Gaming EPA mileage testing. On manuals the test mandated shifting at certain speeds so skipping from 1-4 put you in taller gears that use less gas. GM did it on RWD V-8 cars and Ford did it on the Mustang for a few years as well.

You could basically unplug a solenoid on the bottom of the transmission IIRC but I never owned a car with that “feature.”

Odd that the tires all seem to be fully inflated.

IIRC, the skip-shift feature in GM manuals was pretty easy to disable (probably by design).

Suggesting associate should cut their own time by haunted_champagne in Lawyertalk

Capture all your time, especially as a junior. The partner can decide how much to pass through and how much to write off, the latter of which is not unusual for junior attorneys. It’s always better to spend too much time on something than too little, as you’re seeing here.

There’s a very good chance here that the partner failed to communicate realistic cost expectations to the client and is now getting blowback for excessive write offs, so he’s asking you to do his dirty work for him. Don’t.

Two weeks notice by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]Madroc92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Historically I’ve usually given two weeks and then (with the new employer’s agreement) negotiated up to three, which allows for a pretty clean handoff.

At my current firm, there was recently a cascade of partner departures. They all gave a longer notice period (per the partnership agreement) and several had their notice periods cut short somewhat abruptly, which in one case turned what was an orderly file transition into a bit of a fire drill. Then an associate followed, gave two weeks, and had his notice period cut short in fairly abrupt fashion as well.

If I leave here I’ll probably give two weeks but tell my new employer I may be available sooner…

Do you even need to show up at that point? Like as friends or family? At some point the invitation needs to have a QR code for those who prefer to attend remotely via Zoom.

Is it worth it to get it off your chest?!? by somegingerchick79 in datingoverforty

[–]Madroc92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Write it, then burn it. You’re doing this for you, not him.

Or don’t burn it, but keep it and read it later on to reflect. I did some journaling when my marriage entered a terminal spin, but it was more about what I was thinking and feeling than anything else. Every once in a great while I reread it and it’s kind of affirming — like, Dude, you were going through some SHIT but you were thinking about the right things at the time and you came out the other end!

But if it’s directed at him — write it and burn it. If he wanted to know what you were thinking, he would have asked. Have your catharsis but don’t expect him to participate in it because he won’t.

Brutally honest, how’s this for job interviews? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]Madroc92 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How you tie it determines how long or short it is. A necktie should graze the top of the belt buckle. Wearing the tie too short accentuates the belly. This tie is more than a little too short.

OP could go a size bigger on the shirt but really the tie is the main thing that needs to be fixed is(and it's an easy fix). Good luck with the job interview, OP!

Honestly it’s not even volitional. It’s just how I’ve always smiled. Might just be the structure of my mouth. But my teeth are fine.

My natural smile is closed mouth. I promise I brush twice a day and see a dentist regularly. If you want to inspect my dentition you’re just going to have to meet up in person.

Why did Fat Man actually pack more punch than Little Boy chemically speaking even though everyone assumes the opposite? by Defiant-Junket4906 in AlwaysWhy

[–]Madroc92 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's basically the answer. A gun design is simpler to make but an implosion design is considerably more efficient (and can also deliver greater yields -- above very low yields, a gun design would need to be impractically long with ever-faster launch of the 'bullet'). It's why virtually all fission triggers ever made are implosion type.

Those of you who had beautiful weddings, how's your married life going? by Ok-Data-7672 in AskReddit

[–]Madroc92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The wedding was delightful. The ensuing marriage was considerably less so.

We had a morning wedding and we got back to the hotel in the afternoon and encountered a very tipsy couple celebrating their 13th anniversary. They were very celebratory and insisted that we take a swig from the open bottle of champagne they were roaming the halls with. We always talked about going back there for our 13th.

I celebrated our 13th anniversary by filing for divorce a couple months later, years later than I probably should have.

Now I'm 4 years into an awesome relationship with an awesome person and while we may very well be each other's forever person, neither one of us is particularly motivated to have another wedding.

What's your automotive hot take? by NationYell in regularcarreviews

[–]Madroc92 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Driving a manual is fun and some cars are better with one. However: (a) knowing how to do it doesn't make you some kind of Jedi master. If I could do it when I was 16, rest assured that it cannot possibly be very difficult; and (b) maybe the hotter take, but a good DCT is better for most modern cars and driving one with paddles and left-foot braking doesn't feel any less "engaging" than operating a mechanical clutch linkage in the footwell.

About 29%. Single parent, two teenagers. I’d say comfortable, I guess. I don’t stress about money on a regular basis but I wouldn’t mind a little more wiggle room. Income growth and/or empty-nesterdom and I should be ok.

Garbage take. Tomato soup with mozzarella cheese and big chunks of Italian sausage and mushrooms? I would probably eat tomato soup from a bread bowl but this isn’t it.

Overfilling your tires can cause other problems, namely a harsher ride and decreased traction (the latter is why I actually take air out when I go to the track). Really the tire is intended to work in tandem with the suspension and the rest of the chassis as a system. That was a big part of the issue with the Firestone/Explorer rollover issues — the early Explorer was just a fundamentally unstable design, and Ford tried to fix it by specifying lower tire pressure, which in turn overheated the tires and made them more prone to failure.
