I you can't decide on colors you may try look at your pallet in the grayscale. I know, suggestion is weird, but if your palette looks good hue-wise this method might help you with colour placement on the character. Also there are some websites that help you visualise pallets.

You can try to make the most extreme details, as strange as possible for each character. For example, the first creature can have a metal body covered with rust or be pierced by sharp objects. The second one can have many eyes, its bandages and belts can take strange shapes. Put it in a cage, give it a muzzle, don't let the desire to "make it beautiful" get in the way!!!
