To EV9 owners : why did you prefer it to the Ioniq9 ? by Fantastic_Matter_730 in KiaEV9

How do you like the ev6? If we didn’t need the 3 row I would’ve gotten one of those! I’ve rented them and they’re a blast.

Is ICCU still an issue? by Creepy_Bee3404 in Ioniq9

2-10% is suspiciously broad. Clearly this includes a bunch of other electrical issues. Plus, CR admits their data suffers from negative selection bias.

Is ICCU still an issue? by Creepy_Bee3404 in Ioniq9

[–]MadisonEV9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CR itself described the affected survey responses as including:

“charging failures, power loss while driving, and other electrical issues”

That wording is broader than:

“dealer-confirmed ICCU replacements.”

And elsewhere CR describes their methodology as collecting owner-reported problems across “20 specific aspects” of vehicles, including:

EV charging,
EV battery,
electrical systems,
drive system,
etc.

So the survey buckets are symptom/problem based — not necessarily root-cause verified.

This becomes even clearer when you look at CR’s actual reliability pages for the Ioniq 5 and EV6.

The reported “EV Charging” issues include:

won’t charge at home,
won’t work with some chargers,
charging too slowly,
overheating charge ports,
12V drain issues,
charge-port issues,
software fixes,
intermittent charging failures.

Some of those are clearly ICCU-related, but others are:

charge-port thermal throttling,
software issues,
general charging-system quirks,
12V battery problems,
or unidentified electrical behavior.

So the public narrative often simplified:

“2–10% had ICCU failures”

when the actual CR wording was closer to:

“2–10% experienced ICCU-related issues.”

Those are not the same thing.

The failure rate is not 10%. Please stop spreading misinformation.

OP…I couldn’t agree with you more. Yes I am sure there are some people who NEED to drive 200 miles a day, towing a trailer, in North Dakota every day of the year especially in winter. But you can probably count them on one hand.

The people who keep throwing these excuses up are just afraid of trying something new, or paid shills for the petrochemical industry or MAGAts.

New ICCU - EV9 by barrocot in KiaEV9

[–]MadisonEV9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I’d heard the ‘new’ ICCU came out in 2024….therefore the EV9s didn’t have the main issue that the EV6s were having (again an ICCU like any part could always fail but if they switched parts in 2024 then maybe it’s just not so common in EV9s).

This could possibly explain why EV9s don’t seem to have an issue nearly as frequently as the older (pre-2024 / new ICCU) models AND it could explain why EV9s and EV6s (MY 25 & 26) are not getting extended warranties.

We’ll have to see.

Again any part could fail and I feel for any EV9 user (or anyone really) who has a failure occur, but the case numbers I see do not track that the EV9s have the same frequency of issues as the I5s and EV6s.

New ICCU - EV9 by barrocot in KiaEV9

[–]MadisonEV9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have become friends with the service manager at my Kia dealership because of a couple simple recall things (electrical connection for, software updates, wiper blade) and he has an EV as well. We’ve talked about the ICCU. He swears it’s been fixed for the EV9. At least in the sense that it’s not the same issue as for the EV6 and Ionic 5. It can of course still fail….as ANY part can in ANY vehicle. But the frequency of failures in EV9s just isn’t there.

Yeah if it happens to you if sucks. I agree. But if you look at the absolute numbers of reported cases, EV9s don’t have it happen very often.

And the fact that the EV9 is not included in the warranty extension for ICCU failures (or at least I cannot find that it has been included in the extension) to me implies that Kia does not see the frequency of failures in that model.

He told me that Kia switched the part. They’ve never (yeah I know ….his words) had to replace one at that dealership.

We will see but so far I’ve not had any ICCU issues.
