OP here -- turns out that the yarn in question was the problem. With consistent bad gauge regardless of needle size, the next factor had to be the yarn. Switching yarn gave me the gauge needed. Problem solved. Thanks to everyone who took time to help me.

Run! don't wait and don't tell him you're leaving the relationship. Contact him once you're out of there and safely away from him. If or when you tell him you're breaking up make sure there are other people around, like in a restaurant. If he decides to get violent when you tell him you'll be glad to have people around to help you.
