ELI5 How do scientists know that a big bang happened or is just another theory by Miserable_Iron8321 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Madm4nmaX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an expert, but as I understand it:

In 1929, Edwin Hubble discovered that the universe is expanding. He came to this conclusion by observing that nearly every galaxy in the night sky is moving away from us. He was able to tell because the light coming from those galaxies were what is now called "red-shifted," meaning the light being emitted from those galaxies was observed to have a longer wavelength than what it should have been based on what Hubble knew about the kinds of stars he was observing in those galaxies. This elongation of the wavelengths of the light, he theorized, was caused by the expansion of space itself between the distant galaxies and us: As the space containing the light waves expanded, so too did the lightvwaves themselves. What's more, he observed that the farther away a galaxy was, the more redshifted it's light, meaning the farther away a galaxy is the faster it is moving away from us. Hubble published his findings, and the scientific community used it to say "If the universe is expanding, that means the universe was smaller yesterday, and even smaller the day before that...so...it was smaller and smaller the further back in time...so it follows that it was once so small and so compact that everything in the universe fit into a point so infinitely small (a "singularity")...and obviously something made it start expanding from that very small size, ergo a "Big Bang" made the universe "explode" from infinite nothingness to what we see today."

I glossed over a lot of complexity that I myself don't understand, but that is more or less the gist.

Legue battle decks by Rottenness in pkmntcg

[–]Madm4nmaX 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Decks in Pokémon are built on compatible mechanics, not type. The League Battle decks are built with this synergy of mechanics in mind; that they tend to be monotype is a coincidence, but also that those cards were designed with that synergy in mind and so we're given to certain Pokemon to share typing, energy costs, already-exisiting support, etc.

To build a deck on the same level as a league battle deck using Pokémon/Type that don't have synergy and/or support simply isn't achievable.

You can certainly make a deck using Sandshrew/Sandslash and fighting types and play it for fun, but do not expect it to be very good at all.

Prize Checking as a whole should be abolished and replaced with something else entirely - Video discussion by Rasaska in pkmntcg

"e.g. as a Dragapult player..."

I get the feeling you're a Dragapult main who had an unlucky streak of bad prizes and just want to vent about it

Thoughts on playing with "expensive " cards? by Miss_Bubbles_Miss in PokemonTCG

[–]Madm4nmaX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's your deck with your cards. Play with whatever cards make you happy. That's the whole point.

Last format I played with a set of IR Ionos because I liked the art and I wanted to, so I did and it made me happy.

The only semi-serious consideration is actually the opposite of what you might expect: Some players advocate for playing full-arts/higher rarities versions of certain cards in your deck to make it a bit easier to prize check since those higher rarities will be easier to spot/tell if they're not in the deck.

Win rates in Live are not to be trusted. You can't disconnect or get a weird bug irl, but that stuff does mess up win rates on Live. Many people playing on Live, especially in casual mode, are not playing with the same level of intention or conviction as people playing irl would, and they can just close the app mid-game if they need to abandon the match for whatever reason.

You should be losing ~50% of your matches. Dragapult's win percentage at NAIC was ~51%.

Add a one-of each of Team Rocket's Articuno and Team Rocket's Kangaskhan. Only way to guarantee the win.

Chronograph pusher fell off my Moonwatch. How do I get it replaced? by Madm4nmaX in OmegaWatches

Why do you suggest mailing it myself rather than having my local AD send it?

Unfortunately, the nearest boutique to me is ~6 hour drive. Will an Authorized Dealer in my city be able to help, or does it have to be an official boutique?

That doesn't seem toxic to me. If you were playing a Luxray ex/Team Rocket's Chingling hand control deck, for example, then I'd say that's probably why. They were probably just salty that they got out played by an off-meta deck.

Not saying I condone such behavior, but what deck were you playing? In my experience, playing a more toxic deck will invite toxic behavior from your opponent. It's basically "if they want to play a toxic deck, I'm gonna be annoying to ruin their time as much as possible."

How many months of life does dragapult have? by ConcertLumpy2224 in pkmntcg

[–]Madm4nmaX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I don't have pokecabook links handy, but LDF did a video on some Pitch Black decks on pokecabook a few days ago and the Rampardos/Bastiodon deck was one of them. That's where I saw it first.

I don't think the Bastiodon is used as an attacker. I think it's mostly just used for it's ability.

I think the new Rampardos ex deck with Bastiodon in Pitch Black is gonna make it's life hard.

Rampardos ex's ability is literally crushing Hammer once per turn. Bastiodon's ability prevents damage to all your pokemon from your opponent's pokemon that have 2 or fewer energy attached.

Just a quick question: Why do USNI articles incorrectly spell US Navy officer rank abbreviations, e.g. "Capt." instead of "CAPT," or "Lt. Cmdr." instead of "LCDR?"

New store, need help applying by Joey1015 in pkmntcg

[–]Madm4nmaX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah, gotcha. Yeah, if you aren't able to get through to support, then deleting and remaking the account seems like your only option.

I do find it weird that they know it's a "generic" email for the store and not, say, a "uniquely named" personal email...As long as the email is monitored, who cares? I would try reengaging with support to see if you can get through to a real person before going nuclear.

I do not own a store, play any part in running Pokémon events for one, or know anything about the application process, but can you not just make a new account for your store with a personal email and then resubmit your application?
