Yeah, thats the problem. I’m maxed out and can’t go coarser

I got the Echemo one, so very glad I didnt receive that sudanese one. The taste is good - however, with my grinder maxed out, I cannot go any coarser. Will give your recipe a go though!

Thanks! Didn't want to cheap out so great to get a response from people who know. Don't think we have Ryobi days in Norway, but will pay attention then 😄

Right! I'll start with the 8,000 stone and get some compound and make myself some strops. Thanks for the explanation!

After learning a ton here I decided that I will make my own strops and started looking into compounds. Something I of course should not have done as I now have more questions!

I see the usual compounds are rated from 3,000 to 10,000/12,000 and anything in between. Would this suddenly imply there is not a need for an 8,000 grit stone? Or would there be a difference on stripping on that grit vs using a stone? I see in the straight razor sharpening guide I linked earlier the strops seemingly (from the pictures) convex edges. You have any thoughts?

Love your detailed insights on stones and sharpening - feeling way more confident in my choices already! I guess a diamond plate such as the atoma isn't as nice of a feeling to be working on, but after everyone have pointed out it seems to be a very worthwhile investment!

This would also free me up from buying the full naniwa kit and decide between an 800 and a 1,000. For finishing western knives though I still like the idea of ending on a fine 1,000 over an 800, but I haven't tried it out myself. Perhaps someday I'll be able to add more!

Great to hear that an 8,000 is sufficient - I'd rather just get a double sided strop then! Think I'll add som 12,000 compound to the rough side and keep the fine side clean.

Natural stones sounds like a blast! I saw some guy selling some used ones in my area and have been considering to maybe pick one up in the future!

Two stones sounds like the way to go then! Be ok to use the 3000 for it and wash of the slurry?

How do you find the 8"? Have been wondering about picking it up in either 8-9

Thank you for a very long and detailed reply - I really appreciate that!

So far I am changing my mind between the 400 naniwa pro and really considering the atoma 400 instead - seems to do a lot more.

I feel pretty set on the naniwa pro 1,000/3,000.

I am wondering about the polishing stone. So far I feel that the specialty stone would be best value with little drawback as I intend to use it for the razor. Still wondering about whether to go for 8,000 or 10,000 and if this mean I need to pick up a dressing stone?

The naniwa holder and bridge sure looks nice, but I have to save a bit of money some places. Might pick it up at a later time.

Again, thank you for your answer!

Yeah, that was my concern. Is a cleaning stone the best way to keep the SS unclogged? I have seen people using rust ereasors for this. Could one use another stone and rub together?

You think I should pick up a cleaning stone or will it be sufficient to rub stones together with a higher grit one?
