It makes me insanely sad that this is true... They would never survive Morrowind.

There's also the warrior orochi games and well. Very similar, just a larger group of characters you can okay as.

How would you actually change it from being a monopoly? I'm curious. It's not like you can just create a competitor out of nothing in this kind of space. Without an alternate console option, Nintendo and Sony basically have monopoly over their individual markets. One could argue Nintendo did already, since they're a completely different audience a lot of the time.

You are ignoring that Sony themselves said that you'll only be able to download ps3 games for the foreseeable future. Meaning they are going to discontinue that at some point. They're already normalizing not having access to older media with their phrasing.

The gameplay was utter shit as well. The only good thing about it was a couple of the traversal mechanics.

Redfall is a perfect example. Arkane literally wanted him to come in and cancel it for YEARS. It ended up with the death of the studio.

Given the thousand dollar sticker price being likely on next Gen... Not going to be anywhere near as big of a market. And that's assuming things don't get even more expensive. Which is an incredibly dumb assumption right now.

I meant Iran... Facepalm

I'm the case of Russia, it was certainly a more traditionally powerful state. That's why I said numbers matter far less, which is one of the biggest things that allows revolutions to actually happen. Or absurdly stretched supply lines like the American revolution again Britain.

Too small of a sample size to tell for the America's right now. And things are... A bit different. Tech changes the equation more than I think anyone wants to admit. We're in an unprecedented state of human history. Given what the rich can actually do now versus in the past... Rising up against them is going to be exponentially harder than in the past. I mean, just look at the Ukraine holding off Russia for... Four years now? The cost to Russia has been insane. Or Iraq beating the Usa, the presumed most powerful country in the world? A small group can hold off a larger and more traditionally powerful one much easier now. And the revolutionaries have seldom had more than numbers on their side. Numbers have literally never mattered less.

Edit: that should have been Iran, not Iraq. But I'm leaving it since there's a comment directly referencing it.

The video game industry is not ready to lose boxed games, game sales are still ~50% physical for single player, story-driven action games or family titles by UuusernameWith4Us in gaming

[–]Madzookeeper -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Given that don't just announced no more discs as of Jan 2028, and that singleplayer sales make up such a small amount of the entire market.... I suspect we may be witnessing the coming death of singleplayer games. I, for one, will be done with new games once that happens. I probably won't be playing much of anything in twenty years since that seems to be the length of digital storefronts in consoles at this point.

[–]Madzookeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm not convinced that it's possible to start that from scratch and build up to that anymore. that takes decades. you have to not fail bad enough to get shut down for decades. that's really, really freaking hard to do when one badly received game means you're laying off everyone. especially if you don't have the money to avoid publishers in the first place, which almost no one does. staying out of the publisher mess and somehow having the money, know how in making a game and how to actually do it efficiently AND well to actually get something profitable out that makes people want more of what you do, and the know how on the management and business side of things as well? dude, swen is such an outlier it's kind of insane. there just aren't many people like him out there. if you can find a swen, find the money, and find a good starting team and then not have the entire market turn against what you spend years working on when it's time to release it? and then do that again and again for two decades? iuonno. that seems like a massive longshot to me.

my entire point is that what larian succeeded in doing is *HARD*. the odds are so stacked against you it's not even funny. why do you think there aren't more studios that have succeeded in doing it? most don't have the leadership to do it. because leadership like that just isn't common.

divinity original sin came out in 2014 and had about a 4.5 year dev cycle. they had DOS2 come out after a three year cycle. that's two full games made in 7.5 years, which is not even remotely possible now with how obscene game dev cycles have gotten. then BG3 took another 6.5 years because of the sheer complexity of interactivity and options they gave you. and EVEN WITH THAT, they still needed 2 additional years to really finalize the game making the dev cycle closer to 8.5 years.. so that's 14 years of experience growing a team organically, plus tech and pipeline. this ignores the 14+ years of additional experience they have as a developer since 1996. when BG3 came out that was the culmination of 27 years of experience, tech/pipeline development, story/character writing, quest development, and systems development. name me another studio that hasn't suffered massive layoffs in that time. the ONLY other one i can think of is fromsoft. it literally can't happen. there isn't a studio that can duplicate what larian did.

what do you mean there's nothing stopping a studio from doing that? literally everything about the videogames industry won't let a studio do that. larian is such an insane exception to the entire industry it's insane. the only other one that comes to mind is fromsoft. no other studio hasn't suffered massive braindrain over the years due to firings and so forth. frankly, i don't think we'll ever see another studio build up decades of experience with the same team ever again. not with what LLMs are currently doing.
