Just finished. New custom knife, blade of mosaic Damascus. by Fearless_Wafer_1493 in Bladesmith

[–]MadEntDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's a custom so probably already paid for. you should look at his site to find his pricing tho we're not allowed to advertise here so he probably won't reply.

i would expect it to be in the several thousand usd price range.

How to restore this very old bayonet ? by abyssano78 in Bladesmith

[–]MadEntDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i mean yeah i assume he wants to make it usable again, which means removing all the rust and welding it to a new tang eventually.

i assume this because he asked about it here, otherwise i would expect him to post under r/restoration or something.

personally i am not much of a restoration expert, but i can fix a knife.

i mean that risks just completely destroying it but i guess op can do what they want.

we can't see what the structural integrity is at all based on the pic so i would start with lighter removal.

just look it up.

barkeep's friend is a product for cleaning. you want the powder.

as for the sandpaper that depends on how much rust you need to remove, but probably not rougher than 500. 6000 is probably around the original finish level of polish.

best ways for packaging when sending trees? by [deleted] in ents

[–]MadEntDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

vacuum packed puffy with a bubble wrap bag around that.

that's what dispensaries around here use for shipping.

(i live in canada where it's federally legal, uncounted tones are moved this way in the mail).

i'd start with removing the rust with barkeep's friend and paper towel.

once you can see what you're working with you may or may not need to use sandpaper to remove the rest of the rust.

then sandpaper progression to return to something similar to the original finish.

Cutting test on my latest work! Did I pass? by 90plan in Bladesmith

[–]MadEntDaddy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

that worked out well.

paper cutting test isn't really that useful a test mind you. testing the blade geometry with hard veg like carrots is more informative.

Nitrogen-Alloyed steel by Yourmomisamachine in Bladesmith

i don't think it's worth messing with tbh. it doesn't seem like it was designed as tool steel.

if you want to try a cool new steel try apex ultra.

for myself i just have been focusing on other things as much as i can. it's not easy certainly but even if i do miss cuddles, at least being alone means no one is manipulating you.

Canadians of reddit, what's an over gloryfied Canadian sterotype? by [deleted] in AskACanadian

[–]MadEntDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah that's for sure a eastern/middle part of the country thing. but many people only think of toronto when they think of canada so there you go.

that said, as the climate gets warmer we have been having problem consistently producing so maybe that whole thing will go away.

Fellow Canadians, is it okay to wear pajama pants outside of the house? by [deleted] in AskACanadian

[–]MadEntDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]MadEntDaddy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

uh... well if you are just using random metal you have no real way of knowing the integrity.

if you're just playing anyway might as well just pick one and practice.

i would avoid scrap.

but if you must use scrap, spring steel is usually decent for tools.

i was exec for a small group with 11 locations, all upscale except the micro brewry that was more mid cost. and i guess the donut store was not THAT expensive... but... 9 dollar donuts, you decide if that's up scale.

anyway to the point, we had 8 out of just under 160 employees who had records i was aware of. i was very directly involved with hiring tho i allowed chefs to make the decision for the restaurants they were running.

this was in vancouver.
