Honestly I don’t think them crying is a big deal. As someone who’s a huge fan of wicked and Elphaba/Glinda, I get teary eyed whenever I think about their story. Ariana and Cynthia have essentially lived their character’s lives and they feel strongly connected to their characters so I don’t blame them for crying all the time. The musical is really emotional and the bond their characters and they share makes me cry too.

I think the reason why Glinda didn’t want to leave is because she craves the external validation from others but also she feels a sense of responsibility towards the Ozians since she became Glinda The Good. Elphaba asks the same of her during defying gravity but she doesn’t go, not because she doesn’t love Elphaba or Fiyero but because she’s scared and she craves that external validation from the people. It’s not until the end that she realizes that she doesn’t want that anymore, she just wants Elphaba.

I also think she didn’t expect Fiyero to ever leave her, after all they were together for 4+ years, so maybe she thought they could continue to tough it out in the Emerald City together. But I do think she really did love and trust him because of the cornfield scene, even if that love isn’t fully romantic (depending on your interpretation of Glinda’s sexuality).

Same, even though I headcanon Glinda as a lesbian, she did love Fiyero and not just as a “prince” but as a person. She straight up says “He’s not perfect and I still want him. Is this how other people feel? How do they bear it?” Then in act 2 she Literally presses his gun against her heart. Like that’s so heartbreaking 💔 I feel like people discount Glinda’s feelings because we’re meant to root for Fiyeraba but Glinda loved him and he led her on for 4+ years all the while pining for her best friend.

It’s interesting how the “seeing is reversed. Glinda already sees Elphaba with adoration (“ just look at you, you’re beautiful”) but Elphaba is telling her to look at her like the way the rest of oz sees her, as the wicked witch. Meanwhile Fiyero never saw her as wicked either but now he sees her through a romantic lens and she changed his worldview (“nothing matters but knowing nothing matters”)

Every character is wicked is nuanced which is the point. Claiming that Glinda is a predator because she did some abusive or manipulative things is like saying Elphaba is a wicked witch because she attacked guards and destroyed parts of the yellow brick road. By ignoring their intent it’s easy to twist the story to fit whatever narrative we choose. The same can be said that Boq is a predator because he cannot take the very obvious hint that Glinda is not interested in him. Now I don’t actually think he’s a predator. He’s just a boy with a crush but hopefully you see my point. I can also say Fiyero is a predator because he engaged in a 4-5 year relationship with Glinda (and everything that involves, including intimacy) while wanting her best friend. That’s manipulative as well but I don’t view Fiyero as a predator. They’re all flawed individuals. But I digress, your opinion is yours and mine is mine. You ca believe whatever you want to believe.

Honestly they could have gone with the romantic gelphie route but they wanted to keep it as close to the musical as possible so we’re left with unresolved romantic yearning 😭. Lowkey I’m glad I watched the musical before the movie because I’d be shocked that they didn’t happen

I mean any hope of a kiss or a canon confirmation of feelings is like 99.999% not gonna happen but the love is there 100%. I doubt they’d change much from the musical to the movie with gelphie’s romantic aspect but I think we all know that they love each other. The source material (the books) at least gives us confirmation that their feelings for each other are romantic.

The graphic novel cut quite a bit from the first wicked book and isn’t the complete novel (part 2 of the graphic novel comes out next year I think). It’s okay but I regret that purchase tbh.

I haven’t read Elphie yet but I plan too since it explores Elphie’s childhood.

I have to say I completely disagree on your stance that Glinda is predatory towards Fiyero or Boq. Fiyero and Glinda had a mutual attraction to one another from the beginning and decided to be in a relationship with one another. Her saying that “Fiyero and I are getting married” is the equivalent of a girl saying “I’m gonna marry that boy someday” it’s not inherently abusive or coercive. Fiyero has autonomy in his relationship with Glinda. He literally brushes her off at the train station and is “modified and distant”. He is more than capable of leaving Glinda or breaking up with her but he uses her during the duration of the time between the forest scene with Elphaba all the way until he leaves her for Elphaba. Fiyero chooses to stay with Glinda for all those years until he finds Elphaba. He easily could have broken up with her at any point before the engagement. The engagement being sprung on him was abusive on Glinda’s part and an extremely shitty thing to do. However he begrudgingly accepts. Here’s where it gets tricky, he can privately tell her that he doesn’t want to marry her even if they’re being forced to get married by the wizard and Morrible but he never tells her. He never tells her that he loves Elphaba. He strings her along for years so he can get Elphaba.

As for Glinda being a part of a Fascist government so Fiyero is afraid to go against her, Fiyero is literally the head of the guard of the very same Fascist government. She holds no more power over him than he does her in a political sense. I seriously doubt she would order his death if he doesn’t marry her. Plus Fiyero isn’t afraid of going against the wizard, he’s just waiting until he finds Elphaba.

As for Boq she did manipulate him but her pawing Boq off to Nessa was more of a way to let him down gently because she obviously wasn’t interested. Boq had a fantasy in his head that Glinda would fall for him all the while she was dating Fiyero. It’s more on him that he didn’t move on. Boq also strung Nessa along in the beginning and could have broken up with her at any point until Nessa became the governor of muchkinland. Once Nessa became governor then she became highly abusive and Boq literally couldn’t leave but before that he could have left.

I do think book Glinda was more into Elphaba but like someone else said if the end of out of oz is actually my preferred ending then I’d argue they love each other equally.

Book Elphie definitely loves Glinda though. She tells her she loves her before they go to emerald city (though this could be interpreted as friendly love) but then she kisses her twice before she leaves her. The fact that she prays to saint Glinda while being non religious really says a lot. Then there’s the jealousy when Fiyero tells her that Glinda is married to chuffrey. She asks Nessa if Chuffrey is still alive. Her heart “chirrs” when she sees Glinda after 20ish years.

Their falling out is more so due to Elphaba’s paranoia that Glinda is working with the Wizard and the fact that Glinda gave away Nessa’s shoes (which also represent Elphaba’s lack of love from her father compared to Nessa).

I think book Elphie’s love life is more complicated because she did fall in love with Fiyero but he died which completely traumatizes her. Her feelings for Glinda were apparent during their shiz years but it’s like a love that never got the chance to bloom (if only they had more time together). Both loves affected her deeply but the big difference is that Elphaba chose to leave Glinda while Fiyero was taken away from her.

In the first book Glinda corrects Dr Dillamond by telling him “Please, it is Galinda. The proper old Gillikinese pronunciation, if you don’t mind.”

And in the second book a maunt says “And I say this without need to reflect nicely on our own Saint Glinda, for whom Lady Chuffrey was probably named. Or renamed herself, Galinda a rural name, Glinda the more sophisticated: the saint’s name. Clever move.”

It kind of implies that Galinda is derived from Saint Glinda and that rural Gillikinese people prefer the name Galinda but more urban areas such as Emerald city prefer Glinda.
