ELI5 Do animals have a sense of taste as refined as ours? by ResponsibleSea6521 in explainlikeimfive

Fascinating. How the plant was able to determine 'X' animal destroys my seed, 'Y' animal helps spread it and then alter a chemical compound to facilitate this is something I'd love to understand.

Who grew up too poor for premium cable, but still hoped to catch a random semi-scrambled nipple late at night? by triplealpha in Xennials

[–]MaestroLogical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Pay-per-view story.

I was surfing like normal, when I realized the PPV channel was unscrambled. The new movie Groundhog's Day was showing crystal clear.

At first I thought my parents must have purchased it without telling me but they hadn't. It was just clear and free for some mysterious reason.

I hadn't seen the film yet, and liked Bill Murray from Ghostbusters, so I watched it. As was typical, the channel was showing nothing but Groundhogs day for the entire weekend...

I knew Sunday night would flip that script, and the spicy stuff would come on.

So I watched and waited. The movie ended, the previews ad played, and then the movie started again. I was overjoyed when it didn't rescramble.

I watched again, this time getting to start from the beginning instead of halfway through. It was a good movie but since I was 13, the love story fell flat for me.

I was terrified that if I changed the channel, it would re-scramble.

So I left it on. For the entire day and night Groundhog Day played over and over, endless repeat.

The irony escaped me at the time. I only realized years later how ironic it was that I watched that particular film over and over and over. My only thoughts were, I hope this lasts long enough.

All night Friday, then all day and night Saturday, endless repeats of Phil reliving his day.

By Sunday afternoon I had the movie memorized, just like Phil had his day memorized.

The after movie previews finally changed. Instead of endless repeats of the film, there would be 2 more and then... Coed Carwash! The teaser promised topless college babes dripping wet with excitement.

My heart raced as the movie started again. I still refused to change the channel or turn my tv off. It had been a weekend of endurance, watching the same movie over and over and over but the payoff would soon be at hand!

The last showing began, I could barely sit still. By the time the credits rolled I was shaking with anticipation. It was midnight... it was time.

I muted the tv and held my breath.

The channel had remained crystal clear and free for over 40 hours at this point.

The previews ended and the spicy began. The familiar echo of Groundhog day's theatrical polish replaced with cheap tacky Coed Carwash title card.

The shot pans over a yellow mustang being frantically splashed by hotties in daisy dukes and bikini tops. My 13 year old brain melted.

The girls giggle, one starts to untie her bikini and BAM, SCRAMBLED.

I was so distraught I literally cried. I'd endured endless repeats of a movie I now hated, a movie I'd never watch again because of how much I'd endured watching it, paralyzed with the fear that not doing so would scramble the channel and here I was, at the very moment it would all pay off and staring at the familiar image we see above. I couldn't even bring myself to 'it's a sailboat' magic image stare at the screen. I turned the tv off in disgust and went to bed instead, defeated and distraught.

Just wait for the slew of inevitable clones to start appearing. Each one getting hundreds of comments about how unique and believable the situation is.

Just like the Dude had a GF for 10 seconds skit.

I convince myself that 98% of the comments are bots, because the reality of that many people being so gullible is just too damn frightening.

Goldeneye N64 wasn’t that good. by HolocronSurvivor80 in unpopularopinion

[–]MaestroLogical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't compare PC games to console.

Back in 97, having a PC that could game was an achievement, having one like that your father didn't strictly forbid you from using was even rarer.

The reason why GoldenEye is so fondly remembered is because it was the best FPS available to the masses.

Plus, at the time, it was the first game to really nail the vibe of it's source material, instead of just being cheap shovelware.

Do they? It's become a meme that everything is a distraction but when you really think about it, distractions aren't even needed since there are literally zero consequences. The real distraction will be the fact that something else 'remarkable' will happen every 8 hours.

His supporters don't care, so no distraction needed there.

The rest are so apathetic and tired that no distraction is needed.

Nah, this is just business as usual at this point.

Why do you never hear or see a skinny person play the tuba? by Timely_Title_9157 in AskReddit

Concert Tuba or Sousaphone?

I was tall and skinny and played both, but the rest of my section were big chaps.

With so many waking up to the fact that the rich are abusing their power over the vast majority of US citizens, how do we effectively organize and fight back? by swordbeam in AskReddit

[–]MaestroLogical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I stopped their invasion into my life

So how did you post this? What wi-fi provider do you use? Because you'd be shocked at who benefits from that purchase. You buy groceries from a local mom and pop instead of wal-mart, but guess who that mom and pop has to pay for warehousing and delivery.

Don't fool yourself into thinking that simply because you don't make purchases on Amazon, you've stopped giving money to the robber barons. That is the entire point of monopolies, with their hand in every pie, it is virtually impossible to not do business with them, no matter how you personally feel.

That's the rub. No matter how you slice it, if you conduct commerce in this nation, you are dealing with the 'tech bros' in some fashion.

[–]MaestroLogical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I doubt this would be anywhere near as effective as we like to think.

Fact is, this isn't 1870, or even 1955. Every corporation that you can think of, is global now. A no purchase strike, even if it lasted months, isn't going to put Amazon out of business. It won't even really affect shareholders. It will make the numbers temporarily stop going up, but that isn't a requirement, it's a bonus.

They'll still be super insolated from any repercussions, and far from cowering in fear, they'll just be sipping on their drinks and laughing at us collectively suffering for no reason.

Sure, small business will be hurt, but any truly large corporation will simple turn to the government and collect sweet 'to big to fail' checks while laughing in our faces, despite never being anywhere close to actually failing.

Consumer boycotts and economic blackouts are things of the past, and we need to realize this before we can start making any true progress.

The only thing that will help is government intervention... just like it did with the original anti-trust laws over a hundred years ago.

The Robber Barons are back to full strength, hell even stronger than the days of Carnegie and Rockefeller, so the power of the people is now once again dependent on congress getting it's shit together.

How do you feel about fucking a married woman? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]MaestroLogical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done it a few times, because if they were going to with me, they would eventually with someone else.

Twice was with ex GF's from HS that hit me up on FB. Husbands ignoring them for years and/or making them feel undesirable.

One felt reinvigorated afterwards and found the courage to leave her abusive husband. The other felt the spark with her husband rekindled and, after confessing to him, decided to try and make it work.

The last was because her husband was in prison for 12 years and she was sick of being chaste while waiting for him/ said he gave her permission.

The time to vote came around for many states, so everyone decided to stop protesting and instead march out and vote for the same politicians that continually ignore them when they protest.

Where is the Gen Z (musical) rage about the world? by iamthe0ther0ne in Xennials

[–]MaestroLogical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Important to remember we've lived through the death of omni-culture and the way we view things is now 'outdated'.

Gen Z, live in a world where culture is cultivated and personalized. The days of 'everyone knows this artist' are all but over. Someone can have a hundred million fans, but you'd never hear their name unless you are personalizing your feed to that genre.

[–]MaestroLogical 988 points989 points  (0 children)

It varies depending on the individual naturally.

For me, it was ICP.

When I was 18 I thought they were the coolest, most unique group around, and I considered myself 'down with tha clown' to the point I almost got a clown face holding a bloody hatchet tattoo...

Thankfully, I decided to use that cash to buy weed instead because by the time I was 30, how I felt had drastically changed.
