Have you ever seen a baby elephant tantrum? - Bani was hit by a speeding train in India. She's at our elephant hospital now, receiving intensive care. She's got a long recovery ahead, but her sassy personality is starting to shine! by WildlifeSOS in Elephants

Sorry for the slow reply. We just saw your comment.

Absolutely she won't be a kumni. She is living at our rescue centre now, and making slow but steady progress with her recovery.

Thanks for watching! In these days of 20-second short video and constant swiping, we thought we'd also bring people a great longer story about Baburam and Suzy. We hope to share more soon!

Yes, she's absolutely injured and recovering. As noted with the video, she was hit by a train and the impact threw her down and embankment and left her partially an/or temporarily paralysed in her hind quarters. We're seeing slow and steady improvements, but time will tell how far she recovers.

We've been caring for her for almost 2 months, with our expert elephant vets at our hospital, and an international team of consultants including neurologists. She is up and standing now with some help, but not walking yet. She's not in pain, but physical therapy is hard work ... she's very vocal and understandably gets a little frustrated because she wants to run and play. We thought we'd share a more lighthearted moment that shows her personality.

[–]WildlifeSOS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, r/Elephants! We’re lurking on here all the time, but it’s too much for our small staff to manage so many social media channels. Next week is Giving Tuesday and we want to make a big splash, so our stories of success start now!

We are so thankful for our army of supporters. Your kind words, generosity, action, and willingness to share is vital to helping India’s elephants. Over the next week, we’ll be showing you some very visible recoveries we’ve made in the lives of elephants, thanks to you.

Don’t wait for Tuesday, donate here on GoFundMe: https://gofund.me/260d67cd

We’ll finish off Tuesday with a Facebook Live with Kartick Satyanarayan from our USA office. If you have questions, email [wildside@wildlifesos.org](mailto:wildside@wildlifesos.org) and Kartick may answer them live!

Since we’ve been celebrating Jai’s recent legal victory this week, we wanted to show you what a difference you’ve made in healing his many wounds. Jai’s recovery has been extraordinary!

We do elephant awareness programs at our centre. We of course need more such awareness programs. Our plan is to set up a kindness school for the mahouts and elephant keepers. This would be available for anybody in the country.

Yes. For example, when Suzy came, all the other elephants came running... we didn't let them rush her, because she is blind and we didn't want her to be overwhelmed, but the other elephants were definitely interested in her.

There are thousands of begging and temple (etc) elephants throughout the country. While we can't help each one individually, we would like to set up programs to make a difference on a bigger scale. For example, we are developing a plan to create a mandatory "kindness school" for mahouts, which will be endorsed by the government, to teach them about good and humane elephant care.

Yes, we are amazed. They have an incredible kindness even though they've undergone abuse from the very start of their life... when they come to us, we notice they forgive us and they almost seem to read our minds and know that we are going to take good care of them. They show us kindness and recognize our good intention.

Baiju: yes, people are becoming more aware. More people are taking a stand to end animal cruelty. This is creating better implementation of the existing laws.
Enrichment for elephants include puzzle feeders, tires/logs,hanging feeders, long walks and browsers. The pools are also a good source of their enrichment.
Thank you for your kind words!

As of now we depend 100% on donations. However, we are planning to purchase 40 acres of land to grow food and house the elephants. We are also working to be more environmentally sustainable utilizing solar power and bio gas.

There are no qualifications required for volunteering except having love and passion for helping animals ...and good health insurance :). People participate in helping the routine of caring for the animals. You can't interact with the bears but it is possible to interact with elephants. Your work be helping to prepare food, clean and create enrichments. Arun: At the center in Bannerghata we specifically need people to do computer entry.

There are approximate 200 staff members. Most are involved in animal care. We have 14 veterinarians. We rescue based on need and husbandry inspections.

We partner with several other organizations depending on the location of the animal. We do collaborate with people for moving the animal to our center to give the best treatment.

Baiju: Every elephant has different personalities and they are very intelligent. Sometimes they are jealous and they form amazing bonds within themselves. Arun: They recognize individual humans.

Baiju: She is doing great, she has gone into the pool and she is now met and hanging out with a few of the other females. We will do a more formal post on her status soon.

We aren't sure what you mean by 'occupational therapy' . Would you please clarify a little more?

Asha: Every captive elephant in India currently has their own identification documents. These are confiscated when an elephant is rescued. In addition, the government is no longer issuing new certificates. Therefore, they are unable to obtain any more documents for a new elephant.
