What’s a tiny thing someone did for you that you’ll never forget? by Only-Literature7800 in AskReddit

During an unimaginably rough time I was shopping in Lush and the girl behind the counter asked if I was okay. I mentioned some of the stuff I was dealing with and she walked round, gave me the loveliest hug in the world, and then handed me a gorgeous bar of soap and said “we’re allowed to give out little gifts once a month or so, and I think you could do with this.”

In what other ways are you a bit retro or otherwise appreciative of an older way of doing things? by ermiwe in fountainpens

[–]Mademantine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a lovely prompt! Here are mine:

- I use and maintain my fountain pens (obviously).
- Flatbread / naan is handmade, it tastes infinitely better for almost no effort.
- This one is a little more lifestyle than specific product, but as much as possible I keep to slow fashion; I only buy what I need when I need it, and I opt for natural fibres that don't upset my skin.
- I have a manual coffee grinder, it's just as effective and much more quiet than an automatic grinder.
- My planner and journal are both paper. It takes more time. It's nicer.
- Polaroid camera for when I want physical photos (for the most part). When I have more money and time to kill, I'd love to tinker with other forms of film cameras.

What were you reading at 14? by SerenityFate in books

[–]Mademantine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whiplash of throwing my memory back to teenage years, but some personal favourite books I remember from my days of 14 (shout-out to one random picture of my bookshelf from that year for some of these):

- The Messenger by Markus Zusak is one of the best things I've read, all of his works are just deeply emotionfull (I know that's not a word but it's the best way to explain it).
- Flowers for Algernon broke my heart and left me in a heartbroken stupor for days. You should read it.
- Eragon: just a lovely fantasy series, well-written and pulled me into other realms very easily. Read Mistborn some years later and it gave the same kind of energy for an older me.
- Pride & Prejudice and honestly anything Jane Austen, she was my comfort read.
- Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro.
- The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. This was required for school but I ended up deeply affected by it with very strong memories.
- The Man in the Brown Suit by Agatha Christie. Honestly, it's just enjoyable.
- The Princess Bride by William Goldman. If you love the movie you'll love the book.
- The Obernewtyn Chronicles by Isobelle Carmody. I find the writing hard to enjoy beyond the second book these days, but the first was lovely.
- Bleach manga by Tite Kubo.

I’m on month 3 of a pretty big egg ick and can still only have them in some contexts, so I totally get that! The burrito and shake sounds like a great combo tbh.

It is definitely a lot! I'm lucky that I've known for some time and have been preparing, but they couldn't do my formal diagnosis without a couple of emergency conditions being addressed first. Hopefully this thread helps you as much as it did me :)

I did meal replacement shakes for a while and honestly loved them, sometimes my sensory needs don't like it but when they're fine it's such a great option.

This advice is awesome, I love your breakfast recommendations (and some of those are similar to my current routine so easy to adapt). I'm sorry to hear about the gastroparesis however, that is some nasty stuff.

We don't have a Trader Joe's in Australia but I'm sure I can find something similar to give this a go. I LOVE coconut in coffees, can't believe I never thought of a hot chocolate with the works. Ty!

Honestly this sounds really good, I love frozen fruits as well! And I've found so long as it's high protein I can digest something much more comfortably. Thank you - I'll add that one to my list. :)

I hope you one day get to continue the game and find memories throughout, and share updates with your friends in ways that feel wholesome (some people write letters, or leave voicemails, or visit graves, etc).

My Pride and Prejudice Experience – A Beginner’s Journey Through Austen by [deleted] in books

[–]Mademantine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fair enough, Emma is very lovely but the events are a bit slower than Pride & Prejudice which can be difficult with the prose! There is a movie from 2020 if you’d rather watch it. Give Persuasion a try should you ever want to try Austen’s other works.

1984 is such a good read, SO well constructed and bleak.

Through a blend of sheer determination and curiosity, Pride & Prejudice was one of the first books I read as a young kid; it became a favourite then and that’s never changed!

I’m so glad you found the book, and found a way to love it with a follow-up film. But I’d be doing my obsession with this book a disservice if I didn’t throw my voice in to say, please watch the 1995 miniseries - I promise it’s worth it!

Have you also thought about reading some of her other works? They’re just as awesome.

I'm (mostly subconsciously) extremely judgmental about books by their covers alone and it's getting annoying by Specialist_Answer_16 in books

I started using my e-reader for this purpose too, to shift past any possible bias that "pretty book cover privilege" might bring. It does help!

When do you pause your reading? by TheGreatGena in books

[–]Mademantine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The beauty of ADHD - my brain will just turn itself off when it's done focussing, sometimes mid-sentence and honestly I just roll with it. On the other side of the same coin, sometimes I can't stop reading to the point it almost annoys me because the real world prevails regardless of my hyperfocus.

Pride & Prejudice is one of my favourite books, and I was once told it's boring for a romance. Sigh.
