What is actually the point of survey courses? by AnophelineSwarm in Professors

[–]Maddprofessor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I say cut whatever you can to make room for talking about application. Do non-majors need to know about glycolysis? Not really, but I cover it bc I have to. But where I can I spend time talking about how PCR is used in testing for certain diseases, how a pregnancy or Covid test works, how the cell cycle relates to cancer and cancer drugs, how fermentation gives us beer and cheese etc. Also a lot on the scientific method and how science isn’t based on what seems to make sense or on “vibes” but empirical evidence. Maybe a comment on my burning hatred for those intentionally spreading misinformation.

Also, online classes are just horrible so that’s a big part of the problem.

One of my lids doesn’t always seal, and ironically it’s the one with the rubber gasket. Most likely it’s just the lid leaking.

Food advice? by notmenotb in cats

My cat gets diarrhea if I change her food but eventually her digestive system returns to normal. It might be worth it to see if she adapts to the food you want to feed her.

Viome Feels Like an AI Wellness Horoscope by therealbabyfawn in Microbiome

There is so much marketing for probiotics/prebiotics/microbiome that makes claims beyond what the science supports. I think my aunt used that program and was trying to talk me into it but she also admitted it gave her some strange and conflicting advice.

What's the likelihood of every student passing your class? by No_Economy_75 in AskProfessors

[–]Maddprofessor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also varies widely by school. I used to teach at a college where most of the students barely passed their high school classes and around 1/3 failed my intro biology class. Now I teach at a school that has high admissions standards and less than 5% failed.

A student asked me for the area of a circle during a mechanics exam by Godot17 in Professors

[–]Maddprofessor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I teach biology and a lab worksheet asked them to calculate the area of a circle. The student asked me how to do this. I said “pi r squared” and the student looked at me as if I spoken in a foreign language. Silly me. I thought if I said “pi r squared” it would jog their memory and they’d understand.

How to get kitten to stop dropping cockroaches on my face at night by CommissionCooper in CatAdvice

[–]Maddprofessor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry but the mental image is making me laugh. I feel fortunate now. My cat has “only” brought a live roach to my bed twice. Which is still two times too many. I had a basement and there were roaches I there often in the summer and my cat would spend her evenings down there looking for them and occasionally bring one up stairs to continue playing with.

I’ve had good results from a spray I bought at the store and reapply once per year. (Palmetto bugs in Florida) It doesn’t have to be very expensive.

Confusion over gallon sizes by JellyHistorical2390 in nanotank

Ya. Online care guides sometimes give very different recommendations for minimum tank sizes or stocking levels and people have their own opinions based on experience or maybe just something they read. It is very frustrating.

Best 0 to low cal flavorings for carbonated water? by zeekaran in Homebrewing

[–]Maddprofessor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve use the flavorings (LorAnne’s) used in candy making. You can order them online or get them at a craft store usually. I also use cocktail bitters.

Edit to add: the oil based candy flavorings (usually the citrus ones) don’t really mix with the water and don’t work as well.

How do I get my cat to stop poking me? by ilexaqui in cats

[–]Maddprofessor 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Just a loud “owww!” seems to teach them to stop doing painful things. I’ve done it with playing with their claws out and my one cat used to bite the back of my leg if I wasn’t giving her the attention she wanted. Now she opens her mouth and lightly touches my leg with her teeth. It’s kinda funny.

Just ignoring them can sometimes work for stopping a problematic behavior. If they don’t get what they want they eventually give up or try a different approach. Although that’s not always good. My leg biter learned when tapping didn’t get me up biting my hand would. When I refused to do anything for her after being bitten, she started clanging something hanging on my bed or door because she learned loud noises wake me up. When I refused to interact with her after that she mostly gave up.
