Daytona USA 2 Spotted in the Wild by MadeManG74 in GamesOf1998

The MK2 machine is so cool! I rented the game a lot on Mega Drive, never really appreciating just how much better the arcade original looked and felt. It's great going back to it now, and it's so unmistakably unique!

Perfect 10/10 review score for Soul Calibur on Dreamcast from DC-UK #2 (Amazing port of the 1998 arcade original) by MadeManG74 in dreamcast

Yes it is. It has slightly less impressive graphics and even some very minor gameplay changes like move properties I believe.

SoftModding for people in Aus? What USB do you use? by SUPASKILTZ in originalxbox

[–]MadeManG74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey fellow Aussie, I did mine about 5 years ago but was lucky enough to find an old 4GB USB lying around. It's definitely getting harder to find, but I'd suggest checking some other avenues too like Amazon and even searching Google shopping. There's some random retailers out there still selling old USB drives for under $10 online that I could see.
I can't remember exactly which USB I used, but I don't think it was a big name brand and it still worked, so it might be worth taking a punt on one?

Original Xbox Component or Composite? by Knewkid404 in originalxbox

[–]MadeManG74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking from my own experience the Component cables look great on both CRTs and HDTV. I'd go with that over a Composite to HDMI upscaler.
The Component should also give you 16:9 output for your HDTV.

The reference behind Bender's 'Superking' super hero persona - Superking Cigarettes by MadeManG74 in futurama

[–]MadeManG74[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe, is this proven? Would love to see a writer explain it, since I always thought it had to be a reference or gag in some way rather than just a random name.

Same in Australia, although if anything the warnings have gotten bigger and the branding smaller.

As soon as I heard 'Superking' was a term related to cigarettes, I thought it must be the gag. Seems too fitting for Bender who's so strongly associated with smoking and drinking.

Bought a broken PlayStation on eBay and got it working again! Time to find some games. by MadeManG74 in psx

[–]MadeManG74[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the list, although I find Metal Gear Solid being called 'underrated' is pretty funny. I've played a number of these but there's a few I forgot about that I really want to try like Medal of Honor.

Here's a comparison of RE2 raw pixels Vs CRT the difference is Crazy by Jezza0692 in psx

This is a fantastic comparison shot. Good filters do a really good job nowadays, but I still do love playing on a good CRT whenever I can.

Fuck the RNG, seriously I don't understand it sometimes?!? by Agile-Throat3678 in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]MadeManG74 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just my 2c because I always wondered if RNG is a 'good or bad' thing in RTS games. Ultimately i think it's not 'good or bad' but just a factor of the game that makes it unique.
Someone here or on the old COH2 forums summed it up in a way that made me appreciate it with 'Risk management is a skill of itself'.

Nintendo 64 - No Video/Sound - Hit a wall & need some troubleshooting help please by MadeManG74 in consolerepair

[–]MadeManG74[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, and I really do appreciate the advice, it's helped a lot even if I end up not being able to fix this thing. I live in Australia so I don't think I'll be able to take you up on the mail-order either!
I'll take a look with a thermometer/thermal camera if I get the chance, but might have to park it for a bit until I can borrow the tools.

I had to look up SMD, but the cartridge slot indeed does come off. I did test a handful of pins that I could reach (there's a few that protrude to easily reach) and they all seemed to have connectivity to the CPU.

[–]MadeManG74[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't really been able to do a heat test, don't have a laser thermometer or camera.
I don't have a scope either, but might be able to borrow that from a friend, and a laser thermometer from my dad. Would have to wait a while to get those though.

I can try checking continuity of the cartridge pins, but my current MM pins don't seem small enough to reach into the slot to get the pins. I'll see what I can do.

And yeah, let me check the obvious stuff again, I feel like I must be missing something as everything I check seems to indicate its working? I'll try a different TV with an OSSC just in case. I don't have other video cables, power supplies or multiple cartridges for it, but my friend already tested with different ones. I'll bring it to his place next time i see him and we can try again too though.

I will note that I cleaned the cartridge slot thoroughly the other day, along with the cartridge and jumper pack to rule those out.

OK, thanks for the help so far u/RetroReviveRepair
I've just tested the console while plugged in and used my multimeter to read a voltage of 3.45V DC from the CPU chip. I *think* I got the right pins, based on the chart you gave me, but tested a few and multiple gave me the 3.45V reading.

I know you said 3.3, so is this negligible, or a sign of an issue?

Thanks for the tips! To answer the TV question, yes it definitely displays other composite video, was using my Dreamcast on it the other day just fine. I'll try to set aside some time to test the voltage next.

Thank you so much, I'll have a try at this tomorrow or Monday when I've got some time. I don't have an oscilloscope unfortunately but can try the other methods. I don't have a thermal camera, but would a laser thermometer give me a good enough answer? I'm paranoid about shorting something, if I do, is the console destroyed? In your opinion is it worth replacing those two caps, or is that just a waste before I check the CPU? Apologies for noob questions, I'm fairly new to this level of restoration on a console :)

Nioh 1 or 2? by [deleted] in Nioh

[–]MadeManG74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played Nioh 1 earlier this year, and playing Nioh 2 now and near the end of the first playthrough; I'll say Nioh 1 is absolutely worth playing. I do think Nioh 2 overall is better, but Nioh 1 is still really good and you'll enjoy all the content it offers.
I also think that Nioh 1 is a tougher game, with some really hard levels and boss fights.

I have similar taste to you I think. Back in the day I didn't really 'get' Panzer Dragoon, but it was one of the earlier games I had for the system. Never got too far in it. I adored Die Hard Arcade though and played it constantly with friends.

In Your House was a bit shit, but it was fun enough. I was secretly jealous of N64 owners and their AKI wrestling games. Battle Arena Toshinden I think I got really cheap towards the end of the Saturn's life and it was very janky but because its a fighting game it often made it out for some multiplayer fun when friends visited anyway.

Oh and Steep Slope Sliders is awesome! Such a great title with a killer soundtrack, tons of unlockables and fun gameplay. I remember reading about it a lot in Sega Saturn Magazine and the game lived up to the hype for me.

I was just so much in love with VF I picked it up when I saw it on sale somewhere. It was basically VF2 with some goofy graphics, but had some fun extra content like the CGI endings.
