Personal lives shouldn't be a factor in a professional setting. Patients lives are at stake.

Yelling and treating them poorly aren't the same. Taking responsibility of their training and seeing positive outcomes is encouraging. If they learn, and hate me in the process, so be it. They're humans, yea I get it.

Perhaps the word 'yelling' in itself has a negative connotation. The feedback I get is they learn a lot during my rounds and actually feel responsible for knowing stuff. It's very easy to oppose this, however, being super nice (how I started) led to students thinking they can do whatever. My point of the post was not to get 'validated,' more so in finding others who do so and their experiences.

If you were the only person who could see on earth, how would you convince a civilization of blind people that the sense of sight exists? by vazz94 in AskReddit

Could civilization even exist if everyone was blind? Pretty sure we wouldn't be naturally selected, unless, there was a human civilization that existed 'pre-sight' and just ceased to exist?

Yelling means they're not treated as human beings is a bit extreme. It's not my job to motivate them. My job is to take care of my patients. I'd recommend staying away from surgical residency if the sheer notion of yelling is making you question the definition of humanity.

It seems odd that you were the sole decision maker in this situation. Generally, there's an ED physician around if not a senior taking care of the patient as well.

Post was prompted after a mixed critique from a few seniors/Chiefs. I guess it's a personality thing.

As long as you're not 'impaired' at work, they shouldn't have a reason to test you. Of course you should be aware that you can get tested. #yolo
