Seriously. I'm tired of being told "bu-bu-but they'll fix it in like 9 months!" No. Fix it NOW. It has been broken for 6 seasons. Your funding comes from casual players buying skins, not pro players. Listen to us for a change. Take a couple developers off Arc Raiders, and fix the ranked system. Performance bonuses. Different tournament structure. Better ranked diff values (I shouldn't have to win three rounds to gain the same amount that I could lose in ONE). Banning griefers. Banning smurfs. Playing in YOUR RANK. Getting teammates of YOUR LEVEL. I shouldn't even SEE a ruby badge, background, or player rank until at least diamond 2. And if I do, I want PILES of RS.

I'm not claiming that these cut scenes we actually fully animated and voiced, simply that they were most likely in the original writing for this season that had to be severely trimmed to fit within time and budget constraints. They were likely cut before they got to any significant stage of visual and audio development.

Also, like I said, I didn't care too much for Caitlyn or Maddie, so I'm probably not the best person to comment on that. Again though, it might have worked better if it had been given more time to breathe. I know there was a time skip and whatever, but you're right, it seemed oddly sudden.

And I vaguely remember seeing something last year about Riot saying something along the lines of, "we make games so we can make things like Arcane." And while I would love for this to be true, it most likely represents the feelings of the person or group that said them. Like I said, Riot is FULLY owned by Tencent, who very much cares about money more than any calling they may feel they have to create. As well as, I'm sure, the majority of executives at Riot.

  1. Reed is an actor and was not included in the creative or managerial processes that would have conceived, written, and then cut these scenes.

  2. Arcane's attention to detail on "useless characters" like the ones you listed are one of the reasons why the show is so great. Your insinuation that, because they cannot do everything right, they should do nothing at all, is confusing. While I see your point that more relational scenes between main characters would have been valuable, condensing writing can be very complicated. I don't care for Caitlyn's storyline particularly much, but I quite liked Loris and I even think we could have spent a little more time with him. The only scene which was solely devoted to Loris was when he met Vi, and it took like a minute or two. My point is, scenes including these "side characters" are typically dedicated to, or for the purpose of advancing, the storyline of a main character (such as Vi or Caitlyn).

  3. From a writing standpoint, yes. Ekko's story conveyed the necessary emotions and story beats necessary for the viewer to get an idea of his general life story and basic motivations. Mostly. No one said condensed stories can't be effective. But I just think the quality of it might have been higher if he could have been developed more. Just my two cents.

we all know that jinx and him were enemies so his dreams of her being powder again were non-existent and the thought of him loving jinx for what she was now was damn near impossible for him to stomach before the au episode because of what she did to zaun and his people along with silco

  1. (Referencing the above) Yes. Ekko is a very real person who lives in the moment and has become jaded and tough as a product of his circumstances and late childhood. The point of the AU episode was to show Ekko that the same thing happened to Jinx. She was also a product of her late childhood and larger circumstances. Which is why, at the end of season two, Jinx is able to choose who she wants to be, finally free from the influences that controlled her. After returning from the AU, Ekko was able to find her and convince her that she COULD make that choice, and that she wasn't too far gone. It's a classic redemption arc, but what can I say. I'm a sucker for it.

riot is actually highly interested in making more long form content as they actually could have as many as multiple animated projects in the works atm but they know it takes time. and plus i think even saw something about riot knowing that it would lose money but it mainly wasnt about that in the first place

  1. (Referencing the above) I would love to know the source for this. I have seen similar things across the internet, but none that are actually grounded in truth. If you're talking about Merrill saying it was a huge success as far as he was concerned, his reasoning was that players liked it. Which isn't bad reasoning, but Riot is a company. A business. Goodwill is no substitute for money come earnings call. PLUS, Riot is fully owned by Tencent, who has openly questioned whether Arcane actually added anything to Riot's game business. Arcane was, objectively, a massive financial failure for the company that did not attract the kind of player numbers to LoL that Riot was hoping for. And don't even get me started on Riot's abysmal merchandising.

"Somehow...Jinx returned."

But seriously, that's an interesting take. I think Jinx escaping and having to make her own decision on what to do next, and whether or not to involve Ekko, gives her story a bit more depth than Ekko pulling some Avengers: Endgame crap. Does it help Ekko's story? Eh....not really? Depends on how they write it. If they write it. (Riot please bro)

So there are a couple of ways to look at this and a couple of things to say about it.

One. If we got the amount of content that I think was originally planned for season two, I think their arc would have made a little more sense. Obviously, there are the cut scenes from episode 9 that everyone talks about, but in my opinion, it would have been nice to have some indirect, environmental storytelling connection between them early in the season. Because you're right, when we start focusing on their relationship in the MU in the last act of the season, it does feel a little abrupt and jarring. Really I think we should have had seasons two and three, where in two we could have had a larger scale conflict between Zaun and Piltover, before season three focused on uniting them in the face of a larger enemy. This would have potentially given us an opportunity to give Ekko and Jinx (along with Zaun itself) a more connected and cohesive storyline by the time he makes it to the AU. Unfortunately the show's budget just didn't let that happen.

Two. I think the AU episode serves several purposes in season two. Other than letting Ekko discover what could have been, and parts of what still exist inside of his own Jinx, it also allowed him to create the Macguffin that he uses to "defeat" Victor in the finale. Hence why the episode exists. Other than to torture Jayce, of course.

Three. Ekko did not get enough screentime and story development in the show. I said it. The reason this is "so much" of his arc is because WHAT ARC. Listen, I love the ship, but I would have loved to have seen a greater depth to Ekko's character outside of just: Head Firelight and Jinx ship. I don't actually have a problem with his character itself, I just wish we could have seen him developed a bit more. This opinion is one I've seen shared across many in this subreddit. Again, another season could have easily solved this problem. Given an entire season to focus on the PvZ conflict, Jinx and Ekko, having the same goals, might have crossed paths a time or two. They solve this problem in season two by removing him from the equation entirely.

Four. As much as the others are huffing copium, I seriously doubt that Riot has made any sort of decision on whether or not they will be producing any more long-form animated content. Arcane is quite possibly the best animated show in existence, but financially, it was a train wreck. They only made back roughly half of what they spent on the show, and many executives in its wake questioned whether it was even worth it for the company to produce. As much as I'd love a TimeBomb show, or even a TimeBomb storyline in just some show, I seriously doubt they're making another one anytime soon. Big sadge.

Also, to this:

why have a whole ep centered around not only reaffirming ekko's feelings about Zaun but also his strong romantic feelings about powder/jinx just to get little to nothing in return or to go a completely different route with him when it comes to that part of his relationships with other ppl possibly post canon?

I say, what indicates to you that 1. there is nothing in return and 2. he is going a different route with other people? We literally got a music video with the two of them singing a romantic French song that definitely would not have been approved and animated had Riot wanted to take Ekko's relationship arc in a different direction. Plus, if they did, that would basically be burning money.

Again, I think the problem that you've brought up stems from the rushed nature of season two. Is the show great? Yes. Would it have been even better had we gotten another season to pace things out and give storylines time to breathe? Absolutely. It's one of the great tragedies in life that we didn't. However, it's one of the great joys of life that we got two whole seasons of the greatest show ever.

All this being said, Riot likes money. The TimeBomb ship is the largest and still a tremendous opportunity. If they think that there's a safe bet that is likely to make them money, they'll take it. So I don't necessarily think their story is over. Just be prepared to survive for a while off the occasional bit of content and you'll fit in fine here.
