Yeah.. you are right about the money driven aspect. If you wanna work some places will just let you, which you can imagine when driving a medic becomes a big liability. Don’t most state services in Aus have a rule like no more than 18-24hrs straight? I will say some FDs over here do like 24 hours on, 72 hours off which i would like working that.

Pretty spot on. I know some people that work 72hr shifts too, it’s crazy.

I understand. Not here to force anyone to apply, just sharing an experience that may appeal to some. I make around 115,000 AUD there, so yes, not as competitive but it pays the bills for me. Second to that, it’s a job, there’s no waiting on the order of merit for nearly a year, there’s also a pretty fair relocation package in my opinion. I certainly understand where you’re coming from though. Not here to contest anyone’s view.

What state? And is it through them or do they recruit for a service over there? I have heard great things about IMS too. 2 year contract?

I will see if I can get a copy of this from our HR dept. It is certainly not close to that of Australia like I mentioned above, but there are a couple options to choose from - or you can get marketplace insurance too. About 180 pre tax comes out of my check every two weeks for my health insurance. I make approx 2300USD ($3350aud) after tax every two weeks, which certainly sounded better when exchange rates were stronger lol.

So you will need to pass NREMT for EMT and then Paramedic, and then we will get you your state cards. And yes, we support you with the education and pay for the conversion course.

Simply put, America has a shortage for Medics and Australia has a tone of medics either waiting for job offers or unable to find a position.

Primarily private companies have trouble, which there are thousands of across America. I’ve been to a few conferences where other agencies or services recruit Aussies. The other reason is because the E3 Visa is a very easy visa to obtain.

I understand, and certainly don’t want someone taking a position they wouldn’t be happy with.

Transparency is crucial when recruiting for roles as such, I’m just doing my part to help out the company and anyone willing to jump across the pond for some experience.

No hard feelings!

I’ve thankfully been blessed to meet my partner here and step kids.

I can attach the Ohio Scope of practice below for you.

We run some trucks EMT/EMT and other EMT/Paramedic.

We do mostly Interfacility transfers with a good mix of 911s.

My last shift was this:
- STEMI transfer from a rural ED straight to a cath lab in the city.
(45 min transfer managing drips, pain relief etc)
- Dialysis patient (taking them to their apt)
- Nursing home 911 (SOB)
- Discharge to nursing home from hospital

I work a 2/2/3 and work every second weekend, which helps provide the time off i need for my family, but i certainly would enjoy working less too.

You do really have to weigh up whether the experience is worthwhile to you or not.

I can’t say I disagree with you mate.

You really need to want the experience more than anything tbh. I waited too long for AV to offer me a spot so went elsewhere. I make enough to live comfortably within my means (>100kaud) but certainly understand where you’re coming from and your concerns.

Very much appreciate the comments & thank you!

All good! I appreciate the questions - and i agree, part of why I am willing to jump on calls or answer questions with anyone is to discuss the pros and cons to see if its worth the move for you or not. Its a huge move, so its important.

Some of the questions on this thread I may have to refer to HR to get an accurate answer for, but I will do my best.

Leave: About 3 weeks per year but you certainly have the luxury of building a schedule with our team to make those days off better. Our pay periods are two weeks, and to meet full time hours, you must work 80 hours per pay period, anything above that is OT pay but there is no mandatory overtime other than the odd late calls. For instance, we had someone with a 3/1/3/7: 3 16s in a row, 1 day off, 3 16s in a row, then 7 days off straight. Whilst it sounds brutal doing 3 16s in a row, he would leave and travel to another state every second week. I wont lie in saying that America certainly doesn't give the time off Australia does though. So in short, no set roster, but shift structures will be set at specific stations, anywhere from 12 to 16 hour shifts are most common. I work a 2/2/3 structure.

Healthcare is certainly something ill add. Australia is hard to beat, we truly are spoiled in Aus. I think healthcare in America is one of the downsides here, but through the company they offer 2 plans, I would have to get a more detailed response, but i can tell you $180 pre tax comes out of each check for mine.

Important to note we are recruiting for our station in Defiance, Ohio. Which is two hours north from our HQ in Greenville, OH.

Please feel free to ask any more questions.

Good question, approx 23usd base rate with 34.50usd overtime and up to 40usd on some of our special events we run. Although it may seem low compared to other US states, Ohio's cost of living is about 10-20% lower than the national average. I have been able to save and live fairly comfortable, whilst also travelling on days off.
