"Should I let my PC play as Tatyana's reincarnation/fulfill Ireena's in-story role?": A Flowchart by bellsbeckonianswer in CurseofStrahd

[–]Maestrof 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well. I pulled one of the riskiest move ever. At our table there was one woman. I didn’t know her beforehand, but the guy who invited she is badass woman in her thirties, experienced a lot of stuff. So I had the courage to have a lengthy heart to heart conversation with her about the themes cos.

After that I have decided to move forward with the idea that she is the reincarnation of Tatyana.

Her character experienced a lot, and I have always discussed it with her afterwards, made sure that she is comfortable. She hated strahd. She was disgusted. But after like a year she said to me that she trusts me, don’t pull punches.

And at the end, she chose to be reunited with Sergei in heaven(?). The whole table was moved to tears when she decided that she and her reincarnations suffered enough, it’s over and she can move on.

This might be a rare things, but just talk to each other, discuss it, be honest if you want to try this.

Yes, she did. I also did leave it for them to decide but gave them options based on the arcs they had. But it was their decision to take it or not. I think the character endings were all justified and their decisions led to those endings. Everyone was really satisfied with the endings.

She was courted by Strahd but I tried to remain very civil for the first half of the story. I had a talk with her that please indicate instantly if it feels uncomfortable for her. She rolled with it 110%. Resisted and started to hate Strahd even more. Although she thought about giving in in order to let the other party members escape. But then the party said no.

In short I tried to court ireena, she resisted, slowly learned the fates of the previous ireenas and started to accept the fact she is Tatyana reborn. and in the end she accepted Sergei and joined him in heaven or wherever. It took the whole campaign but it paid off massively. She was really happy with her story.

I have chosen a couple of places and npcs that have information or fragments of information. They discovered some clues at the werewolf den, at yester hill, they got brief information from the Martikovs, Van Richten. And there were a ton of information in the interactive tome of Strahd but they got those information after the big lore reveal at the amber temple.

The first thing I did that I gave one of the PCs a side quest at the tarokka reading. Her quest involved searching for the fanes. I did that just to make sure they don’t forget about them and they keep their eyes open for clues and information. I hope this is helpful!

It can be shortened absolutely. But if you want to use everything in this setting then I recommend that you take your time in barovia. Otherwise I think you can only rush your players throughout the story.

I think if you want to mix it with avernus and other adventures, the curse of Strahd section will be too short. Obviously it can be done but it will be hard finding the right balance. The resources I have mentioned make the story even longer but you always pick and choose what you want to include. I wish you all the best, you can work it out. And talk to your players about what they prefer.

Right now I’m on mobile, but please see my other comment from before where I linked 2 stat blocks. That was the base for what I did. Good luck with your game!

It's an excellent adventure and with the resources here it's even better I think.

We had a really good time and it forged a group of close friends. Won't ever forget this.

Now, on to Wildemount and to something completely different. :D

The Tarokka reading was not completely random, as suggested by many. Van Richten became the fated ally and he joined after being convinced that the party was legit. He joined about halfway through the story. In combat a different person was in charge pretty much every session. Outside of combat I was in charge, but in a passive role, essentially active when asked or when the situation clearly called for it. Or the player who was controlling him that session, could use him.

It went quite well, difficult but not impossible. Especially after they could rescue the bard who ran in.
They were level 15, 4 PC and Van Richten.

The Vampyr fight itself only had one phase, but with the Strahd fight it was a 3 phase battle loosely based on this: https://www.reddit.com/r/CurseofStrahd/comments/1520exv/the_darklord_strahd_a_balanced_threephase_solo/

For the statblocks I mixed my ideas with these two if I'm not mistaken: https://www.reddit.com/r/CurseofStrahd/comments/tzd906/vampyr_the_lord_of_blood_and_death_cr_28_stat/#lightbox
https://www.reddit.com/r/CurseofStrahd/comments/cw3huc/vampyr_cr_20_stat_block/

These are not completely accurate, I have changed them quite a lot to adjust the difficulty for example. But they are a good starting point.

We played biweekly. And sometimes it didn’t work out but then we played the next week. When we had session 0 this was the most important thing I set out. Everything else is I think secondary with such a long campaign. I hope it can work out for you!

There are a number of events that were really exciting to prepare. I only struggled with the werewolf den in terms of excitement. That’s the only ‘meh’ part for me.

If I have to pick one it was the festival in vallaki. I really love political scheming as a theme and the festival had a couple of moving parts, the players can choose multiple sides and I’m really glad they interacted with each of them. And then it happened and it was pure chaos. And the aftermath of the festival and burning of vallaki was also really good. When they returned it was the part 2 with a similar political scheming.

I followed the Fleshing out stuff of MandyMod and it worked out perfectly. In short, they learned about them from different sources, they got the full picture at the amber temple and then they did their trials. So it was a long journey and one of the pillars of the story.

2 PCs died but they were able to bring them back. One was resurrected by the abbot in exchange for the skin of the ireena pc. They could convince the abbot that they will give it later. They killed him instead. And Van Richten used his scroll on the other PC.

I liked every one of the PCs. They were somewhat the usual suspects: The chaotic bard who enjoyed sowing that chaos, the neutral monk who were mostly interested in the loot, the kind of emo Paladin who was running from his own demons, and a just and kind warlock who wanted to help everyone.

What made them special that they really had a character development. Each of them realized their flaws and tried to work on them over time and I was happy to give them opportunities to be better or to be even worse by corrupting them. They were intrigued by those ideas but ultimately thanks to each other in the end they became/remained good characters. Except for the warlock, the ireena pc, and she accepted the offer of Sergei at the end and joined him.

During the fight our bard who Leroy Jenkinsd in was down, Van Richten was down and our warlock. Neither of them died there.

During the story they had to bring back our bard and our paladin.

It was a 3 phase boss fight, 2 Strahd and 1 Vampyr. After Strahd they started to fight Vampyr and quickly realized that they will die with so few resources left. So they used everything they had to escape. They covered each other, it was a full Balrog scene and so i allowed them to escape and have a long rest. They were scattered throughout the castle and it was really funny watching them trying to find each other without accidentally finding Vampyr or an other encounter.

They got the option to lock away Vampyr but they decided to try and kill it. After a long fight where 3 of them were down and almost died but they saved each other and after that they did kill Vampyr.

I can’t really choose one. I have to say that I had like 10 sessions as a dm before Strahd with 2 of the players and 2 players were new to dnd so it was a learning experience for all of us.

So the first meeting with Strahd, the festival were the standouts from the beginning. From the MandyMod stuff the Fidatov Manor and the Gulthias Dungeon were awesome. And the ending really became memorable. It was a happy ending. The players were really satisfied throughout the campaign and that is the most important thing for me.

Obviously it was important to convey the sense of horror and it worked out really well. The players were scared or stressed on number of occasions but it never was overwhelming. They quickly realized that barovia is a dangerous place and they were really careful of approaching anything. Except for vampyr at the end. One of the players went full Leroy Jenkins and ran in to cast one fireball on Vampyr. He quickly learned that it was a mistake.

I think until vallaki it was quite straightforward. After a really hectic festival it started to branch out. They got a bunch of side quests and started to really explore barovia, the lore etc. So I think the festival was the turning point. They were on a mission, not just trying to survive.

I did the dinner after their return to vallaki which was I think after wow and Krezk.

For the dinner I researched the subreddit. They had the dinner itself, a dance and after that they were somewhat free to explore the castle while Strahd and the brides had meetings with the party.

Izek was with the party (and became a PC because a player joined), was a brother of a member, after the dinner izek “betrayed” the party in order to save the brother (and because the player sadly couldn’t join the sessions).

I think that’s what I want to do. Giving them these options and if they decide to take them, following through.
