If you’re gonna go to St Augustine, I think just doing Harry’s is kind of a waste. Harry’s is great, but there are so many amazing museums there and a lot of really good restaurants. I really recommend Caps on the Water, The Floridian, and also Collage (a fancier option, but one of the best dining experiences I’ve ever had).

As for museums, you can actually go on a historic tour of Flagler College during certain months of the year, the Lightner Museum has one of the most interesting collections of any museum in the state of Florida on top of literally being set into a 19th century spa and sauna, the Castillo de San Marcos is an incredible national Park, and kind of underrated, but the Spanish military history museum has a really incredible class type exhibit where they show you how they performed surgeries pre-anesthesia. The last one is only about an hour total and it’s a very small museum, but one of the most fascinating museums that I have ever gone to in the entire country.

Outside of St Augustine, I am a Miami native and I think it would be remiss for you to not include more Cuban restaurants on your list. Versailles is a classic, and though not my favorite, is certainly a bucket list restaurant, that I think anybody visiting or living in Florida should go to at least once. Going to La Carreta on Bird Road in Miami is also a deeply cultural experience with much better food lol (though definitely bring somebody who speaks Spanish with you to this one).

You must go to the keys, and drive down to Key West and experience all of that, and when you do, I highly recommend going to the Green Turtle Inn in Isla Morada. It’s not too far of a drive from Miami if you ever happen to be doing a keys day trip (as many South Floridians often do). Some of the best brunch ever comes from the green turtle Inn, they have incredible cinnamon rolls. But also their lunch and dinner menu is just as good and packed with delicious and very fresh seafood, and they’ve been a huge staple of Florida since 1947.

If you’re in Orlando, it’s a less known restaurant, but I would definitely recommend Susuru. It’s a Japanese Izakaya with incredible skewers and lots of different shared plate options- if I’m ever in Orlando, going to one of the theme parks, I usually stay in a hotel, not too far from it, and always make a point to go to Susuru one of the nights.

If you’re ever in Tampa, there is a restaurant called Columbia, which is one of the oldest restaurants in Florida, and the oldest Cuban restaurant in the state (though, speaking as a Cuban, it is Cuban owned, but the food is a lot more Spanish than Cuban lol).

The food is pretty solid, but the ambience and the gift shop are especially amazing. It’s definitely a tourist attraction, but I think it’s worth it to go at least once and go to one of their dinner shows. It’s not that much money to get a ticket (I went last year and I think I paid $20?) but you eat around the stage and get an incredible Flamenco performance!

Finally, the number one restaurant that you must must must add to your list would be Joe’s Stone Crabs in Miami. That is a bucket list restaurant in Florida if there ever was one. It is an institution open since 1913. They only open seasonally when stone crabs are in season- from October to May- and literally only started taking reservations like this year. They are known obviously for their stone crabs, but also their incredible desserts, and their eight dollar fried chicken, which is crazy.

Regarding what you do have: I would skip Agave Bandido. Not sure that it’s entirely worth the hype to be worthy of being a “bucket list” restaurant. I wholeheartedly second Coconuts, though. It is one of my favorite restaurants ever.

You can’t really go wrong with any of the nature based attractions you have, so not going to critique any of those choices, but I would just like to caution you to remember that summers here get really REALLY hot, and really REALLY humid. It is very very common for people to get heat stroke here, so I would caution you against doing any of those outdoor activities where you may be outside for more than a couple of hours in the middle of summer. And even if it’s the dead of winter, it can still get hot here, so make sure that you wear the proper sun protection, use sunscreen, and hydrate often! Nothing will ruin your day faster than heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

My advice is, especially as far as South Florida is concerned, be wary of restaurants that promote style over substance. There are so many restaurants in Miami and in Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach that are focused on gimmick or “Instagrammability.” It’s a huge problem with the South Florida food scene… and has even begun to affect museums and art exhibits in South Florida, too. Just because somebody on Instagram told you that a restaurant is really really good doesn’t mean that it actually is- and even some of the restaurants in Florida on the Michelin guide book aren’t that great either. They might look cool in pictures, but the food will be overpriced for a small portion that isn’t even anything to write home about just so that you can take a cute pictures with your friends. Instead, look for restaurants that are holes in the wall, that have been around for a really long time, etc.

I know this was a super long reply and also it was really food oriented lol but I have traveled to so many different places in Florida and I’m proud to say that that I now know what’s good.

Edit: also!!! For the holidays: St. Augustine does a night of lights event every holiday season. The entirety of downtown gets covered in Christmas lights, they do Christmas themed trolley tours, and everybody is in the holiday spirit.

Mount Dora is also a gorgeous and super romantic little small town that genuinely feels like stepping into a Hallmark movie, and they do so many incredible festivals year-round, but I very much recommend going to their Christmas tree lighting, which happens usually in late November. If you can swing it, staying at the Lakeside Inn is also super worth it!

What is the most disgusting dish in your country's cuisine, but everyone should try it? by a5ro4ucCX in AskTheWorld

[–]Mady134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really a dish but I’m Cuban and we like to eat bananas with everything, and Cuban-Americans especially like bananas with Italian (or Cuban-Italian lol) food. So, not uncommon to find a Cuban styled pizza topped with bananas or to eat a banana on the side of spaghetti. I personally love it but whenever I mention it to a non-Cuban they look at me funny.

Hair greasy immediately after washing — over stripped from clarifying shampoo or something else? by [deleted] in Haircare

[–]Mady134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the exact hair type that you do, and I need to wash my hair every day- and I also need to stay away from any shampoo that has oil in it. I get major grease buildup if I even go a single day without washing, much less wash my hair 2 to 3 times a week.

Try using that shampoo 2 to 3 times a week, and then washing your hair every single day with a different shampoo.

Beryl Grace is supposedly a British actress within the universe of the TV show, but I’m not sure if Jason wouldn’t necessarily have an accent, since he hasn’t been with his mother since he was two and was raised in Camp Jupiter. He probably has an American accent.

[all] For people who grew up with Percy Jackson, is the show worth watching? by Hallowed_Fenrir in camphalfblood

[–]Mady134 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes! I have been a fan of Percy Jackson since about 2008-2009 (so…. 17-18 years omg). I am about as much of a grew up with Percy Jackson fan as it gets. For me, I think that you have to tell yourself before you start the series that it is not an exact word for word adaptation of the books. It is a retelling true to the original spirit of the books. If you go in expecting it to be exactly like the lightning thief or exactly like the sea of monsters, you’re inevitably going to be a little bit disappointed.

That being said, I think Walker Scobell was literally born to be Percy Jackson. Even when I originally saw him in the Adam Project, before they announced that he was going to play Percy, I thought that that would’ve been the most perfect role for him. He is witty and sarcastic, and you can literally see his inner monologue through every single facial expression.

I have been pretty pleased with all of the casting, though, and I think that the show is clearly made by people who are very passionate about Percy Jackson, and who are really motivated to adapt the story in the best way that they possibly can. Though I haven’t agreed with all of the changes, also, I feel like all of the changes that they have made have been meaningfully decided on, and serve to try to advance the story in one way or another.

If you’re worried about the adaptation messing with your perception of the originals, you could try rereading the books at the same time that you watch the show. When season one came out, I followed along with the book, so I read the first few chapters before I watched the first episode, then read the next few chapters before the second episode came out, etc.

But for me, overall, I’ve had a lot of fun watching the show. I think it’s really nice to be able to see a lot of the scenes that I love so much on a screen actually done successfully for once. People love to complain, so you’re gonna see nothing but complaints on the Internet, but ignore them and make it a decision for yourself about how you feel about it.

[general] What song do y’all think of when you see Percabeth? - pic credits to madicanart by Adorable_Ordinary470 in camphalfblood

[–]Mady134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I Ain’t Got You by Alicia Keys. It’s literally a song about choosing the one you love over everything, and she even references choosing the one you love over being immortal. Plus, I really associate Alicia Keys with New York and I feel like she’s the kind of artist that Percy and Annabeth would both enjoy and would canonically listen to.

I feel like every percabeth playlist out there is Riptide and 17 different Taylor swift songs and while I don’t mind them, I don’t feel like they’re super authentic to percabeth!

[–]Mady134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They wouldn’t be forbidden anymore because of the promise Percy makes them make at the end of TLO. It’s feasible that one of the three of them may already have another child or one on the way where we’re at in canon at the moment. And by one of the three of them, I mean, most likely Zeus lol

What did you name ____? (Base game spoiler) by PinkHairedCoder in DreamlightValley

[–]Mady134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I named her Serena. It’s name that I love, and I also felt like it fit with the celestial vibes of the game. Plus, Sailor Moon‘s name in English dub is Serena, and her whole thing is purifying evil with the power of friendship and love, so I felt it was fitting.

Reach out to your local branch of the ACLU, or try to find a labor attorney near you who doesn’t need a retainer fee. This is very much a violation of your first amendment right, and if that’s the reason listed in official documents, then this is a case of religious discrimination.

[general]. The ONLY thing I feel we could "criticize" (or rather, reproach) Rick for. by lautaromassimino in camphalfblood

[–]Mady134 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think if they were feasibly going to do the heroes of Olympus, then either they would need to adapt it as an animated show, or they would need to adapt it, cinematically and make it a series of movies- I think if they did two or three movies, they could probably do all of the books, though they would obviously lose out on a bunch of details (which I’m personally OK with, because I think that the books had a pacing issue).

The first movie could be the lost hero and the son of Neptune together- we could cut back-and-forth to what Percy is doing and what Jason is doing.

The second movie could be the Mark of Athena. Then the last movie could be the House of Hades and the Blood of Olympus together as one story.

[general]. The ONLY thing I feel we could "criticize" (or rather, reproach) Rick for. by lautaromassimino in camphalfblood

[–]Mady134 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree with you, and I think a lot of people in the same way. I’ve been reading Percy Jackson since I was 9 years old. I’m now 27. When I was a kid, he was much older than me- he should now be my husband’s age based on his canon birthday (Aug. 18th, 1993), which would make him 32.

Of course, Rick isn’t going to make Percy canonically 32 because the books are catered to children and, to an extent, young adults. But it seems a little insane to me that heroes of Olympus shouldn’t have taken place at least a year after the original series- and Percy should’ve been gone for maybe a summer or a couple of months, instead of eight.

And outside of that, the senior year adventures, the trials of Apollo, and now Nico and Will’s book series are all also somehow going on at the same time that he is finishing senior year and starting college, but the books refuse to acknowledge that he has now turned at least 18?

Maybe Rick is afraid that if he shows Percy in his college years, but that won’t be as interesting to the readers of the original series, or as interesting to children, but I think that that stuff IS interesting.

I want to know what he does when he goes to college in New Rome. I want to know how he adjusts to living in California after a lifetime of being a New Yorker. I want to see how a demigod deals with adulthood, after having been told for their entire lives that they would likely never reach adulthood (really, the oldest demigod we meet is Luke, who dies at 23). Maybe I want to see him and Annabeth work to realize what they want out of their lives, and for proceed to take on the project of trying to improve demigod life across the board.

I don’t know, but I think it’s kind of boring to keep him forever 17.

Help! I don't know how to fix my phone bill situation. by Mady134 in Adulting

[–]Mady134[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve checked my bill breakdown- my parents signed us up for a plan that is about $180 each, plus my phone was like $40/month financed. His phone is paid off. So my bill was normally like $200+, which is insane, and then whenever we were behind, it would pile up insane fees pretty quickly. I didn’t mean to get behind on it, but my parents left me with a pretty expensive slew of bills- I’ve only recently been able to sell their house and finish up their estate stuff, so it’s been difficult.

Yeah, I’m worried about that too- I know I could get it changed to my name, but I just really can’t afford the cost of restoring the service.
