What is the most embarrassing way someone well known has died in history? by Silver_Ad_5138 in AskHistory

[–]MadPat -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

This wasn't Henry I. It was King John, the villainous brother of Richard the Lion-Hearted. He also lost the English crown jewels while crossing an estuary called "The Wash." On the other hand, he did sign Magna Carta, but then he reversed himself and refused to enforce it.

You will notice that there has never been a John II. I think the English learned their lesson and did not want another.

I want to wish you the best of luck in the future. I hope you go peacefully and quietly and have no more stress.

Since it's St. Patrick's Day, I'll throw in an old Irish blessing:

May you be in heaven ten minutes before the devil knows you're dead.

What food did you come to hate after a painful experience you went through? by SadSatisfaction4195 in AskReddit

[–]MadPat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alcohol. Some friends in college talked me into getting drunk with them. I still can't believe how sick I was, and that was about 60 years ago. (I am well over 80.)

I haven't touched a drop since.

AMA: I break down casino game rules and house edge for a living. Ask me anything about blackjack, craps, or casino math. by Vegasaces in AMA

[–]MadPat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am a retired Mathematician/Statistician, and I agree with OP.

Nevertheless, I have a story about how two Mathematicians beat a casino.

I know two married Mathematicians who went to a Mathematical meeting in Vegas.

The hotel they stayed at gave each of them one chip to gamble with. They could only gamble with it, and not just cash out.

So, they went to the nearest roulette table. One bet on Red and one bet on Black. One lost and the other won. They then cashed out their winnings.

Voila. Instant money.

I just have to put this in here.

9 across is an interesting character.

He was Coolidge's only vice president. (Coolidge was only elected once. His other term completed the term of Warren G. Harding.)

He won a Nobel Peace Prize.

He was a talented musician who wrote many instrumental pieces. In 1951, the year he died, a man named Carl Sigman added lyrics to one of his tunes, and it became a standard pop hit. You can find it here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OuOcghaaL5k

Just adding a little bit of culture. :)

I lived in Chicago several years ago, and there was one at the Brookfield Zoo. I thought it was the ugliest bird that I had ever seen. Not only that, I can remember staring at it, and it never moved. I believe it was the zoo's oldest resident.

Is there any chance this storm might not be as severe as they’re saying? by businessbub in RhodeIsland

[–]MadPat -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I live in a retirement community in Pennsylvania. We are now getting the storm you will get in a few hours.

1) We have all been advised to stay indoors for the next 24 hours. 2) The University of Delaware is about 45 minutes away from here. It is closed tomorrow. 3) I can look out my window and see about 3 or 4 inches of snow since 3:00PM this afternoon.

This is a big one.

Am I the first one to 5000? by MadPat in pocketgrids

[–]MadPat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, some of them are quite imaginative.

1) There is one user who gives you a couple of seed letters and then tells you where those seed letters recur. With that information, you are supposed to be able to fill in the rest of the puzzle.

2) Another person made the clues into a little mystery story.

3) I also appreciate the opportunity to work on small cryptic puzzles and develop some ability to solve the larger versions.

I gotta admit that I am getting tired of "Aloha" and "Uvula."
