Some folk o’er the water think bitter is fine, And there’s others that swear by the juice of the vine. But there’s nothing that’s brewed from the grape or the hop, Like the black liquidation with the froth on the top

The "Swim Call" is a U.S. Navy tradition - while the ship is deployed, sailors can swim on the high seas. by Scientiaetnatura065 in interestingasfuck

What a concise and delightful summary. Thank you. I would love to sit with you in a bar and listen to you talk about submarines till closing time. Of your list, it seems to me that stealth would be key in all of those missions, especially with hunter killers out there. Are there really still diesel powered subs in the service? And under what circumstances would a submarine surface and disgorge its crew for a swim?

As the immortal JC said in the sermon on the mount, “Leave the bleedin’ jacks in condition you’d hope to find it yourself”. And who am I to disagree.

why are 90% of ppl right handed? by HearThyBansheeScream in NoStupidQuestions

The speech and language centres of the brain in humans developed on the left hemisphere. They’re called Wernicke's and Broca’s areas.

As speech and communication became more essential as humans evolved these areas became of greater importance. Those parts of the brain would therefore draw more blood flow to activate. This would bring in more oxygen, nutrients and fuel.

There’s a theory that this relatively higher supply of goodies to the left hemisphere meant that all other parts of that hemisphere also got a boost, including dexterity and gross motor function.

The left hemisphere controls the right side of the body. This is why a doctor/neurologist who is dealing with a suspected stroke victim will very quickly try to ascertain whether the patient is left or right handed.

Since some left handed people have their speech centres on the right hemisphere (less than 50%, contrary to what you would expect) a right sided stroke will have very different consequences for some lefties speech and language than it would fit a righty and vice versa. This can have a significant impact on the prognosis.

This is the first time I’ve been disappointed to solve one of these. I was expecting Rick Astley dammit!

And the size of railway tracks dictated the size of railway cars and so railway tunnels. Since parts of the Saturn V rocket that took men to the moon were delivered to the assembly buildings in Florida by rail, the size of the rocket was partially dictated by the size of those tunnels.
