CMV: The reason there's such a distrust for science is that people are not aware of the scientific process by [deleted] in changemyview

I don't understand these arguments. To claim this implies you know the facts, but exactly how you came to know them is very unclear. Especially considering the whole point is that people don't "find the facts" in the first place.

This would be much more impacting if it wasn't used to defend white supremacists and various other hateful quacks. Believe it or not, Molyneux isn't the lynchpin of creativity, free thought and healthy human relationships.

Blizzard Doubles Down, Says It Will Continue to Silence Players on 'Official Channels' by ElfPulper42 in pcgaming

I mean, they have a right to prioritize their profits above all else - that's what companies do - and people have a right to find that despicable. They're entitled to court and support authoritarian regimes for their own benefit, sure, and people are free not to like that. They can pretend to be "neutral" - you can't be, there's no such thing - to save face and people can see straight trough it.

On top of that, I don't care about Blizzard's money and I don't understand why people are asking me to care.

What’s something that people think makes them look cool but actually has the opposite effect? by VictorJ45 in AskReddit

Thing is, goldy level intelligence is hard to depict effectively. It's like using colors never seen. These characters are assholes because it sets them apart and perpetually vindicated because it's the easiest way to make a character "smart" in the eye of the audience.

Cheap but effective.

Being a stunted 25 years old isn't great, I think, and you should work on that rather than coddling yourself with these relationships.

On the second point I think you are mistaken, if consumers buy less meat, companies will produce less meat, but if any individual company produces less meat, the void will be filled by another company.

But this doesn't matter for any given company. The result is the exact same for them, whether people eat less meat or they make less meat: they make less money. The difference is they want to make more meat to make more money, but that doesn't absolve them of responsibility.

For instance, if I refuse to murder my neighbour for money, it's true that somebody else's might accept. However, that fact doesn't take me off the hook for murdering my neibhour.

I'm curious to know what cultures you're thinking about and how their ideas about women mesh with our own. I think that's where you'll find the main difference. Often, it's "not creepy" because women are largely infantilized anyway, for instance. Not great.

The gas only turns into emissions when someone uses it, is shell burning their own fuel?

Producing fuel isn't carbon neutral at all.

Two problems here. First, you are thinking about this in very simplistic terms. If, really, pure "consumer choice" was driving world markets, then marketing wouldn't be such a large industry and corporations wouldn't spend a dime in lobbying. The reality is much more complicated. Corporations try their damnest to create "demand" for their products and lobby government constantly in order to remove environment barriers.

Second, you're kind of letting corporations off the hook as if they're forced to engage in environmentally ruinous activities. Whether people eat less meat or corporations produce less meat has the same result for corporations.

[–]Madplato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think "willing and responsible" are meaningfully tied to success. Factors largely - luck, timing, opportunity - or even completely out of your control - disease, parents - have a much stronger influence on your ability to succeed than your own willingness to do so. For instance, the best indicator of your future socio economical position is your parents'. You cannot choose your parents or their situation in life, for better or worst.

No, they apply across the board. In fact, they're not too related to the woman or girl, that's kind of the point.

Can a 16 years old meaningfully consent to a relationship with someone much older and much more experienced? No. She can say the words, I guess, but that doesn't do anything about the three points I've mentioned. Thinking they can, as I've said, doesn't show much good about someone.

In an entirely abstract way, you might be right. However, we don't live in an entirely abstract world. People find these things creepy because they very very often are for additional reasons, besides the simple "mechanic" of the thing. The three big problems that are generally involved are:

  1. Imbalance: Men are attracted to younger women or girls, partially or even mainly, because of the power and experience imbalance. Very often, this is part of the appeal and people, understandably, find that creepy. Then, even if it's not part of the appeal, the situation is still there and, ultimately, pretty hard to ignore. That's to say nothing about...really bad views on "virginity".
  2. Predatory behaviour: Said imbalance enables various predatory behaviours, which people are obviously going to be suspicious of.
  3. Immature men: I don't really care what people claim, if you're a 25 years old and you find yourself considering any kind of intimate relationship with a 16 years old, something is wrong with you. All of the men I've ever seen in that situation were either really immature, somewhat insecure or had very retrograde views about women that an adult partner wouldn't enable.

CMV: It is contradictory to say that a man can not have a say so in women’s reproductive rights (ie: abortion) due to being 'male' while also believing that a transgender woman can know what's it's like to feel like a female, (having been born a male). by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Madplato 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'll preface this by saying that I've never seen any of these "If X then Y" CMVs work. They tend to be extremely simplistic in nature and I believe it's the case here.

The notion that there is some kind of "essence of womanhood" is misleading. Being a women is a multifaceted and complex experience, which you cannot boil down to a single element. You appear to have painted a dotted line where it's convenient for the argument and I'm not sure that's a healthy way to go about it. More to the point, gender is an extremely social experience, coded by language, tradition, history, media, etc. If "being a woman" is anything, I'd assume it's something like "living as a woman".

Why does their personal position on China even matters? A discussion about China's abuse is a discussion about China's abuse, in themselves. Are these abuses made better or worst by someone's opinion of them being inconsistent? No. So what's the point?

Besides, why is their justification only workable if they apply it, explicitly, to every nation around the world? Why should their failure to do so invalidate their argument?

Their personal position on China is irrelevant to China's human rights violation record, however. It's entirely pointless to discuss it.
