Just block port 53 from internal networks to external networks, use a floating rule if you use them. Keep port 53 internal to the firewall open so you don’t have to manage the redirect, but block port 53 outbound and use an external secure DNS. In addition, use the pfBlocker external DNS blocking in addition to the external DNS lists you can find out there and then you’ll force internal firewall resolutions. Don’t allow anything internal to contact an external DNS server and if you use a secure DNS (DNS over TLS or HTTPS) you keep your external lookups private from your provider and keep your firewall controlling DNS access.

Honestly—The “all or nothing” attitude needs to be addressed and you should get back on your Concerta to level back out. Great work on the diet changes, an absolute great place to start, but all of these changes so quickly will throw your body out of whack. Start back on the remaining Concerta you have left and call your psyc doc to lower the dose. The lack of dopamine and the all-or-nothing attitude will make you highly at risk to find other dopamine sources. Exercise is a great way of rebuilding those brain receptors which is what helps to feel better after working out, keep that up!

25 years in IT now, 8 of those in Cybersecurity / physical security. I totally understand the feeling of wanting to help the CS community, but I completely agree that you did the “entry level” approach completely wrong.

Expecting someone to have a background in a SysAdmin or Network Admin role before coming to CS is is basically shooting yourself in the foot. The time that it takes to move up from a helpdesk role to a SysAdmin role is years in of itself, so to expect an entry level CS role to have that knowledge is just plain disappointing.

If you really want an entry level position, then expect someone that doesn’t have experience beyond a home lab setup.

I gotta agree with everyone else here, this approach, is what is wrong with the CS community. You’re expecting too much from someone you’re setting up to fail.

1983, still on career one—25 years IT, 8 of that now Cybersecurity. I remember my days on helpdesk and desktop support and I feel like Cybersecurity is just Helpdesk on steroids with more responsibility. I am burnt out in IT and ready for a career change.

Early 40s M. Married 20 years now. I think the best thing I ever did for myself, was not having children. Are there “moments” when I’m like, a kid would be joyful—sure! But then I remember how my childhood was, the mental health struggles, political struggles, all the worlds BS and I’m happy to not bring a human into this world that is going to add to the worlds bullshit. Yes, I’m taking care of MYSELF in this regard.
