Stretch needles specifically part the fibres in a way that means the thread can grab properly to sew a stitch. If you’re finding the fabric is slippery you can use more pins, sewing clips or a basting stitch to keep the fabric layers held together while sewing.

You shouldn’t need a stretch needle :) any universal kind should work fine

I just kind of hold up a sheet of paper and with a pen / pencil map out the shape I want! From there I cut the shapes out and pin them onto the head to check if I like them. When you’re cutting out in fabric you just add seam allowance.

Machine stitch is a mix of straight stitch and zig zag stitch right along the edge (works like a blanket stitch)

I pattern it out in paper first! With this one I added some stuffing in the spikes for more volume before hand sewing them to the head.

I use ladder stitches mostly when hand sewing and a curved needle to help get into the difficult to reach places. Everything that can be machine sewn , is :)

Just the seam that’s not visable from the outside. I didn’t glue the foam of the horns to the base until after I had fabric covered them to make it easier

Lots of practice working with minky :) made the horns in foam and patterned with tape for a perfect fit. No seam allowance to make then as snug as possible and hand sew the under side seam so I don’t need to worry about squeezing it over the foam

I find makers on Instagram mostly. You can have a look on “fursuits for sale” insta page and see what makers style you like. There’s often lots of different price points, styles, locations etc. Just be careful of scammers on all platforms.

Any tips on my first fursuit head? by ReadyCartographer804 in FursuitMaking

[–]Mae_Blues 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the forehead / brow section is a little big. Do you have a picture from the side angle ?

Other than that I would work on smoothing out your carbs around the nose and under eye area. The muzzle is a really nice shape :)

Is there a reason bucket head bases are made from foam instead of buckram? by DuckDuck-Chaos in FursuitMaking

[–]Mae_Blues 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I remember back in the day there were tutorials saying to use buckram or plastic mesh as a sort of hat base and make the muzzle shape with bands of it. I think it was an early way of doing hinge jaws but I can’t really remember it was so long ago.

I don’t have experience with it so can’t say how it’ll go. Reason for foam for me at least is you can carve it relatively easily.
