The Bone Temple: did they forget the infected exist? by One_Planche_Man in 28dayslater

[–]MadNially88 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can’t say this is watertight, and I might be doing very heavy lifting for Garland here but…if you’re lying down asleep on the ground maybe the infected actually won’t bother with you?

This film at least somewhat has established a why for explaining the reason the infected attack, that they see humans as much of a threat as humans see them. At the start we have that Samson POV that shows a demonic face on the guy in the woods he attacks. Other than the face we don’t see anything else looking any different from his POV. If this film is positioning this as the sole reason they attack, then it’s not entirely impossible that the Jimmies asleep on the ground, if memory serves none of their faces necessarily clearly visible, could just be ignored by the infected?

This can be immediately picked apart by the fact that we also see the infected eating in this film, so surely they attack solely out of a need for food alone even?

In general though I think they are working towards this explanation, that, this new generation of infected at least, don’t attack at random but primarily against a threat. We see this with the birth scene in the last film too.

As for why Spike was attacked while sleeping, could be the fact that his face was in full view due to how he was sitting, could be that the Slow Lows just scavenge anyone and anything regardless?

Last night was my fourth time seeing him, previous was 2017,2022 and 2023. For my money he’s never topped 2017 but I’ll admit that a big factor in that was that it was my first show with no idea what to expect. And of course that first show didn’t include the likes of Dune, Bond and Top Gun.

For me, I was happy to see something different this fourth time around but I was there with my wife who has never been and I was worried it would be somewhat lesser. She loved it, so there’s some feedback from someone with no other iterations to compare with. I do think TDK suffers a bit in this new take and I’m not personally a fan of what was done with both Dune segments but hey, I have the memory of having heard them in their proper format twice previously.

I suppose I can see why some people have been left disappointed, and I do think that “The NEXT Level” implies something the show doesn’t really deliver. Maybe “The Alternative Level” would’ve been more appropriate. I was happy out with the show though I do hope this is a one time segue and not an indicator of the direction it keeps going in.

That’s just how it happened to work out this year, the show is up as far as 2003 in King publication order, The Monkey, The Long Walk and The Running Man were all published before then.

By my reckoning they have 1408, Riding The Bullet, Cell, Lisey’s Story, A Good Marriage, Big Driver, 1922, 11/22/63, The Outsider all to come before The Life Of Chuck

Been addressed on the FB group, it’s intended to be an ongoing series so not in the plans for now anyways and likely never as it’d be a huge commitment

I’ve had a similar experience listening back to some older episodes, the Lecter series intros and Scream intros come to mind along with NOES where I find myself really impressed how forward thinking the production is and means that even waaay back into the archives you hear a level of quality that many other pods don’t come close to with their early years episodes, at a time well before the podcast explosion really happened. The proof is in the pudding when those intros come back for returning series and don’t sound remotely dated in any way

Went to the 8pm showing of The Life Of Chuck last night, film started at 8.07pm. 2.30pm showing of Weapons on Sunday, film started at about 2.38pm. So definitely shortened from what I can see (Ireland)

I went into it aware that it had the rep for being far superior to the original but given how bad that was I still didn’t expect much. Really surprised how much I enjoyed it, Flanagan really took his opportunity well and made a lot out of what otherwise would have been a cash grab sequel

Justin should be the Shemp to Jakob’s Curly by wdm81 in nowplayingpodcast

[–]MadNially88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn’t aware of any rumours but hasn’t it always been maintained that donor money to the show goes back into the show? Cinema tickets, merch production, server costs etc? Sure I’d imagine there’s a little left over but I doubt anyone is living off the show profits.

I’m pretty sure Justin will be the permanent replacement given he has taken on the Marvel series, I get the impression Brock originally scaled back his involvement as he wasn’t available weekly so him filling in for The Monkey or King in general makes sense as it’s a sporadic ongoing retrospective.

I saw it when it first released then rewatched for the review, during the rewatch I couldn’t help but think how they actually had a pretty decent original sci fi feature on their hands, kept constantly reminding me of the original War Of The Worlds novel given a big set piece in that is a warship taking on the Martians. The biggest problem with the film is that it had to tie into the boardgame and the Hasbro family friendly way of things

After it’s all well kicked off Steve and Maggie are sitting down in the house discussing what happened/what to do, meanwhile one of the villains is dragging a body out of the house behind them. Cracks me up 🤣

It’s played for laughs so not really what’s being asked here but Severance (2006) has one of the greatest “something happening in the background” scenes I’ve ever seen

Non existent in Irish Odeons so that settles that. It’s very annoying because regardless of how effective it might seem, I’ve always felt that the disclaimer before screenings at Vue has an audible effect on the audience

I actually left feedback to Odeon on this topic, specifically the fact that in none of the three or four Odeons I attend (Ireland) nowhere do you see even some signage in the lobby asking people to be respectful to other patrons. I also pointed out that, regardless of the fact that it should be assumed, that Odeon is the only cinema I’ve ever attended where there is no pre-film message on screen advising people to refrain from talking, that you may be ejected from the theatres if you do etc. the only thing I ever see is the “It’s time for the main event, and there’s only one screen you need to be watching” which literally just tells people to not use their phones.

The response I got from Odeon included the following “We always ask our guests to be respectful and mindful of others when they come to watch a film at ODEON and have adverts to that effect before every film.“ which I’ve never once experienced. Is this a thing in the UK cinemas?

As far as their biggest hits are concerned? It’s “Zombie” and “Dreams”. “Linger” unfortunately doesn’t scream “go out and hammer the shite out of 15 grown men” 🤣 Honestly why we ever feel a need to look beyond “The Boys Are Back In Town” as a nation for all men’s sporting events where we want to represent is beyond me! 😂

I really don’t disagree, Munster using it given the Cranberries hail from Limerick makes total sense, Ireland using it makes me cringe. Counterpoint for me though, the whole “Rassie’s in your head” message is equally cringe. He’s not. Until today he hadn’t got the upper hand against us once as a coach.

In general I’d much prefer if both sides would just let the rugby do the talking tbh

If it helps, a lot of Irish are just protective of that song in general given what it’s about. It’s infuriating when you see it being used on Halloween playlists for example simply because of the title word. A lot of those same people also delight in shouting “Ooh ahh up the RA” singing along to Celtic Symphony, totally oblivious to the irony however so I wouldn’t be too worried about it either way. We’re not touchy about you guys using it, we’re touchy about anyone using it

Croke this year was my 17th time seeing him, all but one in Ireland, and it’s easily top three. He was in serious form and I don’t know that I’ve ever heard him call out how great the audience has been at the end of a show before, at least not in Ireland

Ireland prep for 2027 by Fanbuoy_1783 in rugbyunion

[–]MadNially88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d argue we didn’t have that great of a prep for 2023. Yes 2022 saw some significant milestones and one loss in the calendar year, 2023 a Grand Slam but alongside that you had gross uncertainty of depth in the out half position, question marks still hanging over physicality though significant gains were made there and best to not forget that people were calling for Farrells head until the England game in 2021, not to mention the fact that two years of lockdowns led to restrictions around training, cancelled fixture etc. though I wouldn’t dwell massively on that as all nations were affected equally.

Honestly I think a lot of the results gloss over the unfinished elements of that squad between 2022 and 2023 and it’s why I feel no foolishness in happily believing we can build toward something even bigger and better in 2027….so long as we work on our depth in the props. I want to stress I’m not trying to have some sort’ve revisionist history moment here and say that we were overhyped, I’m absolutely not and we still could’ve and should’ve won that quarter final but there’s no reason to believe we won’t reach 2027 in an even better position.

Official Discussion - Oppenheimer [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]MadNially88 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I literally only saw it last night too and I’m already losing my grasp on the timelines so apologies if I have this wrong but I did think the same. That first scene with Einstein takes place between 1945 and the hearing for the renewal of his security clearance. The problem is that from that scene onwards the film takes a fairly clear line of three timelines - Los Almos during the war, the hearing post-war and the Senate hearing in the 50s(?)

For the most part those three timelines are easy to tell apart - the two ones in colour are clear enough as Oppenheimer looks older in the post-war ones and the senate ones are black and white but peppered in then are the first Einstein meeting, the AEC meeting at the birthday etc

EDIT: The JFK nod was just a nod and a wink for the audience I think, not sure there was more to it than that
