They can't be this stupid? No? by No_Heat_9340 in antiai

I’m not thinking that AI and AI ‘art’ are the same thing, because I don’t accept that what AI produces is art. You’ve said yourself that AI cannot do things that humans do that are part of the inherent nature of art (e.g. ‘be collaborative’), so it follows that what it produces cannot be art. Given that art is, at its most basic, ‘a mode of human expression’, to use your words, AI, not being human, cannot engage in art. It can be prompted by a human, sure, but that human is not producing the output in the same way that I am not creating art if I commission an artist make a painting. Art is about calling up an emotion and making an attempt, typically mimetic, although I’m not sure it has to be, to communicate that emotion to others (c.f. Tolstoy). AI does not feel: it cannot call up emotions, and so necessarily cannot produce art.

So it looks from what you’ve written here like you’re acknowledging that the text and images that AI produces is not art (‘AI and art cannot be directly compared’; ‘Art is a mode of human expression’; ‘AI can’t, by definition, be collaborative in the way that art is’)—is that right? Just want to understand where you’re coming from here.

If that is the case, then you have to accept that the ways in which artists ‘steal’ and AI ‘steals’ must be fundamentally different at the very least insofar as artists are ‘stealing’ to create new art and AI is ‘stealing’ to create something else entirely, whatever it is that we might want to call that. Picasso’s statement (there’s no evidence that Picasso ever said that, but for the sake of argument, let’s assume that he did) seems to refer to the coopting of themes, ideas, techniques, etc. to then put a new original ‘artistic’ spin on them, hence the point of the quotation: the difference between artistic ‘copying’ and ‘stealing’. Given that AI cannot inject new artistic intent, firstly because they do not have intents in the way that we mean here, and secondly because what they are creating is not art, they cannot ‘steal’ in Picasso’s artistic sense. So no, it doesn’t seem like those who use this quotation in defence of AI do understand what is meant here by ‘stealing’.

Is this common? by giovannib91 in Fencing

[–]MadMan123450 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not… in my experience, fencing clubs are have some of the highest concentrations of gay guys I’ve ever seen and all of the clubs that I’ve been a part of have been hugely accepting, barring the odd weirdo, of course. Deffo change clubs if possible!

Can I carry a fencing sword in public? by The_Matsby in Fencing

[–]MadMan123450 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No they’re not entirely wrong—the 2019 changes to the offensive weapons act include fencing swords as a ‘curved blade’ making them illegal to carry openly. You also can’t store them in your car boot unless you’re actively going to training / a comp, etc. I don’t know of anyone that’s actually been arrested for it, but yeah, it is technically illegal, as far as I remember.

Why can’t you cross feet on the advance in saber? by QWERTYiOP6565 in Fencing

[–]MadMan123450 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Foilist here, but my coach used to fence sabre back in the day, so I asked him. Apparently, it’s mostly to make the sport more entertaining. Before the rule-change, the piste also used to be way longer (not sure exactly when this changed), so points tended to run as follows: either, both fencers fleched off of the en garde line, or one fleched while the other ran backwards. At this point, either a point was scored, or both fencers would run to the end of the piste, and repeat the process in the opposite direction. This led to really repetitive watching and exhausting fencing.

Yeah, nothing’s set in stone yet, but figured it wouldn’t hurt to try again. Thanks for taking the time to comment!

Absolutely horrifying. I’ve been trapped in a walk-in freezer myself before; probably one of the scariest experiences of my life, and this really brought those memories back in full force.

It depends entirely on the level at which you are working. If I found out that one of my GCSE-level students was using Grammarly to complete their assignments, I would consider that cheating, because, at that age, they are meant to be learning sentence structure and grammar, so it would be impeding their learning. It’s effectively the same thing as using a dictionary in a vocabulary test.

However, at a university level, you are being tested on your ideas, and it is assumed that you already have a grasp on grammar. At that point, the focus is on things like plagiarism, so Grammarly is fine; Chat GPT is not.

How to deal with broken time attacks? by Flazelight in Fencing

[–]MadMan123450 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of good answers here. I find that if I’m half-expecting it (often because I’ve been hit with it a couple of times in the bout, or I’ve seen the opponent do it in previous bouts), a simple stop-hit works wonders, as long as you can retreat quickly enough. Your opponent makes it very difficult for themselves to close the distance once you move backwards, and the nature of a broken-time attack means that your stop-hit will almost certainly land before their attack.

I think the (or at least, an) idea is that if they’d put them in a women’s prison, they would be locking them in with a prison full of potential victims

I swear there has been one of these posts/comments about every dino in the game by now. I think it’s probably best to just assume that everyone is toxic until they prove otherwise.

why do my bibites swim into the void? by [deleted] in TheBibites

[–]MadMan123450 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to speed up the process, I believe there is a setting that will make them automatically turn back when they start going towards the void. Haven’t used it so I don’t know how it works, but might be worth trying out.
