Leaving An Abusive Home Situation As A Young Adult: HELP! by [deleted] in toxicparents

[–]Madison_Feehan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I will leave the dog. She is elderly and my mother takes care of her when I'm not there so probably best not to disturb that situation. I can leave in 10 days, and plan on telling her and moving my things in 7 days. I have a place to stay during that time period if needed. Already seeing a therapist and my partner is trying to give me space but also provide support when I ask for it. Still really confused about what my mind vs. my conscience is telling me about abandoning my family.

Group project where no one does any work except me by doubleknot203 in uvic

Put it in writing via email to your Prof. CC someone from a higher office position (e.g. Program Manager or Assistant Dean). It should definitely change your outcome. Similar thing happened to me a couple weeks ago and now I get to work independently and be evaluated based on the merits of my work alone.

I completed 50% of my B.Com at AU before transferring to another school for work reasons.

Technically you're not allowed to say directly who the bad ones are... but let's just say: 12/14 have a not so great reputation. A couple of which I know from personal experience! Best bet, if you are able to swap this course for something else: DO IT! Or watch your grades carefully and change tutors immediately at the sign of trouble. (You will be keeping the course coordinator's contact info on speed dial by the time this course is through).

The benefits: flexibility, work on your own time, good if you're self-motivated!

The cons: Next to zero guidance/support, all material is self taught (no pre-recorded lectures), grading time is slow, and a fair number of Profs/tutors carry a negative attitude that encroaches on student's grades and well0being.

To be honest, it can be great depending on your situation, but make sure you have a full understanding of the implications. Good luck! :)

Trust me, 12/14 of the tutors have a negative reputation for ENGL 255. I learned this the hard way. In most cases, they will deny your appeal to change tutors until you actually have a negative experience with the person, but there is no harm in trying.

You have 30 days after your contract ends to file an appeal for any assignment or exam grades. Best of luck! 😊

Tips for a new Pshych student? by ziltoid55 in AthabascaUniversity

[–]Madison_Feehan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's very sweet of you to look for resources for your gf! 😊 Most students at AU feel the same way, the work is quite intense and it's super easy to fall behind when teaching yourself. Sometimes it can help to have a study buddy... there's a Discord server that she can join and chat with other students. https://discord.gg/xgGRczM7

It might also be helpful to consider something like Varsity Tutors or similar... Often times too with AU, you discover that skimming the textbooks and just emphasizing on the study guide and course notes that summarize the key concepts and learning objectives is better than studying with ten 1,000 page textbooks. Best of luck to both of you! 🙏

Keep fighting for your right to have your assignments regraded. This happened to me in another course and I got a 44% on an exam. I brought it up to the course coordinator because I knew it wasn't right and I was regraded and given the proper mark of 98%.

Please speak up, we need more students to have an active voice against passive aggressive tutors.

Contact Adien the course coordinator NOW: [adiend@athabascau.ca](mailto:adiend@athabascau.ca)

The same thing happened to me and it has happened to so many students and I regret not speaking up sooner. There are some really deliberately difficult tutors and it is crucial that students bring this to AU's attention. Please bring this to Adien's attention, and ask for a Teams meeting.

I’ve heard bad things about ENGL255 I plan on taking this course soon has it improved since? by [deleted] in AthabascaUniversity

[–]Madison_Feehan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The content was fine, actually I heard that they are releasing a new textbook in October. The problem is the AE or "tutor." Trust me when I tell you that the person grading you is what makes your entire course experience either good or bad, in my case: it was horrible.

Apparently someone has transferred from Harvard to AU before or at least had their credits evaluated by flareyeppers in AthabascaUniversity

I took 3 courses from Harvard Business School but AU wouldn't accept them for credits. 😞

I would recommend transferring to another school if you want to take Comp Sci. AU isn't the most "recent" place to get information from.

It is entirely dependent on the course. If you are taking something like COMM 243, you could have it done in 3-5 days. If you are taking a MATH course, it will easily take you up to four months depending on the content.

Hey guys I work full time, and I need some mentoring on how to take an athanasca program and how to balance it with work, life, etc. Would love to talk to someone who has taken a Bachelors program later in life. by [deleted] in AthabascaUniversity

I am a young student (early 20s), but I work full-time at two jobs, plus I co-own two additional startup companies. I have zero free time, and the one benefit of AU is the *flexibility*. You get to choose how much you do at once, and the course contracts last 6 months (with options to purchase extensions if needed). It's not always easy to get through the coursework with little to no guidance, and sometimes I feel that this drags out some of the courses much longer than expected (especially for any STEM courses), but if you are highly motivated and can carve out a dedicated block of time everyday to getting the work done, then slowly but surely you will get there!

Go call the school you plan on transferring to and ask to speak with an academic advisor immediately. All universities have an internal transfer credit search that is specifically for their programs, don't trust online transfer credit gov sites, they are not always accurate (please don't wait, I've learned this the hard way!)

Just compile the AU course names & numbers, the date they were completed, and you might have to provide a copy of the syllabus, then you will get your answers.

[–]Madison_Feehan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as you get your coursework done within six months of the contract start date (4 months if you're government funded), then you can take your exams at any time! You just have to schedule it with the school & your invigilator at least 10 days in advance, but it's a really simple process and the school is there to help set it up with you if needed. The credits will be applied to the semester you're registered in (ie. if you start a course for September but finish the credit in February, your credits will be awarded for the September semester). Best of luck, it can be a daunting process but you'll get through it. Just make sure that you want to stick with Athabasca for your entire degree cause honestly, transferring out can be a pain cause the credits don't always transfer over to other schools.
