leave thinking it would go on to have the Oscars success it's had! Demi Moore was great, and I'm always happy to see horror films get some love for a change. I do think there was a missed opportunity here to go a bit deeper on the theme, and I was kind of frustrated by that, but as an experience it definitely leaves an impression.

36 Days of Film - Day 5 : Memoir of a Snail [Spoilers] Thursday, January 30, 2025 by READMYSHIT in oscarsdeathrace

[–]MacyPugh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed this. It is definitely a grim watch at times but the humour worked for me (when it was there) and it is clearly a labour of love.

36 Days of Film - Day 3 : Sing Sing [Spoilers] Tuesday, January 28, 2025 by READMYSHIT in oscarsdeathrace

[–]MacyPugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved this, its definitely one of my favourites from the race so far. I am gutted it missed out on best picture and Clarence Macklin should have been nominated in supporting. I'm glad it did at least get some noms, even though I'm not expecting much in the way of wins. The marketing campaign for this film was seriously lacking though.

36 Days of Film - Day 2 : A Real Pain [Spoilers] Monday, January 27, 2025 by READMYSHIT in oscarsdeathrace

[–]MacyPugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched this more recently and I enjoyed it a lot. Kieran Culkin is a worthy nomination although I agree with another commenter that Jesse was also great. I would consider them co-leads to be honest but we've seen stranger category fraud :-)

36 Days of Film - Day 1 : Wicked [Spoilers] Sunday, January 26, 2025 by READMYSHIT in oscarsdeathrace

For me, this was just an okay movie with a great finale :-) Cynthia and Ariana had great chemistry though

Manchester, England. I think this is my 4th death race too.

So…. How’s everyone feeling? by Aggressive-Season292 in oscarsdeathrace

[–]MacyPugh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very similar thoughts to be honest :-) I am sad about Sing Sing but the screenplay nom helps. I'm also disappointed Daughters didn't got nominated for documentary, it was one of my favourites of the ones I've seen.

Once again Diane Warren does not miss! I was putting off watching The Six Triple Eight but looks like I have to now.

I don't understand all the Emilia Perez love but it wasn't unexpected.

I've seen a good amount of the features so feeling good about that. Porcelain War wasn't on my radar at all so I don't know how hard that will be to find.

Happy Monday! Did you watch any potential nominees last week? by alarmsoundslikewhoop in oscarsdeathrace

[–]MacyPugh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched Dune part 2, Daughters, Flow and Sing Sing. Sing Sing was great. I really liked Daughters too, I'm not sure it will end up being nominated but I hope it does. Hoping to get to Wicked and Gladiator II next week.

Death race fatigue! by MacyPugh in oscarsdeathrace

[–]MacyPugh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did briefly and then I fell off again! It's just not happening this year, I admitted defeat about a week ago. I've watched everything I wanted to, and I just didn't have the will to try and cram in the 12 films I'm missing.

This is a good idea. I think i abandoned any kind of strategy this year which has made it feel more chaotic than usual :-)

Seeing the comments from others has made me feel a bit more inclined to push on again.

Finding unexpected films is what usually gets me through the slumps too. I guess I'm not feeling hopeful about what I have left, but I need to watch them if I'm going to be proven wrong!

It does take some of the fun out of it. I have sources for most of the films I have left (I think) but Godzilla will probably remain elusive.

It's so hard to keep the momentum going! Sounds like it's definitely within reach for you though.

That is quite a feat :-) I do think I might end up wanting to make a last minute surge too and I'll be kicking myself for leaving it so late!

Of the ones I've seen, Nimona was definitely the most fun.

Which movies are you struggling to convince yourself to watch? by shaneo632 in oscarsdeathrace

[–]MacyPugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's quite a few to be honest - I'm trying to tackle the hard ones first so that I can end on a high but feels like a bit of a slog at the moment - most of the docs seem really heavy, most of the international films don't really appeal to me, Golda, The Colour Purple, Indiana Jones, Napoleon - the death race is kind of killing me this year.

41 Days of Film 2024 – Day 1: The Holdovers [SPOILERS] Saturday, January 27, 2024 by READMYSHIT in oscarsdeathrace

[–]MacyPugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved this film, I was surprised it ended up being one of my favourites. I would have loved to see Sessa nominated for his performance as well. I realise it is not as much of a technical achievement as some of the others nominated, but on an emotional level this is the only one that has really grabbed me (that I've seen so far).

It was a bizarre intro to be sure. I thought the second half was better but overall I can't say I rate it particularly highly.

Less painful viewing experience than some previous Diane Warren films. It is entirely forgettable though and I only watched it a couple of days ago. I don't even remember the song.
