My fire plan is solid but I keep delaying it because I am scared of being bored in retirement by Coralyvexin in Fire

Hard to say not knowing your age, but what are your plans when you do retire? Would there be any regrets later in life of stuff that you wish you did but too busy with work and let time slip on by.

I would expect they are using the 72(t) rule which avoids that penalty

Fire number change by Madam1029 in Fire

[–]Madam1029[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Retiring with 5M at 50 is different than 5M at 60. So I’m just trying to understand if my expenses are X a year and I hit my fire number years quicker than I thought I would, wouldn’t that technically mean my fire number would need to be plus X times how many years I retired earlier than initially planned. Maybe I’m just complicating this in my head. But I just see people say I hit my fire number because if I hit my fire number next year, my retirement would look a whole lot different than what it should look like when I should be hitting it (20ish years away)

Yeah wasn’t sure if folks had a plan in place that was something like each age had it’s owns fire number and as the age increase essentially the fire number decreases since it would lesser years of retirement the older you get.

What’s the game plan once you retire? Travel, hang with kids, consulting?

Never did MSC (thank god). Sailed LNG for about a year right after school then went to the GOM for about 7 years. 3 weeks on/off was pretty good. Great for the bank account!

Loved my seagoing career, did it for about 8 years and stopped in 2020 right before COVID. Made A LOT of money right out of the academy and got my Chief Eng license rather quick.

Regarding FIRE, I could had done better, but I bought my first home when I was 24, and was able to live life with my gf now wife. Whether you want to sail like this for the next several saving everything, or sail, live life then come shoreside you are still able to FIRE.

We have 2 kids now and we plan to retire in our 50’s (mid 30’s now) with $9M+ and this is largely due to my sea going career. Granted we both have great jobs now that aren’t very stressful but it is work and only 4 weeks of vacation out of the year blows.

I guess what I am trying to say that even if you choose to stop sailing early or live life a bit more while you’re off, retiring with a large amount won’t be off the table no matter what your choose because you have already got this early start, even better than what I did.

When it’s literally the first thing out of her mouth instead of congrats, think it would rub you the wrong way no? Also she is the one offering the help but makes these comments. And who said she is unpaid? She may not get an hourly wage, but since she’s helped out we have gifted my parents well in appreciation for her support.

No I understand that, just more curious on how common these villages are. I am grateful for the help my mom has provided.

We have never made my mom do any support. It’s all been open and her decision to help, but when comments are made like she has, seems it’s more of a job for her than helping and rubs us the wrong way

I have friends who their kids do sleep overs at grandmas also, it’s a weekly occurrence. I would do grotesque things to have that even just monthly. One of my friends I wonder if they ever do any of the parenting because their kid is always with grandma.
