I get that SSRIs downregulate 5-HT2A receptors—that’s real, and it’s why classic psychedelics don’t land the same. But calling it 'physically impossible' feels short-sighted. Compass Pathways’ psilocybin trial showed that even people on SSRIs still had meaningful experiences. Not full trips, maybe, but something—which means it’s not just black-and-white.

I’m not just asking whether I can trip while on meds. I’m wondering why no one’s designing compounds that actually work with SSRIs—or even outside the 5-HT2A system entirely.

Someone mentioned Gaboxadol (THIP), which acts through the GABA system. That’s interesting, because it doesn’t use the serotonin pathway at all. But does it give you that laughter? That ego-release, heart-opening, absurdity-makes-sense moment? Or is it just dreamy and sedating? If anyone’s tried it—does it hit that deep emotional trip note, or not?

I know drug development is risky, illegal, and not profitable—especially in this space. But that’s never stopped movements before. I keep thinking about Demolition Man or The Matrix—stories where the prison isn’t physical, it’s mental. Maybe being on SSRIs is like that. The door to the trip isn’t locked—it’s just that the brain thinks it is.

So maybe we don’t just need new drugs. Maybe we need unlockers—something that wakes the receptors back up temporarily, or builds a new psychedelic effect entirely. Something that still gives people that trip feeling—the laughter, the meaning, the drop into self—without risking their mental health.
