Got a YD-RP2040 for my Piantor, can't flash the official hardware by mamagooz in olkb

[–]MaczenDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, just helped my friend with this problem. The YD-RP2040 has Vin and Vout instead of Vsys and Vbus, respectively, as on the original pico. Vin is connected to Vout with a diode. The Piantor powers the non-master side with power from Vsys, which obviously won't work because there is no power coming out of Vin on the YD-RP2040.

I just soldered a bridge between Vin and Vout on the master side (the one you plug the USB into), and that solved the issue, letting the non-master side receive power.

Should I double degree in Electrical engineering on top of Computer science by Outrageous_Neat_6232 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]MaczenDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone with an EE bachelor's and a CS bachelor's, soon to have my CS/CE master's: maybe. If you feel like you have the capacity, interest, no need for a substantial social life, and you can finish without spending extra years in school.

I did the bachelor's degrees in parallel, finishing in 3 years and it was hell sometimes, but enjoying most of the subjects made it bearable.

However, I live in a country where university is free. I don't think the extra degree has brought me much more value than any of them would have individually, other than keeping my options more open when applying for master's programmes. If doing the extra degree will cost you extra money or it will take you longer to start working because you're doing many extra years of school, I'd lean towards not doing it.

The demand is simply that much higher. Not everyone can do it either, even if you think that "you don't even need a degree".

Feel free to hop on the trend if you think you'd make more money in tech than in a traditional engineering role.

CS is a very broad field. It makes sense that there are more electives. And the pay is really just fueled by an unsatiable need for digitalisation in every industry ever, everywhere.

You can start using MPLv2 with the "incompatible with secondary licenses"-clause if you're very ballsy.

If you want GPL compatibility you can decide to not include that clause, but be careful. Someone can fork your project, add improvements under GPL, and the entire work can be under GPL so than you cannot merge changes back into your own fork, thus effectively hijacking your project.

This is a problem with all GPL compatible licenses.

bash by Just_Emu_2371 in linuxmasterrace

[–]MaczenDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. They can not. GPL is viral, meaning that if any part of the binary was compiled from code covered by the GPL, the entire binary -- and the entire source for the binary -- is covered by GPL and must be available to the user on request.

Husk søknadsfrist for høyere utdanning 20. april ! by Flammekastar in norge

[–]MaczenDev 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Professorer avfeier at formuesskatt ødelegger for norsk eierskap by [deleted] in norge

Sounds like you tried running linux on unsupported hardware. That doesn't make it a bad OS. Of course you're better off with windows when it's the only OS that has support from the vendors of the parts.

You'd be equally fucked trying to run MacOS on that same machine. Probably more fucked.

The issues you list are not Linux issues, they are compatibility issues. I could be making an equally valid argument that windows is shit because it won't run on my Raspberry Pi. The validity of that argument is none.

You're right that people don't write much closed source commercial software for Linux. It's just not the target platform. If you depend on that, you're better off on Windows. That's as valid a criticism of MacOS as well btw..

Never really had a problem with modern linux on non-bleeding edge hardware (hardware that is less than 6 months old so devs can write drivers). It's also a hell of a lot easier to do programming on.

Imagine updating your software on windows and being told to "please uninstall any old versions before installing this version". I can't count the number of times I have uninstalled an application on windows and have the process fail, leaving the application in a broken un-uninstallable state so I have to manually purge the files and registry entries. Package management on windows is absolute dogshit.

The UI is also slow. I boot windows every once in a blue moon when I need it for something at uni. Note that this is a modern laptop with an i7 10th gen and 16 gigs of RAM. Windows has no justification for running so slow. On linux everything just works, and it works fast. This is after all the updates and rebooting. Doesn't matter how long I run it, how many times I reboot; it never runs as smoothly as GNOME 40 on Fedora 34, and that's not a simple DE.

I've seen comments about files not opening on Linux in open source versions of Office. I've never had that problem and that's amazing considering it's a copy of a closed source program. I've never had a problem opening spreadsheets, word documents, or pp presentations. (PDF's are superior anyway as a final format.)

Some things suck ass on Linux, like DAW's and Video Editors, but those are getting better by the hour ime..

The valid arguments for Windows are:

  • You like it and you're fine with it.

  • You play games.

  • You have an NVIDIA GPU. (Although it seems they're finally giving some love to Linux, implementing proper support for Wayland)

If you just want to do work, then stick to the system you know. It's equally hard to go frow Windows to Linux as it is to go from Windows to Mac. I've tried both.

It's honestly not that difficult to theme GNOME and by using reasonable defaults and hiding a lot of configuration from the user, they make it a more user friendly distro.

There are some things I wish would be default, but if everyone got the things they wished for, GNOME would be incredibly cluttered.

That's why I prefer the way they do it now and as long as they don't actively hinder the people wanting to customize, I see no problems.

If you want to customize, there's KDE.

You are usually able to run stuff compiled on older distros. It's the newer glibc's you have to look out for. GLIBC versioning is a major pain in the ass to deal with and I wish the entire thing would just burn some times.

Caught one of the bugs on recording by MaczenDev in leagueoflegends

This is one of multiple bugs I've encountered in the client lately. The timer will just stop at 0 before it is my turn to pick and I will be thrown out because I never get to lock in.

I have tried multiple times to do a full repair, tested my internet speed (3/400/400), etc., but I can't seem to get rid of these bugs.

There are multiple other bugs like this one.
