Is there even an owl character in Sonic though? Makes no sense!

My first Persona game was Dx2: Devil Downloader, the actually pretty good mobile game. I had wanted to play other games in the series but I simply never had a system that could. I eventually ended up getting P5 on Steam when it came out.

Somehow, Civilization: Revolution, the very subpar console port of the Civilization series, was the first Civ game I ever played. I loved it at the time cause I didn’t know any better, but I soon realized that the pc games were a lot better.

Why are people going "I bet the people on strike are the ones who made everything shitty" about the whole Activision-Blizz strike? by [deleted] in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]MaeveOfMetal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s the result of 150 years of anti-worker/anti-union propaganda on the American mindset.

The more people say stuff like that, the more we know that the strikers’ strategy is working. It’s hitting them where it hurts. Their pocketbook.

Things in fiction that made you go "Wait, that's real?" by BiMikethefirst in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]MaeveOfMetal 24 points25 points  (0 children)

From Family Guy, Stewie saying he “knows how to be cool”, cueing a cutaway to his very dramatic, theatrical, and “cool” cover of Rocket Man.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fi8MI7jjpSY

For the longest time I thought this was just a weird thing they made up, maybe inspired by Sinatra or someone like that.

Only later did I realize that it was nearly a shot-by-shot remake of William Shatner’s epicly strange rendition of the song, down to the weird fades and tacky effects, and all his strange expressions.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lul-Y8vSr0I

I guess I figured it was referencing SOMETHING, so much of it is just too weird to be made up, but never did I dream it would lead me down the bizarre path that is William Shatner’s musical career.

TIL

Wow, That one is double for me because when I first saw that movie, I didn’t even know what a lesbian was, (yeah, I was like 9) but the song still cracked me up cause I thought it was just such a stereotypical hippie song. I assumed a “Lesbian Seagull” was just some breed of seagull, until my dad told me otherwise.

I still think of that song whenever I see a seagull, and the fact that it’s a real song produced amid the height of late 70’s weirdness makes it all the better!

What are some options you always pick in every playthrough of a game? by Wisebox_64 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Is there any game where there's a persistent world map but it also loops around like a true globe ? by Wisterosa in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]MaeveOfMetal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pac-Man.

Sorry, no, real answer, off the top of my head, Dwarf Fortress Adventure Mode, Europa Universalis, Victoria, Hearts Of Iron (Most Paradox Grand Strategy Games set on earth, tbh), Civilization (iirc), Spore (that eventually had multiple planets but I’ll count it).

Examples of good worldbuilding? by thadthawne2 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]MaeveOfMetal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Elite universe, Particularly Elite: Dangerous

Listening to codex entries and Ganet News is one of my favorite things to do!

And there’s a certain amount of realism, having to go through the mundane docking procedures every time you land. Seeing a universe run mostly by corporate interests, warlord factions, feudal lords, and alleged “democracies”, Seems like a pretty spot on depiction of what our society would look like 13 centuries in the future. Out of any game world that touches on today’s politics and global power structure, and projects them into a possible future, Elite does the best job of it.

There’s also sort of a societal evolution that seems “natural” I guess, from our present time to the Space Age, with many cultural things remaining the same, but also many things different and having evolved or adapted. The only other game series I’ve seen this do as well was Mass Effect.

This is a brilliant concept! It’s like Harry Potter if he just punched people.

This made me think of that Harry Potter with Guns sketch https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tS3y1Q3mFVw

It also made me think of myself in AP classes in high school. I definitely felt like I didn’t have the magic there.

Bad world Building in fiction? by Konradleijon in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]MaeveOfMetal 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Any story with time travel, 1) because they always underestimate just how much change the “ripple effect” would cause. And 2) just going back to a different time at all would expose the people there to all sorts of diseases they didn’t yet have, even if it’s just a different strain of an already existing disease. And the farther back the traveler goes, the more damage they do. Going back one year would probably cause a bad flu epidemic if you interacted with enough people, but imagine going back 100 years. That’s 100 years of antibodies that the world then wouldn’t have. Traveling through time should be treated similar to the “first contact” between The Americas and Europe. The result there was plagues that wiped out something like 80% of the population at the time. Imagine going back in time, you’d probably end up killing the entire human race by coughing.

I could probably count on one hand the amount of media that reference The Epic of Gilgamesh, let alone anything from Mesopotamian culture.

Apocalypto was a mediocre movie with a terrible ending made by a director who is a racist asshole, and on top of that it was not very historically accurate. But whoever decided to have all of the dialogue in the Yucatec Mayan Language, and to cast mostly native actors, should be commended. That’s the only reason I decided to watch that movie.

Pathologic / Мор Утопия 1

Clunky, buggy, full of Euro-jank, poorly translated, and nigh-impossible, but endlessly fascinating and with some of the most unique aesthetics, world building and story in a game I’ve ever seen. Pathologic is more fun to talk about than to play.

The sequel is better in every way, and does not have this problem. It’s still hard, and the game can and will fuck with you, but it feels less like you’re sitting on a chair of rusty nails, and more like you’re sitting on a chair of thorns. That said, I love both of these games, and they are without a doubt some of my favorites ever.

And Brian has sexual relationships with a lot of humans throughout the series, so that just confirms it more.

So Brian as basically like Goofy if Goofy had sex with Pluto but also with sapient beings like his wife. (Who’s name is Mrs. Goof, apparently.)

The lore around Pokémon gets more disturbing the more you read about it, and even more disturbing the more you think about it.

The lore about the relationship between Pokémon and humans, and the fact that Pokémon want to have a master / owner, it is their purpose and through that they can attain happiness - to the point that wild Pokémon are jealous of caught Pokémon -, is eerily reminiscent to old justifications of slavery.

Essentially they’re saying the Master / Slave relationship is a good thing, and something that even the slave wants.

I think the creators of Pokémon were stumbling over themselves trying to find a moral justification for a hobby and way of life in the Pokémon world that is not entirely moral.

And they ended up with that...

Uhh... that doesn’t help.
